The part where u mentioned being leched at/shoved in Old city made me wonder.....the instances of such incidents are high in any crowded place. At any point of time the Old City is usually full of ppl (read men). The Old City happens to be a Muslim dominated area so maybe u equating eve-teasing with religion stems from bad experiences there.

one of my experience....this once a friend n me were goin to lifestyle...from amrutha mall...n these 2 freaks kept on followin us and sayin ....please yaar...come to lunch with us....dont say no yaar...n crap....we lost em for a while....then my frd left..n one of those guys came again n said....Hi im Raj...Mujhse dosti karoge babe(guy had a bad hindi n eng accent....i felt like stabbing him)...but as i have learnt....IGNORING SUCH JERKS IS THE BEST WAY

I feel eve teasing is a result of various reasons one being a repressive society where women have no voice and nothing resembling equal rights. Influence of western media and culture is one of the primary cause. Eve teasing has shown no signs of abating even as the country shows development. The root cause of the problem is the socio-economic background of the individual indulging in such activities which has to be considered before seeking a lasting and effective solution. Laws in effect for eve teasing dont make much impact, punishment alone cannot solve the crime



Increase in educational levels only make women more aware of their own identity but there is no change in the patriarchal and conservative structure of family and society. Internet and television expose the new generations to a Western, liberal, explosive lifestyle, but on the other hand they live in a society which refuses to shift from the orthodox, male chauvinistic mode.



I feel eve teasing does not relate to religion. We were eve teased in delhi majority of them who indulged in such activities were people from north because they formed the majority of the population. Eve teasing has nothing to do with being a muslim,hindu or a christian, it depends on so many factors(peer pressure,socio economic more exposure to western media and culture, rigid male chauvinistic ideology, etc) so instead of stating a muslim guy teases girls more than a hindu guy lets try and bring about a change in society in general, as i had pointed out earlier it has nothing to do with the place, or the religion it has more to do with the people and their attitudes because people form places and religions.

I can also give a hundred example in which men (of all religion) took up a lot of pain to avoid putting females in an uncomfortable situation (even tho they would not have minded so much). So it works both ways.

You are right.



Hyd main thodi zyaada harrasment hota hai. Teasing is an irritant (at worst), but harrasment is not. Which is why I talk about nawaabi-ness.

I do not think anyone has been able to poke a decent hole in my theory yet. (Please refer to some longer earlier posts by me). All people are saying is that "No, its not based on religion" or "Let's think of a solution instead" . I'm all for a solution but my original interest was in whtehr it si linked to religion. So I'm still sticking by that.



So this is my thought process:

1. The north in general has more eveteasing than the south (this is statistically true by police records although a lot of this goes unreported). 2. In the south, Hyderabad has more eveteasing than other cities (my and my friends' anecdotal evidence)

3. I think eveteasing is more in Hyd because Hyd is more like the north than other southern cities. It has a more hetereogeneous population. The Mughal invasion was from the North as we all know, so cultural attributes between the North and Hyd are similar in many ways.

4. Given that is true, most eveteasers up north may well be Hindu. But in Hyderabad, it is the Muslims who evetease more, because culturally Hyderabadi Muslims share more attributes with Northerners(both Hindu and Muslim northerners) than non-muslims in Hyd share with Northerners i.e. attributes like highly patriarchal families, lesser education on average for women, lower female labor force participation on average

5. In summary, I'm saying that Muslims in Hyd share a lot of cultural and socio-economic attributes with people of any religion in the North. So if you have a lot of eveteasing up North, and if you have similar people in Hyd, they you will have a lot of eveteasing in Hyd.



I'm still waiting for an intelligent rebuttal which bears in mind these 5 points instead of blatantly claiming that my words are not true, or just telling me lets focus on a solution. I'm interested in the problem for now, not the solution ,altough I believe solution is very needed.
