Hi there! This is perhaps a really controversial topic to raise, because I'm not talking about just eve-teasing, I'm talking about which men are more likely to be eve-teasers. In my 6 years of experience being eve-teased in Hyd, I have found that more than Telugu guys, it is the Muslim guys who tease girls more. I am not saying that this is a story of causation - I am saying this is a story of correlation i.e. I am not saying that Islam causes men to be eve-teasers, I'm saying that it is more likely that you are eveteased by a Muslim guy. Of course, this is not a sweeping generalisation, most Muslims are perfectly decent people, and a lot of Telugu/Hindu guys are the worst wretches.



In my experience, when I went up North girls were getting eveteased pretty badly up there. In Madras, it was not too bad, there was some but it was nowhere near as bad as Hyd. So what I'm saying is that a lot has to do with levels of education, income and parental education. Those three indicators are usually lower in cities up North and that's why there's more eveteasing. And so if you controlled for all those factors in a regression, we might well find that being Hindu or Muslim has nothing to do with eveteasing.



Also, there are certain cultural factors inherent in some cities/societies/families, where women are more objectified, and since eve-teasing is an assertion of masculine power, it is more likely to happen in patriarchal settings, i.e. the North, Muslim societies .Often by eveteasing, men are just sending a message, that a woman should remain in her proper place i.e. inside of the home, metaphorically.



I am particularly interested in hearing from other women, and whether or not they concur with this opinion based on anecdotal evidence.

Eve teasers need to punished irrespective of which cast/religion they belong to.....so theres no point divinding them in hindus or muslims.

I agree that eveteasing is a very depraved act and it should be punished. No doubt it is the solution that is more important. But the point of that particular post was just to see if cultural stereotypes have a kernel of truth behind them.

I do not feel that the Christian angle is relevant. Islam itself is not a religion that oppresses or degrades women. It is in fact a religion that elevates women to high status. It is the protection of that status that has evolved over the years into what some view as repression of their women sometimes. Many scholars have unwritten these patriarachal interpretations of the Quran.

an incident from work yes:



My colleague, a girl of 22, was followed by 2 guys on a bike who pestered her to give 'em her number even after she told them to get lost.. right from Punjagutta to Madhapur. They threw a chit with the name Sameer n a number n asked her to call them. She came n narrated the incident to ur truly n our bunch. I called up the guy, gave him an earful, extracted despo apologies, n bid him farewell.



lesson: Laatau ke bhoot batau se nahee maante i.e. Eve-teasers need to get their asses kicked to make them understand. Next time, it happens to any girl who's reading this, abuse, yell, slap, throw ur sandal at them..

I agree with the treatment that needs to be meted out to these people. The men who do this shit are cowards. They have no courage. The real men can get with girls anytime. So when you yell and scream abuses at a coward they want to bail from the situation asap. You'll see them fleeing instantly. But I think these stories detract from the point of the discussion which was to see if in Hyderabad, Muslim guys do this more than others. For example when I go to Old City, I cant walk two feet without being leched at, touched, lectured and reprimanded (about my clothes). In other parts of the city, I can go for about 15 feet before something happens.

I'm still waiting for female opinions on this issue. I understand eveteasing and religion are a sensitive topic, but that's the fun of a discussion board. It's completely anonymous.
