i dont know if u have heard or not, but in 2001, there were this massive bush fires in Sydney., and at that time i was living like may be 3 kms away from the fire line in the mountains. that was really scary with the fires just across the small river and we living on this side... i was living with this old couple and hey were so relaxed about the whole thing saying that the fires wilol never cross the river. well... we survived.

i was there during the 2002 bush fires...it was scary seeing the smoke in the horizon from my office windows daily. we even saw the fires real close when we went driving to Berowra (spell?) Waters and Entrance Beach via the freeway....scary but exciting! luckily it was towards the end of bush fire season and the fires were not very close to the road.

blue mountains were terrible that year...i could not go there until feb when the flames had fully died out. most of the range was full of black tree stumps :( but u know what...there were lotsa new leaves growing outta those stumps! Mother Nature at work! and i heard they were green again in a couple of months.

the pelicans occupied almost every square feet of the sand bars....and there was a pelican feeding show too (tho we were prohibited from feeding them, we fed popcorns to a few on the sly  ). a beautiful place!

actually, the bush fires are a way of propogating the trees endemic to the blue mountains. the fire helps the hard shell of the seed to open and there by germinate. and thats how the species are kept alive.

and about the pelicans in entrance.... there were a few nasty stories..... actually, with birds, they cant burp or fart, and what a few naughty kids do is fee these birds antacid and fizz producing tablets with popcorn and once it reaches the stomach of these birds, the stomach bloats and some times bursts throwing the viscera all around the place killing the bird.
