Speaking of seafood, has anyone tried mussels or fresh raw oysters? I was at this party where it was served, and my friend forbade me from eating it cause she saw half the guys get majorly horny after downing only 6-7!! It was hilarious.....................but then, arent guys horny 89% of the time anyway?

mussels are really tasty
back home i lived a few minutes walk away from a really great mussel beach, used to go down occasionally to collect a bucket. i'd sometimes find oysters, i've tried them a couple of times, they taste metallic and slimy, i'd try them again though as it's supposed to be an aquired taste.

try cooking the oyesters in thyme or rosemary with a lil bit of red wine vinegar. they just taste awesome

How on earth do you eat sushi in an obviously non-halal restaurant? I thought you were a Muslim (if you are Alexis' sister).

Anyway, I had sushi only once.. and that was when a Japanese friend made it. It was kind of yucky though. The so called Chinese and Japanese restaurants in Hyderabad would be too Indianised, to suit the Indian taste buds. Those are not authentic of any kind.

Ten years ago, my brother and I were walking on the road (in Habshiguda) and in the distance, we saw a new "chinese fast food stall" that read "LING" -something "CHINESE FAST FOOD". Curious, we walked towards it, and then read the full name - "LINGAREDDY CHINESE FAST FOOD" :P

i dont think halal applies to sea food (fish, prawns, crabs etc). where do u find a neck to slit in those creatures...?

 u'll find a lot of such "CHAINEES" bandis all over hyderabad.

last year a small chinese restaurant opened in Karkhana (sec'bad) with the usual dragon motifs, paper lanterns and a fancy chinese sounding name. but behind the cash counter, the owner was a typical coastal Andhraite and had lots of pictures of Hindu Gods behind him....

the food was greasy n tasted horrible. anyways the place shut down in a few months...

CAD is right lonewolf, sea creatures are not required to be halal. Also, I am Muslim and Alexis' younger sister :)

My Muslim roommates eat only halal food in the Indian restaurant.. for the last 3 years they've never cooked at home. When I cook chicken bought at Dominicks, they don't eat it, saying it is not halal. My Muslim colleagues at work don't eat it too because it is not halal (I work in a predominantly Muslim company). I wish they were more like some of my Bangladeshi classmates who eat non-halal meat, and pork regularly (except during Ramzan).

Halal meat typically means the animal is killed by a Muslim, and its throat is slit, allowing the blood to flow out. One of these days I'll buy halal meat and cook my fav chicken curry so that my roomies can eat something other than the restaurant biryani :D

Kosher is the halal equivalent for Jews. I don't know any Jews personally, so I never asked them whats the story behind kosher.

i also heard that a prayer is whispered into the animal's ear before slitting the throat....

yes it is. they also require the blood to be let out from the throat.

a funny thing here is muslims dont eat kosher meat and jews dont eat halal meat, tho both are technically the same. i think it depends on what prayer u say while slitting the animal's throat :)

Is the animal alive or dead through out the bleeding process?

I think it is alive coz dead bodies do not bleed for long. But I would like to know if anyone had better information.

What on Gods green earth does junk food have to do with halaal food?? Yes, mashallah we all follow the halaal system.

Haraam meat is pork, and any other meat who wasnt slaughtered under the muslim rules. Junk food isnt slaughtered, it is made with empty calories like chips, candy bars and crappy stuff like that.
