Indians are the biggest racists

by Igiveadamn » Sun Nov 14, 2004 6:51 pm

After meeting different people and observing the way of things in life I have realised that we are very racist. Is it because of the social fabric or is it because it's just us? Are tolerance and love things that we are born without? Do we always look for a certain something in the other person every other time? How many of you would date/marry a black person? And how many of you would be willing to do anything to suck up to a white person? This trend is more prevalent among people from small towns and villages. What can we do to change it? How many of you are racist? Please be honest because it's just a discussion board.

I have realised that despite trying hard to be a good person, I am a racist. I can't get myself to go out with a black girl for example.
If I am the future, we are history.

I think you are mistaking preference with racism.

Racism is much bigger... I beleive you dont have a preference for Black girls. Maybe you havent seen the right kind. You know, the Naomi Camplbells, Halle Berry's(oh la la.. )... :D

Also you ought to look beyond the color of the skin.. black folk are very nice people once you get to know them. I have dated a few black girls and white too. I can tell you the white women dont have the sense of humor of a black women. They are class. Specially since they try so hard to come up in life.

A black women will kill for her man.. and so will and Indian women.

i dont think i am a racist in the indian sense...ie i dont believe in caste or religious differences.

abt dating a black (ie african) girls...i dont really know. i used have a few good african friends (all students in hyderabad). i used to flirt and be pally with those girls but never 'dated' them in the conventional sense (took one or two of them out to restaurants but thats no 'dating'). that situation never came up so i dont know...

Well that's exactly what I told. We are racists on a much bigger scale, dating/marrying black women is just an example that I gave. Let me give u another example. Indians who are in white dominated countries are always complaining about racism, but when it comes down to them they exercise it readily. What is worse is tht it makes us hypocrites too.

Yes.. but isnt that chaging now..

I can give you examples from our life time where people have gone beyond the norms of the existing system to change things. Maybe you need to look more. I beleive it is changing now. :D

It's changing but only in the cosmopoliton cities. Maybe you should look around a little more. Majority of the people would still give their lives up for stupid reasons.

True in a way.. but doesnt it always start in the city and go down to the little places. I am sure, the media is doing its bit. Its only a matter of time.

Yes, the media should come out do it's part. What I have observed is that peopl who come from outside and settle in cities take a longer time to change, like for example two-three generations. As long as they have their original roots in their towns/villages they are going to be bound to silly customs and beliefs. Well, atleast most of them.

You can't be more right on this. And Indians keep calling everyone "racist" at the drop of a hat. One of my former desi roomies had a Walmart employee lose her job because she she did not smile at him when he went to pay his electricity bill. All he had to do was tell her manager the next day of his "racist" experience, and the poor girl lost her job. If we extended the racism law to include Indians (and Afro-Americans as well), half the country would be either jobless or sitting in jail.

I think the statement that Indians are racists is true. But the statement that Indians are the biggest racists is downright silly. They are not anymore racist than the snooty Britishers or the impossibly hypocritic Americans. No matter what is said and done, Indians can only, perhaps, match the revolting levels of racism practiced by these guys. They can never surpass it. Therefore, the statement that the Indians are the biggest racists can only be true, if other nations practicing racism are also the biggest racists, if not more.

Moreover, Indians have come from a background of constant slavery right from the beginning of their history. Most of the rulers that have ruled India were of foreign origin. They practiced racism severely. Including the British. So Indians, along with the Africans, have a deep understanding of the curse known as racism. As a consequence, they are more likely to shy away from it, rather than practice it.

As I said, Indians are racist, but not nearly as much as the other nations.

Indians are very racist mainly because of the prevailing caste system in India (which is still on in high swing). Don't you find Indians (mostly in villages) making fun of others and even getting into fights because they are of different castes (and subcastes)? Making comments on basis of caste and subcaste is also a form of racism, and Indians are experts in that.

finally a little bit of introspection....

by Reality,,its here. Accept it. » Mon Nov 15, 2004 12:28 am

Thats what i love about the users on these boards. Everyone here knows about his true self and isnt afraid to say so. It takes a lot of courage to say "I know i am Bad" when you know you are bad. way to go people.

Now about the racism issue, I agree that the indians are very racist by nature. and a racist is a person who differenciates and discriminates on the basis of race. so in that sence we are more 'racist' than the whites because we discriminate againest the people of our own race. And given a chance we would show the same or even more level of discrimination againest people of a different race notably africans.

And this kind of discrimination is ingrained in our subconscious. and i sometimes wonder if its something genetic. coz i dont believe in the reasoning that we do it because we were ruled by the white man once. Most of the indians alive today were never even born under the british raj. so i dont know why we have this inherent 'liking' for the colour white. does anyone have any answers?

An excellent subject Igiveadamn! I have thought about this in the past and totally agree with you.

I do wonder if I would date/marry a black tho... somehow whilst growing up you pick up likes/dislikes from all around you and I think Indians still think blacks are below them. But I have never have had black friends so I can't be sure. I certainly don't have anything against them. I guess only way to find out if I am a rascist is to date a black. I am sure my partner would understand

Oh did I say I am married to a white. Colour did not cross the min, it was the person that mattered.

IGAD (may I call you that, can't type your whole name all the time you know :P)

Once again, great thread (that actually makes sense and have intelligent conversation flow)! You seem to be on a roll here! Great job.

I agree with most of the comments written here, and I only have to add that: the world is full of them. I don't believe that by far, INDIANS are the BIGGEST RACISTS.

I think there is racism in everyone of us (yes, that is a rather pessimistic viewpoint) I mean that everyone has had an experience that made them change their opinions about certain things and some people are more influenced by outside sources than personal experiences. And actions speak louder than words, because you didn’t think that you were racist when you did something, others might have different perceptions about the matter.

Am I racist? I certainly hope I have not come across like that in the past. Speaking of blacks, they are cool, have a couple of great black classmates and friends.

Would I date a black? No and I wouldn’t date a white either. And I am being practical here. Of course, if an opportunity presented itself, I would perhaps hesitate at first but I have more or less an ideal in what or whom I am looking for. I don’t think there will be a dearth of desi guys anytime soon.

It's not only about blacks. I just gave an example. Racism is of many forms. It starts right at home... caste/religion/regional etc. We don't have any qualms about making fun of chinese/japanese/african guys. We are always joking about blacks and hispanics. But we don't like being at the receiving end. the thing is, if you hate racism, then don't practise it yourself. And if you do practise it directly or indirectly, don't crib about it. But it's not about all the Indians, some of them are good. Most Indians are racist though, and Jaan, yes you can call me IGAD.

I want to rephrase my statement. Maybe we are not big time racists but we certainly discriminate a lot. Discrimination is every where. Regional, linguistic, religious and caste discrimination are some examples that we are all guilty of. "Look at that sambar girl she's so funny"/"Saala gulti ko bahut akad hain"/"woh babu moshai ko dekh kaise baat karra hain" etc etc etc. I think this has got a lot to do with the way people are brought up. At the macroscopic level we are all friendly and warm, but at the microscopic level it's very unfortunate that we are like the whites. But all said and done, we are a great country and have stood together over the centuries despite so many differences. And that my friends, I feel, can only happen in India. So congratulations to all of us, but we still have to long distance to travel.
If I am the future, we are history.

Comming to this, donno about racism. But yeas we are the biggest snobs around.

How many of you go about saying Namaste, Salaam or even Hi. Of all the Indians I have met abroad, they are a major turn off. Never smile, speak to others in the same snobbish tone.

Freindliness in society is something that needs to be copied from the west (don't turn this into a politicla topic and bring about bush and his plethora on the globe). A normal westerner is always a pleasure to be with compared to an Indian or someone from the subcontinent :-P

Nah, not all. I think the English culture has been fused with the Indians and therefore they are more tolerant of Indians in general. Jackal?
