Its Ravindranath Tagore who entitled Gandhiji as Mahatma.

it was first ghosh, before tagore, but tagore was the first to address Gandhi as mahatma

Early 30's u say.....I found some info saying that it was first used in a poem by some William Dunbar in the year 1508.....
William Dunbar is considered one of Scotland's greatest literary figures, and has the dubious distinction of having been responsible for the first printed use of the word "_" (1508)
