But again i have an observation to make, i have a lot of friends from sainik school, the place where there are only guys in a residential setup for 6 yrs of their schooling life. i noticed that they have a healthy respect towards girls and dont tease or abuse them. and i know people from very progressive co-ed schools who have the worst attidute towards girls.
so i have my reservations as to if this is the real problem.
one more very valid observation is ,about guys who have sisters indulging in these kind of activites...and surprisingly u will find a lot of them do have sisters. so........

Which is exactly why I began to wonder if its only in the education or the education system that the fault lies.

well 'arti', i want to know the difference btw education and education system? i comprehend it in a way where u mean to say -is it just teaching morals in school (education) or the system of schooling as in coed etc.(education system). let me know if i am thinking on the same plane as u are or not.

Skimmed through the 6th and 7th page......here are my 2 cents.

Growing up in a co-ed environment need not necessarily translate into 'healthy respect for the opposite gender'.

2 sides to it. I grew up in an all-girl environment (thats 17 yrs of my life!) I've seen some girls who go overboard when in mixed company. They only end up cheapening themselves. On the other hand, there are others who are tongue-tied when they come face to face with the opposite gender. It actually all boils down to how u've been brought up. Ever since I began work I've been fortunate to have interacted with some brilliant guys/male colleagues. Of course there have been rotten apples as well. But whats really imp is how u look at it.

As far as the spitting is concerned it DEFINITELY HAPPENS. Its absolutely disgusting. Was on my 2 wheeler, behind a bus and saw someone spit right across. Was glad had not been overtaking the bus coz it wud have been a lousy start to my day.

Eve-teasing? Man! Its as old as the mountains.

To the girls, Just ignore the bas***** I don't like profanity being used on a DB but thats the only word I have for them.

I dont think ignoring them would serve the purpose. It can be stopped to a certain extent by encouraging women to retailiate in a fearless fashion and this would be possible only when she gets the unconditional support from the community.

Many say eve teasing is done for "fun" others are of the opinion that women "enjoy the attention" and the eve teasers enjoy watching their "reactions". As pointed out in the earlier posts everyone wants to be noticed but not teased there is a major difference. We live a life to be noticed for so many reasons be it anything, otherwise the whole purpose of life is defeated.

The patriarchal mindset of the Indian male needs to change (does not apply to all the indian males). They thrive on the fact that even today a large number of women still prefer to ignore rather than to confront such situations.

Hence Ignoring wont help solve this menace, we need to somehow change the mindset of people towards such issues . I have started the process, have all of you too??????????

as far as eve teasers are concerned either ignore them or beat them up if there are no cops around.

when i was doing my graduation, a friend and i badly battered a chap who was giving my girl friend a bad time. he was hospitalised and never seen around her again. and from some kicks i placed i can definitely say that he'll be having difficulty fathering a child now.. ;)

well that almost became a police case but my friend was politically connected and hushed up the matter. my family still does not know abt that! :D

retaliation....how?

by Reality,,its here.Accept it. » Sun Nov 07, 2004 11:13 am

well CAD , all i can say is that you were lucky and so was your girlfriend.

It is about the ppl who dont have dashing boyfiends like you and politically connected friends like you do that we are concerned about.

Got any solutions for that ? I think if the victims started fighting back atleast in a small way there would be a perceptible difference.

So are you trying to say that if you see someone eve-teasing, you will just let the girl fight back and watch the scene?

As far as CAD being lucky goes, he made a stand and stood up for it. He knew what he was doing, so Luck had only a small part to play. And anyway, even if he didnt have politically connected friends, CAD (or anyone) would definitely stand up for her girlfriend or any other girl for that matter.

What's 'fighting back in a small way'? If u r in a group then things are different. The guy(s) can be thrashed. But eve-teasing happens (lots of times) when say the girl is waiting at a bus-stop or riding a bike or just walking down the road.

What do u do in a situation like that? If u were to try and give it back (by lambasting them verbally for instance) u r only encouraging them. That is the beginning of cheap thrills for them. We also know that a man is physically stronger than a woman so its really not possible to rain blows on them (unless u r in a group).

I dont mean to make women out to be an absolute helpless, wimpish lot. Its just that when u r alone and at the receiving end of such trash its best to ignore them and get the hell out of there.

PS Hope the collective souls of all eve-teasers rot in hell.

Not all guys would though. Some are plain wimps, or they just dont think eve-teasing is a big deal.

Must be the guys who do not have sisters/friends. Otherwise I dunno if anybody can do something as wimpy.

I have been beaten up quite a lot of times by eve-teasers when I stood up or my sisters/friends. I am a wimp, but a brave one. Have quite a few stories to tell...

fighting back...what does it mean?

by Reality,,its here.Accept it. » Sun Nov 07, 2004 12:24 pm

I guess i made a mistake while assuming that people would read my post in context to my previous posts.

"Fight back a little bit" what does it mean? If u would have had an idea if had remembered what i wrote b4.

Fight back doesnt mean having a physical confrontation. It can be in various ways and it doesnt apply to all situations.

Lets take the "arti" way of fighting back , she says she carries a pin or stamps over the perpetrators toes. thats a way , buts its only the guy and you who know what happened. so it doesnt stop him from repeating it with someone else.

what i mean by 'fighting back a little bit' is that you let people around u ( they might not be your friends) know what happened and as i mentioned b4 there will be a lot of people like CAD ( no disrespect in anyway ) around who would respond and give the guy a bashing he will remember.

well this way does not apply in all circumstances but the most cases of eve teasing do happen when people are around. and people dont respond bcoz the person getting teased just slently bears it.

The first step would be to raise ur voice againest whats happening to you, then the people will take ur lead. You cant expect others to fight ur case when dont even show the willingness to fight back. Thats what i meant by figthing back.

And as far as CAD being lucky , i still stick to it. coz he had been hauled to the police station for standing up to the right cause he would have given a second thought about the bashing. ( and again i am talking about human mentality and not saying anything to take away from CAD , i am sure he is a very upright person who stands up to his morals.) but Reality does strike you down more often than not.

Agree totally. Many times I also have had to stand and watch because I didnt know whether it was eve-teasing or just some friends having fun, or someone who have quarelled.

AFA i am concerned, I would have beaten him up, even in front of a cop. If the girl was someone I knew, then the beating would be severe, otherwise I would let him go 'cheaply'.

as far as my being lucky goes, yes, i was. i bashed up that guy in a moment of anger when the eve-teaser was turning too indecent. i wud have definitely been in trouble if the case had gone to the police- the police wud of corz take me to court and worse, my parents wud come to know abt the extra-curricular activities of their studious son...;)

but seriously, such violence is no answer if guys just pass some comments or ogle from a distance. but if the comments or their actions take a turn towards indecency, i am sure anyone wud lose control and be violent (and might regret it later). the police cant be everywhere to catch the culprits, not can the girls expect a known male to be nearby everytime.

i think the best solution wud be for the girls to ignore comments and stares but if it goes out of hand, use weapons like pins, etc Arti style.

Tell me bout it!! Its pretty disgusting. Been a while since I stopped commuting by autos ........ but I dont see why everyone is so curious to take a peek into an auto more so if they knew a lady was seated. Its almost as if they expect a gorgeous dame to flash a wonderful smile ...

Have travelled quite a bit on autos that sometimes even I almost end up peeping. Sheesh!!

wooooow ,, where are we headed??????

by Reality,,its here.Accept it. » Tue Nov 09, 2004 5:13 pm

hmmmmm this is quite interesting people.

where are we actually headed??

we started off with spitting on people and went over to eve-teasing and bad behaviour towards females and now towards looking at females !!!!!!!!!

Comon everybody , cut some slack. what are we expecting here, utopia? i agree that the first two issues are related but the third direction change is actually taking this discussion nowhere. now do we need to teach guys not to look at females? as far as i am concerned , there is no law or edit anyplace and in any culture that says 'dont look'. and once u are permitted to look , it becomes a very thin line that seperates looking, staring and oogling. And by the way , i am not even sure peeping can be called oogling , coz oogling as far as i know means looking at some object for a considerable length of time and peeping doesnt allow that much time.

So i guess people do need to have a more 'chalta hain' attitude atleast in some aspects. that definetly helps in not making every small inconvinience look disgusting.
