Indian Idol?

by Bimbette » Thu Nov 04, 2004 7:35 am

Hey all!

Was watching an episode of 'Indian Idol' (for the uninitiated, its an all India hunt for singing talent in the country) on TV. There was this one participant (a girl of about 17) who sang something that was unfortunately not in tune.

What got my goat was a certain Anu Malik's reaction, "Aap agar competition main akele hoti tab bhi aap last aati" and more stinging remarks. Stung by the unexpected criticism/barbs, the girl left with tears in her eyes.

The judges have had a lot of fun at the participants' expense all in the name of entertainment. If the participant enjoys the joke, then its ok. But making them feel like crap, by poking fun at their lack of singing abilities is definitely not on.

Anyone who concurs?

Indian Idol is just like American Idol then! In AI, Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul critique the singers who try out. Every one of them. Simon always has something rude and mean to say, no matter how well the singer sings. Randy says it like it is, and Paula is very sweet and she sort of balances out the damage done by the other 2.

I dont think making fun of them serves any purpose---other than entertainment. It would, infact, crush the spirit of the singer who becomes the butt of the jokes.

Theres something called constructive criticism, this definitely doesnt come under that.

If you posed that question to me: The host is Ryan Seacrest, and those 3 are the judges.

Thats why I never really liked American Idol even though some of the participants were good. If the participants were so lousy that the judges have to ridicule them, they should have been eliminated in the screening process itself, before reaching the round where they are aired on television.

Have you seen any episodes of Pop Idol? Its the British version of American Idol, and is supposed to be far better.

Judges... audience... I remember this one time that I was at a contest, one of the judges started talking so loudly that I stopped signing and got off stage... she was the principal of the school that was hosting the culturals. As I got off, she said, "You were singing quite well... why did you stop?" And I told her that I was surprised she even noticed I was singing.

Another time, the crowd was hooting a first time singer... I asked them to shut up or come up and stage and sing... one of the guys told me that he wasn't on stage because he couldn't sing and for that very reason this person should also get off.

Anu Malik... I'm sure that anyone else in his position... some really talented person... would have been more encouraging. He's an insecure copy cat himself.

all these talent hunts are getting too much. rite now as many as four of them r going on.

it has got more entertainment value than the real need for talent. anu malik is the lousiest person to b a judge. and whats Farha khan doing trying to judge singers. sonu nigam is a little better since he has hosted sa re ga ma before.

but over all its a waste of time watching these shows.

I think this is where the line between constructive and destructive criticism is crossed.

Hi Tiger.

In my opinion, Gentoo Image is more or less a copy of Debian Image but the portage concept makes it unique in itself. I know about the optimisation/flag stuff in Gentoo.. but the performance improvement is almost negligible.

I wanted to install Gentoo on this computer to try it out, but can't afford to spend 30 to 40 hours just doing an install :) Debian Sarge installed rather fast (only 30 minutes) for a full install with all the stuff I need, including IceWM, XFCE and Flux WMs. And man, XFCE rocks!! Its the best lightweight WM I've ever used!! I don't know why Linux users keep yakking about GNOME and KDE when you have others like Flux and XFCE :D

BTW my computer here in office is a 500MHz desktop with 384MB RAM, and it runs faster with Debian Sarge than the other 3GHz desktops which have Windows XP installed :D

I use apt-get update and apt-get upgrade to keep my software upto date :D 'apt' in Debian is way too cool  Screw RPMs :D

Have a look at every discussion/post in this DB. Don't you find at least a few stray out-of-topic messages in every discussion? b-) Anyway sorry about that. I should have started a new thread for GNU/Linux.

Actually it did. Tiger uses Gentoo Linux and I use Debian GNU/Linux.

My signature consists of a couple of regular commands I use on my computer, and which are unique to Debian GNU/Linux. Tiger noticed my signature and posted the equivalent Gentoo command here :D

No, I disagree. That girl came on Televeision of her own accord for her 15 minutes of fame. This was not something that she did not have a choice in. So, no, my sympathies do not rest with the girl. I am not condoning what Anu Malik did (hell, I can never condone anything he does), but she did know what she would be subjected to once she got there.

And, let's be practical here. Does anyone really think that the winner of the competition has not already been decided?
