The Remote "Good Doctor"

* Dr Paul Farmer set out twenty years ago to heal the world. He still thinks he can.

# Zanmi Lasante is famous in the Central Plateau, of Haiti, in part for its medical director, Dr Paul Farmer, known as Dokte Paul, or Polo, or, occasionally, Blan Paul. The women in Zanmi Lasante's kitchen call him ti blan mwen-"my little white guy." Peasant farmers like to remember how, during the violent years of the coup that deposed President Aristide, the unarmed Dokte Paul faced down a soldier who tried to enter the complex carrying a gun. One peasant told me, "God gives everyone a gift, and his gift is healing." A former patient once declared, "I believe he is a god." It was also said, in whispers, "He works with both hands"-that is, both with science and with the magic necessary to remove ensorcellments, to many Haitians the deep cause of illnesses. Most of the encomiums seem to embarrass and amuse Farmer. But this last has a painful side. The Haitian belief in illness sent by sorcery thrives on deprivation, on the long absence of effective medicine. Farmer has dozens of voodoo priests among his patients.

# On an evening ... Farmer sat in his office at Zanmi Lasante, dressed in his usual Haiti clothes, black pants and a T-shirt. He was holding aloft a large white plastic bottle. It contained indinavir, one of the new protease inhibitors for treating AIDS-the kind of magic he believes in. A sad-faced young man sat in the chair beside him. Patients never sat on the other side of his desk. He seemed bound to get as close to them as possible.

Farmer is an inch or two over six feet and thin, unusually long-legged and long-armed, and he has an agile way of folding himself into a chair and arranging himself around a patient he is examining ... He is about forty. There is a vigorous quality about his thinness. He has a narrow face and a delicate nose, which comes almost to a point. He peered at his patient through the little round lenses of wire-rimmed glasses.

# The young man was looking at his feet. He wore ragged sneakers. ... The young man had AIDS. Farmer had been treating him with antibacterials, but his condition had worsened. The young man said he was ashamed.

"Anybody can catch this-I told you that already," Farmer said in Creole. He shook the bottle, and the pills inside rattled. He asked the young man if he'd heard of this drug and the other new ones for AIDS. The man hadn't.

Well, Farmer said, the drugs didn't cure AIDS, but they would take away his symptoms and, if he was lucky, let him live for many years as if he'd never caught the virus. Farmer would begin treating him soon. He had only to promise that he would never miss a dose. ... Farmer leaned closer to him. "I don't want you to be discouraged."

The young man looked up. "Just talking to you makes me feel better. Now I know I'll sleep tonight." ... Farmer likes to tell medical students that to be a good clinician you must never let a patient know that you have problems or that you're in a hurry. "And the rewards are so great for just those simple things!" Of course, this means that some patients wait most of a day to see him, and that he rarely leaves his office before stars shiver in the louvred windows. There is a price for everything, especially virtue.

"Non-Fast" Teen : Excess Weight ...

"Well, Jonathan, what are you going to do about the excess weight you're carrying around," the doctor asked.

"I don't understand it, Doc," Jonathan replied, "I just can't seem to lose weight. I must have an overactive thyroid."

"Jonathan, the tests show that your thyroid is perfectly normal," replied the doctor. "If anything is overactive, it's your fork."

Doctor's Delight at Ice Age Find

Image

Bones from a woolly rhinoceros dating from 50,000 years ago have been found in a gravel pit near Swindon.

The partial remains of the animal's leg and toe bones were discovered in the Cotswold Water Park.

Geologist Neville Hollingworth uncovered the bones and confirmed they were from the Ice Age.

Earlier this year Dr Hollingworth, of the Natural Environment Research Council, discovered the skull of a woolly mammoth.

He said his new find was rare.

* How do I uninstall software?

How to remove a program completely.

It is always a good idea to uninstall software you no longer need as it gives you more free space on your hard disc.

WEB RESOURCES:

Removing software is a lot harder than installing it though. Simply deleting the files doesn't help because pieces of code left hanging around could disrupt other applications later. Running the Windows Add / Remove Program from the Start Menu may not achieve the task completely either as explained here.

The best thing to use is an 'uninstall' program like Uninstall Manager. A search at CNET will give you a choice of software like Complete Program Deleter, Remove and Safeclean Utilities. ZDNet Downloads also lists several candidates for the job.

These are trial versions that come with a 30-day limit on usage and you have to pay up to keep them. Some, such as Crow Bar and Remove are free.

For completely free uninstall software, search freewarehome and freeware-guide.

For more information, try RediffSearch.

Vegetarian Diets - 3 / 11

Vegetarian Diets- 3 / 11

* It is the position of the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada that appropriately planned vegetarian diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.

# This position paper reviews the current scientific data related to key nutrients for vegetarians, including protein, iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin D, riboflavin, vitamin B-12, vitamin A, n-3 fatty acids, and iodine. A vegetarian, including vegan, diet can meet current recommendations for all of these nutrients. In some cases, use of fortified foods or supplements can be helpful in meeting recommendations for individual nutrients.

# Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence.

# Vegetarian diets offer a number of nutritional benefits, including lower levels of saturated fat, cholesterol, and animal protein as well as higher levels of carbohydrates, fiber, magnesium, potassium, folate, and antioxidants such as vitamins C and E and phytochemicals.

# Vegetarians have been reported to have lower body mass indices than nonvegetarians, as well as lower rates of death from ischemic heart disease; vegetarians also show lower blood cholesterol levels; lower blood pressure; and lower rates of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and prostate and colon cancer.

# They can play key roles in educating vegetarian clients about food sources of specific nutrients, food purchase and preparation, and any dietary modifications that may be necessary to meet individual needs. Menu planning for vegetarians can be simplified by use of a food guide that specifies food groups and serving sizes.

Weight Loss - 4 / 11 ... 8) :? :?:

# WEIGHT LOSS SUPPLEMENTS ARE TOTALLY WORTHLESS!
# ... How To Lose Weight (FAT) WITHOUT Supplements, Drugs, Or Equipment!
# Does Permanent Weight Loss Require Supplements or Equipment?
- I wish there was a way for me to scream "NO!!!" loud enough for all to hear my cry. STOP investing in a slew of supplements that will NEVER work, no matter how long or often you use them (read on to learn why). NEVER purchase gimmicked exercise machines that promise miracle results (whether it be for the stomach, buns, hips, thighs, or ANY body part), but in the end, only serve as a cheap giveaway at your next yard sale. Ab machines promising to firm your stomach and help you lose weight, all in a mere 30 days, DO NOT ENHANCE THE APPEARANCE OF OR FLATTEN YOUR WAISTLINE, and will NOT BURN ONE OUNCE OF EXCESS FAT. Yet, they do add nicely to your weight loss related junk collection.
- Realize that body fat not only attaches itself to our stomach, hips, thighs, and arms, but also to our FACE...losing fat improves the way we look from HEAD TO TOE!

Weight Loss - 6 / 11 ... 8) :? :?:

* The Key To A Flat Stomach
# Can you obtain a rock hard stomach from a plastic pillow? What about a wheelbarrow? It would be nice if you could, which is why SO MANY people bought those frightening abdominal "rockers" and "wheels". On one box, I saw something like "Over 250,000 sold", which means that over 250,000 individuals wasted their time and money on an overblown bird feeder. First off, FAT IS THE ONLY REASON WHY THE ABS (STOMACH MUSCLES) ARE INVISIBLE. Case closed! Even if you perform thousands of crunches each day, OR EVEN ALL DAY, you will NEVER HAVE A FIRM MID-SECTION WHEN FAT HIDES THE UNDERLYING MUSCLE! The key to losing this stored fat is PROPER DIET -- you can even neglect exercise completely, and if you follow an effective diet routine, you will burn body fat (exercise simply enhances the rate of fat loss WHEN YOU FOLLOW A PROPER DIET)!

Weight Loss - 8 / 11: Vegetarian Weight Loss Plan

by HH » Mon Nov 08, 2004 11:21 am

Weight Loss - 8 / 11 ... Vegetarian Weight Loss Plan 8) :? :?:

# Becoming a vegetarian doesn't automatically mean that you'll lose weight. Big helpings of high-fat protein sources (think cheese and peanut butter) can actually cause vegetarians to gain weight. The solution? Follow our healthy Vegetarian Weight Loss Plan, and you'll not only lose weight, you'll boost your overall health at the same time.
# Follow Three Basic Categories: On the Run, Family Friendly and Cheap and Easy. Stick with one theme or mix and match these meals to suit your lifestyle. For example, you may choose an On the Run breakfast while you're driving to work, grab a Cheap and Easy lunch, and then prepare a Family Friendly dinner. Add snacks between meals if you're hungry or need more energy to keep up with your exercise routine. Breakfasts have 350 to 450 calories, lunches and dinners have 400 to 500 calories, and snacks have 100 to 200 calories.

Life's Exit : Great Loss - 12 / 11 ...

*‘I urge you all not to let my bhaiya’s sacrifice go in vain’

- Dhananjay, brother of late S K Dubey.

I read the article 'Letter to a Murdered Mate'... I don’t have any word to express my feelings. The media in general and the Express team in particular have been of great support when me and my family needed it the most. I am really overwhelmed by your team’s effort in raising this issue and by the response of your readers. I hope that you will follow the story till the culprits are brought to book and will continue your effort for making this country atleast a bit similar to what my bhaiya used to think of: ‘‘A corruption-free India.’’

I know this is impossible. No, I should not be using that word because my bhaiya used to tell me ‘‘There is nothing impossible... even the word ‘impossible’ itself says ‘I M Possible’. I am sure that you will continue your effort to realise this really difficult task. And I will always be there in this fight. I urge you all not to let my bhaiya’s sacrifice go in vain.

Foods to Eat for Good Health - 14 / 11

#An optimum diet containing an abundance of high-nutrient, low stress foods is the basis for good health, energy, and a sense of well-being. During nearly two decades of working with thousands of women patients, I have been continually impressed by the health benefits that good nutritional habits provide. As a result, I spend a great deal of time counseling my patients nutritionally. It is important to me that women have the knowledge and information that they need to effectively plan and prepare their own meals.
# Be sure to incorporate these foods abundantly in your daily diet while enjoying their good flavors and textures: Whole Grains, Hot Cereals and Cold Cereals, Muffins, Breads, and Crackers, Pancakes and Waffles, Pasta, Sprouts, Cooked grains, Legumes (Beans and Peas), Seeds and Nuts ... and Fruits & Vegetables .

The Book of Secrets - 16 / 11 : Daily Inspiration

Image
#The Book of Secrets

Every life is a book of secrets, ready to be opened. The secret of perfect love is found there, along with the secrets of healing, compassion, faith, and the most elusive one of all: who we really are. We are still mysteries to ourselves, despite the proximity of these answers, and what we most long to know remains lodged deep inside.
# The Book of Secrets--a crystalline distillation of insights and wisdom accumulated over the lifetime of one of the great spiritual thinkers of our time--provides an exquisite new tool.
# Because answers to the questions at the center of life are counterintuitive, they are often hidden from view, sequestered from our everyday gaze. In his ongoing quest to elevate our experience, bestselling author Deepak Chopra has isolated fifteen secrets that drive the narrative of this inspiring book--and of our lives. From "The World Is in You" and "What You Seek, You Already Are" to "Evil Is Not Your Enemy" and "You Are Truly Free When You Are Not a Person," The Book of Secrets is rich with insights, a priceless treasure that can transport us beyond change to transformation, and from there to a sacred place where we can savor the nectar of enlightenment.

** Daily Inspiration

Our existence as embodied beings is purely momentary; what are a hundred years in eternity? But if we shatter the chains of egotism, and melt into the ocean of humanty, we share its dignity. To feel what we are something is to set up a barrier b/w God and ourselves; to cease feeling that we are something is to become one with God.

—Gandhi

Fruitful Diet - 18 / 11

by HH » Thu Nov 18, 2004 5:31 pm

Fruitful Diet - 18 / 11

* One in five children never eats fruit. Here's how to make sure yours isn't one of them
# A recent government survey on the diet and nutritional habits of children between ages four and 18 found that on average, children ate less than half the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables per day and that one in five children didn't eat any fruit at all.
# Some primary schools, which have already replaced traditional crisp and sweet tuck shops with fruit tuck shops, have even reported an improvement in the results of their standard assessment test (SATs) scores.
# Whether fruit and vegetables can have this direct effect on concentration and indeed IQ, is still to be proven. But we do know that fruit and vegetables are excellent sources of antioxidant nutrients such as vitamins C, A and E and other phytochemicals such as flavonoids, which work together to protect against heart disease - the origins of which can be early on in life.
# How To Get Kids to Enjoy More Fruit and Vegetables? Here are some Top Tips:

*** Start Them Young
Introduce your children to a wide variety of tastes as soon as you begin weaning. Humans are born with an innate liking for sweetness and many fruits and vegetables are naturally sweet which helps the process.
# ... If your child or children still refuse to eat it, just accept it - there are plenty of other veggies that are just as nutritious.

Life is Just a Bowl of Berries

Berries are rich in antioxidants.

Strawberries

What if you had access to a product that had a strong potential to help you fight off the onset of cancer or arrest the growth of established malignancies? What if evidence showed it could potentially forestall the aging process and keep your mind sharp well into old age? What if this same substance contained chemical compounds that could lower your risk of heart attack? Wouldn't you eagerly travel far and wide to locate such an important piece of the health puzzle?

There's no need to search exotic locales for a mysterious herb or ask for a wonder drug at your pharmacy.

Look no further for this miracle food than berries! Berries can provide nutrients that can improve your health and the quality of your life for years to come. Scientists who study them say the antioxidants in berries have the potential to:

• Slow aging.
• Boost immunity
• Prevent, slow or even reverse cancer.
• Strengthen our hearts and circulatory systems.

Tips For Berry Picks

When picking berries, select those that are plump and shiny, true to their variety's colour. Stick with berries in season … It's best if you can select the berries yourself from an open bin.

# Eating plenty of Fruits and Vegetables may be good for your Heart Health, but a new study finds it Won't Lower Your Overall Risk of Developing Cancer.

# Fruits also contain fiber. Fiber helps keep your digestive track healthy. # Fruits are low in calories.
# Eat More Fruits for Good Health.

Go Nuts For Health, Nutrition! - 21/ 11

Go Nuts For Health, Nutrition! - 21/ 11

* Go Nuts For Health, Nutrition

# Nuts are considered nature's perfect fuel food. Packed with energy, fiber, vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids, they can be an important-and tasty-component of a healthy, active lifestyle. Long valued by vegetarians for their meatless protein power, nuts also find favor with today's carbohydrate-counting dieters. Their natural flavor makes them favorites of cooks and diners of all stripes.

# Americans know the nutritional value of nuts. A survey found that a majority of adults rated nuts the healthiest snack option. Medical studies show nuts can help reduce the risk of many common health problems, including heart disease, stroke and arthritis. Nuts can also help fight depression and may protect against diabetes and some cancers.

# More good news about nuts is that researchers have found that nuts can even help with weight control when consumed in moderation. Eating a handful of nuts prior to a meal helps curb appetite.

# Walnuts:A Wealth of Omega-3
Though most commonly used in baking in the United States, walnuts are a key ingredient in a healthy and flavorful Mediterranean diet. Loaded with many times more heart-healthy omega-3 oil than comparable servings of salmon, leafy greens or tofu, walnuts can be sprinkled into soups or salads to boost both flavor and nutrition. You can also try them chopped and mixed with a handful of raisins on your cereal.

# Nuts contain the antioxidants found in vitamin E, essential minerals such as magnesium, selenium, copper and manganese, and even fiber for more effective digestion. Thiamin, niacin, folate, phosphorus and zinc are all found in nuts. Whether you eat them as snacks or at meals, your favorite nuts-walnuts, almonds, pecans and others-are a storehouse of vitamins, minerals and other compounds your body needs for good health.

Health & Wellbeing -
Nuts: Not All Fats Are Created Equal - 25/ 11

* Nuts: Not All Fats Are Created Equal

# Nuts have had a roller coaster reputation. Once upon a time, nuts were held in high esteem. Romans considered nuts food for the gods. Incas made pots in the shape of highly prized peanuts. Walnuts were used to treat head ailments in Renaissance days, given their similarity to the brain. More recent decades have shunned nuts, fearing their high fat content and potential for weight gain. But all fats are not created equal; with new research on the rise, the lowly nut may well be at the top of your grocery list of health-promoting staples.
# Heart Disease and Diabetes

Many studies from around the world have found that people who eat nuts on a regular basis can cut their risk of heart disease by up to half. A small handful of walnuts or almonds, about 1 to 3 ounces, can help lower high blood cholesterol levels and other blood factors linked to heart disease. A major study that tracked thousands of nurses found that those who ate just an ounce of nuts or peanut butter 5 times a week, lowered their risk of Type 2 diabetes by at least 20%. It appears as though plant fats have plenty of health benefits.

# Benefits of Nuts

*
Nuts come from plants so they're cholesterol-free.
*
High in plant protein, they're a mainstay for vegetarians
*
Their mono and polyunsaturated fats help lower cholesterol when substituted for more saturated, animal fats.
*
High folate and B vitamin levels may help lower blood homocysteine levels, reducing heart disease risk.
*
Valuable potassium, magnesium and copper are all linked to heart health.
*
The antioxidant Vitamin E may also be heart protective.
*
The dietary fibre in nuts helps manage blood sugar levels, lowers cholesterol and benefits colon health.
*
A variety of healthy plant substances provide additional antioxidant and cholesterol-lowering benefits.

# Which Nuts Are Best?

Nuts have more in common than not. They are one of the best plant sources of protein despite being high in calories and unsaturated fat. A few differences set some apart from others. Walnuts are highest in omega-3 fatty acids (also found in red fatty fish), popular for helping lower cholesterol. Almonds are a great source of bone-building calcium. Brazil nuts are high in the antioxidant selenium, linked to helping prevent some cancers.

Chestnuts have the least calories and fat, while macadamia nuts have the most. Dry-roasted nuts have the same fat and calories as oil-roasted. Nut butters have the same nutritional advantages as nuts. Peanuts are similar to other nuts nutritionally, but are part of the legume family, which includes dried beans and peas.

Fortunately the high fat content of nuts makes them very filling, helping curb hunger for long periods of time. An ounce or two a day of nuts or nut butters is all you need for valuable health benefits. Instead of using nuts as a snack where you might be tempted to go beyond 1-2 ounces, incorporate nuts into meals: add chopped nuts to fruit or vegetable salads, yogurt, oatmeal, dry cereals, muffins or loaves, pancakes, stir fries, rice dishes ... Health experts recommend we enjoy at least 2 plant-based, vegetarian meals per week. Hopefully nuts will find a place in your home.

Watery Diet! - Want to Lose Weight? Just Add More Water - 28 / 11

* Want to Lose Weight? Just Add More Water

New Delhi, Nov 26 (PTI) Want to lose weight without really trying? Just replace some of the high calorie foods you eat with fruits, vegetables and other water dense foods that keep you just as full.
It sounds too good to be true, but new research suggests that it is possible to lose weight by making small changes in the diet.

The study, conducted in Pennsylavania State University, suggests replacing some of the high calorie foods in the daily diet with fruits, vegetables and other water dense foods that keep you just as full.

The women in the study ate a whopping 800 fewer calories a day this way. "I am not a great advocate of simply telling people to eat less, because they are going to get hungry if they do that... What we are trying to do is give people satisfying amounts of food that are less calorie dense," says Barbara Rolls, a nutrition researcher who conducted the study.

Rolls says although weight loss was not considered in the study, the reduction of 800 calories per day likely would result in a weight loss of about a pound and a half over the course of a week.

"The rationale behind eating water dense foods is that whatever you eat can go out of the system very fast," says Dr P K Chowbey, an expert in obesity management at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here.

He cites the example of an apple which has 98 per cent liquid and very few calories. Compare it with a sweet of same size and it will have 20 times more calories. PTI
