* Dearer Jaggery ...

# Kochi - 17 Sep: Sugar sells in the range of Rs 17 to 18 per Kg but Jaggery sells at Rs 24 per Kg, as against 'Rs 5 to 6 lower than that of Sugar'. Jaggery is used for Special Delicacies ... Or will the 'dearer Jaggery' force the people to think otherwise? - TNIE, 18 Sep 2004, p 15.

Press Sense - 5 / 10 : Advantages of Outsourcing ...

* Advantages of Outsourcing ...

New York, Sep 27.(PTI): The advantages of outsourcing from the US to cheap brain power nations like India have been diminishing because the wage gap between America and Asia is shrinking, a media report has said.

"The wage gap between the US and Asia is shrinking. Pay scales are rising fast in India and China for college- educated, English-speaking professionals," the Business Week said.

The weekly says the reports that General Electric (GE) plans to sell its entire business-processing operation in India for USD one billion raises the "interesting question of whether the offshoring phenomenon may be

peaking."

"Not that it will stop being a key part of corporations' global strategy. In an integrated business world, you go where the best talent is. But the surge in companies going to India, China and Eastern Europe in search of very cheap brain power may soon be coming to an end - far sooner than anyone has anticipated," the report said.

The Business Week wrote: "Since these Indians and Chinese aren't anyone's fools, they've been demanding - and getting - increasingly higher compensation. Afer all, these web-savvy men and women just have to check the human-resources websites of eastern companies to

see what their counterparts are making. And indeed they have, as their rising compensation proves."

Press Sense - 7/ 10 : "Non-Sense" Doctors ...

* Wither Hippocratic Oath ... "Non-Sense" Doctors ...

WARANGAL, OCT. 6. In what can be described as an inhuman act, doctors from the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital prevented the doctors of the Regional Eye Hospital from undertaking operations on patients who were already administered anaesthesia here today.

Irritation Complaint

Three patients were given the sedative and were taken to the operation theatre.

Suddenly, a group of doctors from MGM thronged on the hospital and dragged the patients out before locking the theatre.

Seven other patients were being readied for the operations at that time.

Fatimabi of Eturunagaram, one among the three patients, complained of irritation and other minor complications after the effect of the sedative came down.

An elderly patient, Afzal, said that doctors should fight with the Government rather than harass elderly patients.

"It is not proper to punish us as we have come from far off places. We have nobody to look after and we are in a hurry to go home,'' he pointed out.

Services Sparse

Meanwhile, following the incidents at the Gandhi Hospital, Secunderabad, doctors at the MGM are on strike here at the MGM Hospital, the biggest hospital in the north Telangana region. Patients from neighbouring Karimnagar, Khammam, Adilabad and Nizamabad too visit the hospital. Services at the out-patient block were completely stopped.

On an average, about 3,000 patients are registered at the out-patient block and there would be 500 admissions in various blocks.

The doctors issued an ultimatum to the State Government that action should be taken against those responsible for the incident, or else they would stall the emergency medical services too.

by HH » Mon Oct 11, 2004 10:26 am

Press Sense - 11 / 10 : "Non-Sense" SEVIS Fee ...

New SEVIS Fee Mandatory for US-bound Students

HYDERABAD, OCT. 10. Under the new federal tracking rules of the Unites States, foreign students planning to study in the US will have to pay $ 100 more under the Student and Exchange and Visitor Information System (SEVIS), a newly introduced concept to keep track of international students studying in all the US universities. The new fee has come into effect from September 1 this year and students have to submit their applications for visa only after paying the SEVIS fee or else they would be rejected.

Scholars and exchange visitors will also have to pay the fee through the Internet with a credit card or a cheque in dollars payable to identified US financial institutions. Following payment, students will be mailed a receipt that must be presented when they apply for the visa.

Simple Procedure

The SEVIS Fee is being collected to maintain the tracking system of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

SEVIS allows the DHS to collect and manage the information for foreign students and exchange visitors in the United States by maintaining up-to-date data that can be accessed electronically. SEVIS has simplified what was once a manual process, resulting in more accurate and timely data, faster processing and fewer delays for student and exchange visitors. Nearly eight million students and exchange visitors are registered with SEVIS at over 8,700 approved schools and programmes in the US.

Cause of Concern

However, the new system is not only burdening the students at the entry point itself but is also likely to put an additional financial load on them once they enter the institutions as several universities have also decided to increase the fee by $ 50 to $ 100 per semester due to the new DHS tracking rules. They will now have to add necessary staff, software and equipment to support the system.

Some universities that have increased the fee for international students include the University of Florida and University of South Florida while universities across the country are also considering a hike. "This is certainly a cause of concern for Indian students," says an educational consultant in the city.

"A majority of the students are not aware of this new fee and they need to pay it before going for the visa," says an aspirant. Students can look in for more information on the mode of payment on the website - http://www.fmjfee.com.

The new fee may not be sweet to the aspirants' ears, but it has been opposed by several groups in the US universities when the proposal was made. Some groups within the US raised objections that international students were being targeted unfairly. Apprehensions have also been raised that international students stand to lose from SEVIS with increased risk of deportation if they engage in such suspicious activities like even dropping a class.

Press Sense - 12/ 10 : Grim Water Scenario by 2020

Experts See Grim Water Scenario by 2020

HYDERABAD, OCT. 11. With increasing population, the State could be moving to a scenario where the present `water scarce' situation may further worsen by the year 2020.

This was stated in the `State of Environment Report of Andhra Pradesh - 2003' quoting studies conducted by the Water Conservation Mission. The report has been prepared by the Environment Protection Training and Research Institute (EPTRI).

According to UN indicators, if the percentage of water withdrawal is more than 40, the country or region is considered `water scarce'. The State's current withdrawal of available water is already 58 per cent. The per capita annual water resources works out to be slightly more than 1,400 cubic meters and utilisation about 800 cubic meters.

A region or country is deemed `water scarce' when the annual per capita availability is below 1,700 Cu.M and `severe' when it is less than 1,000 Cu.M.

Referring to the Government's estimates of water requirement for various sectors in the light of the total availability of 1,08,012 million cubic meters (MCM), the report says the 2025 projections for water needs (1,14,101 MCM) could not be met unless measures are ensured to conserve more rainwater or judicious use of available water through appropriate recycling.

Groundwater

It says the fall of groundwater tables in some regions became alarming in recent years `resulting in the widespread phenomenon of desertification.' Well irrigation recorded a phenomenal rise in the last three decades and moved from the third to the first position in terms of area irrigated by a single source. "This, coupled with the declining area under tanks, is creating enormous ecological and social problems."

The report is critical of the promotion of lift irrigation schemes as they entailed huge consumption of power and put pressure on natural sources even though the State is facing water scarcity.

Referring to the ongoing and proposed irrigation projects, it says there will be pressure for water if proper agricultural practices were not encouraged, especially by adopting dry irrigated crops which use less water.

Press Sense - 28/ 10 : Instant Nonsense...

* Instant Nonsense...

September 30, 2004

The Boston Globe claims the public "seemingly" has an "insatiable demand for campaign polls." Sez who? The qualifier doesn't relieve the Globe of the responsibility of backing up this assertion.

Toward the end of the article we get this:

Despite potential flaws, pollsters say the public is increasingly showing a direct interest in their numbers, rather than being content to receive them through media filters. Gallup, for example, has started a blog to explain--and, lately, to defend--its methods to the general public.

What pollsters say this? How do they know? These are basic critical questions.

The article sweeps across several polling issues but is pegged on a CBS effort to track the reactions of undecided voters in real time during the debate. The results will be displayed in a dynamic bar chart on the CBS web site. This is just nonsense--interesting geeky nonsense to be sure, but still nonsense.

What role does the immediate reaction to isolated comments play in a citizen's political choices as recorded by a vote?

There may very well be an interesting and important answer to this question (that will require a proper study to discover). The data from this chart, however, will be instantly reported and commented upon without the slightest understanding of what the data really mean.

Correction: This isn't just nonsense. This is dangerous nonsense.

Press Sense - 29 / 10 : Hyderabad Needs A United Andhra Pradeshcolor

No credible political leader or analyst, save the hard core elements of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), no serious business leader, save cronies marginalised by the present dispensation, no senior civil servant, save those who eye new jobs in a new state capital, actually believes that the expected impressive performance of the TRS in the assembly elections in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh will in fact lead to the bifurcation of the state. All hope for a compromise formula.

Most stakeholders in the statehood of the Telugus concede that ignoring the problem of Telangana’s alienation, more than its backwardness, was a costly error of judgment on the part of AP chief minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Nara Chandrababu Naidu. However, few believe that ... the Congress-TRS combine will actually result in the bifurcation of the state.

* Today there is a bizarre gap between the expected political sweep of the separatists in the districts and the nonchalance of a hep Hyderabad where life and business go on as usual.

* It is hoped that the Congress Party will be able to quickly distance itself from the idea of breaking up the state and will come up with a compromise formula that will address the problem of Telangana’s backwardness and alienation within the framework of a united AP.

* Senior Congress leaders quite openly and willingly extend that assurance when asked what the party’s stance would be on Telangana. They point to ideas that have been around from ever since the States Re-organisation Commission recognised the problem of Telangana’s backwardness. Ideas like a Regional Development Committee, district-specific development budgets, investment in new irrigation and infrastructure projects, and so on.

* The Communist Party leaders are equally categorical. They may have arrived at seat adjustments with the TRS but they don’t support the idea of bifurcating the state. Indeed, the Communists gained wide acceptance in the state in the 1950s on the slogan of a “visalandhra” — a united state of the Telugu speaking people. The BJP also fudges the issue today, having supported the idea of a separate state till recently. The TDP has, of course, campaigned on the platform of a united AP.

* Why is there such universal reticence within Hyderabad’s political, academic and business elite to accept the idea of the state’s bifurcation in the face of ground level support for the TRS? Why has Hyderabad not been ignited by this desire this time round like in 1968-72?

# Hyderabad has changed. In the past three decades, it has grown to emerge as one of India’s top five metros. It has become globalised in its reach thanks to the growth of a range of service sector professions. Mr Naidu not only cleaned up the city, built a new infrastructure for it, enticed new institutions and business into it, created a new stake in the city’s future among the state’s more entrepreneurial classes, but he has set new aspirational goals for the city with its global connectivity and reach.

# Till a decade ago, successful Hyderabadis aspired to go to Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, to the Persian Gulf and to the West in search of a better life, better professional prospects. Today, successful Hyderabadis want to return home to be a part of the city’s new growth process. There is a new elite in this growing metropolis that has a stake in being part of a larger, faster growing state. Hyderabad’s ability to compete with Bangalore and catch up with Mumbai is based on its links to the wider Andhra hinterland of capital, enterprise and talent.

# A separate Telangana can slow down, perhaps even halt this process. There could be a flight of capital, to coastal cities, to other states. If Hyderabad’s “cosmopolitan” elite migrates, Telangana does not as yet have its modernised, self-confident, cash-rich upper class ready to step in. The city will suffer from the state’s bifurcation. Old communal wounds may get raked.

# Even Mr Naidu’s critics admit that he has placed the city on a global map, and improved its connectivity and infrastructure. Rural Telangana was perhaps neglected but urban Hyderabad prospered. Its take-off will come in an environment of forward-looking modernism that the city’s now maturing elite can offer if it remains invested in it and does not take flight from a loss of faith.

* Hyderabad is no longer just the administrative capital of the state but a new business and knowledge centre with a forward-looking vision. It needs the kind of developmental leadership that Mr Naidu gave it in recent years.

* The politics of a separate Telangana will regress into new caste and communal equations that will inhibit Hyderabad’s progress. Telangana needs a development agenda, a stronger voice in decision making, a better share of state revenues, implementation of old, unkept promises. It also needs the growth impulses from a growing Hyderabad in a united Andhra Pradesh. A separate state is no solution to its genuine problems.

Press Sense - 30 / 10 : Dal-bhat and Paranthas ... No!

Indian Food Gone Global: Thai Curry, Pasta Replace Dal-Roti ...

New Delhi, Oct 29 (PTI) The 'Global' bug has hit the Indian platter hard! Dal-bhat and Paranthas are fast making a disappearing act with Thai and Chinese cuisine tantalising the taste buds of the average Indian. While for the connosieurs, it is French all the way.

Indian tastes are growing global and the trend is here to stay, predict the food 'gurus'. No more are the Indians inclined to satiate their appetites with the traditional limited options and international cuisine has created a niche` in the desi palates, quite literally.

Led by the globetrotting genre, foodies here are not only more aware of the international food trends, but are also following the mantra of 'dil maange more' sans any restrictions.

"International cuisine is fast becoming popular in India thanks to the jet-setting travellers. When they come back home they demand the same food that they had savoured elsewhere in the world", says Amit Choudhary, executive chef at a five-star hotel here.

The food preferences, however, vary and while an average Indian is going ga-ga over the Chinese and Thai cuisines, it is French or Italian for the more sophisticated palates.

"Chinese were the first ones to make inroad into the burgeoning Indian food market but over the past decade Thai and Mexican cuisine has followed suit," says Rabindra Seth, noted travelogue and culinary writer. ---------------

Press Sense - 31 / 10 : Kalam Shares His Proudest Moment with Students

New Delhi, Oct 31 (PTI) When a polio-affected child strutting with a three kg artificial limb got a light-weight 300 gms caliper and she jumped with joy, that was the proudest moment of his life, says President A P J Abdul Kalam.

After the child received the Floor Reaction Orthosis (artificial limb) made with carbon fibre used in defence equipment, it started jumping, running and riding a bicycle.

"Her parents shed tears of joy. I was in real bliss," said the 73-year-old architect of India's missile development programme in response to a query from Manjit Sehgal, a class ten student of St George College in Mussourie.

The President responds candidly to queries from children across the country ranging from politics, pressing problems confronting the country, science and technology and even personal ones.

He has opened a 'Children's Corner' in his website where youngsters can quiz him on anything under the Sun.

Behind every successful man there is a woman. You are still a bachelor. What is the secret of your successful career? was a poser from Jamia Milia scholar Shankar.

The man who rose from humble beginnings to occupy the country's highest office said "I have come from a joint family having father, mother, sisters and the whole family and people of India are partners in my success".

Press Sense - 1 / 11 : Elections - India Vs US

Elections: India Vs US

By G Parthasarathy

Monday, 01 November , 2004, 08:31

Not since the Presidential election of 1960, when John Kennedy triumphed over Richard Nixon, has an American Presidential election been so closely and bitterly contested as the ongoing race between George W Bush and Senator John Kerry.

# If George Bush tries to scare the American electorate by claiming that the election of Vietnam War veteran Kerry would lead to an American defeat in the war against terrorism, Kerry responds by scaring the American population, claiming that Bush's re-election would result in a restoration of a draft compelling the youth to join the armed forces and that Bush would make life miserable for the aged by raising the age bar for social security from 65 to 72.

# Unlike in India, there is no central authority like the Election Commission that overseas the Presidential Elections in the US. Voter Registration and Conduct of Elections here are done by individual states. State Governors have been busy over the past few months registering new voters. Thousands of new voters have been thus registered in recent times.

# This has opened the floodgates for future litigation as the eligibility of each voter could be bitterly contested. The two candidates are said to have sent some 47,000 lawyers across the country to contest virtually every vote they find adversarial. Interestingly, even balloting and counting procedures vary from state to state.

# China and India have figured in the campaign rhetoric for the first time as their educated technical personnel are seen as magnets eating into American jobs.

# But given the closeness of the race, it is expected that the deciding states will be Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania as it is expected that whoever wins, two of these three states will secure a majority of the Electoral College even if he secures a minority of votes cast.

* Watching the way the American elections are being conducted, we in India have to be thankful to people like Seshan, Gill and Krishnamurthy, who have been vested with the authority to impartially supervise elections, and have largely succeeded in doing so, despite the voter intimidation, rigging and manipulation of voters lists that one has witnessed in some of our states.

Press Sense - 2 / 11 : Naidu for Unity

Naidu for Unity

HYDERABAD, NOV. 1. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President, N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Monday said development of backward regions and removal of poverty was possible only in an integrated State and that separatism was not a solution.

Addressing party men after unfurling the national tricolour at the party office, on the State Formation Day, he wondered how the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi could continue their "opportunistic alliance", when the former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, had rejected the demand for division of the State, twice.

Selfish interests

He said the movement for separate States was always motivated by selfish interest. People who lost ministerial berths would launch a movement and then join the Congress. This has been happening several times and the latest would be no different. "There was no intention of developing the region nor do justice to weaker sections," he remarked.

Mr. Naidu said all through Telugus wanted their own State and they got, thanks to the sacrifice of people like Potti Sriramulu. Boorgula Ramakrishna Rao too sacrificed the post of the Chief Minister of Hyderabad State for the cause.

Recalling the nine-year rule of TDP, he said it gave equal importance to education, health, irrigation and power. The State made rapid strides, helping reduce poverty.

* Visakhapatnam:

# The TDP chief accused the Congress of reducing the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to a `dummy PM' while issuing Government advertisements without his photos, while addressing party workers here.

"It's an epitome of sycophancy by which the State Government issued full page advertisements in newspapers on the occasion of the State Formation Day with photos of the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, the late Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, and that of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy," he said.

# Sidelining `neutrals'

Mr. Naidu said the party would debar `neutral' persons from either holding party posts or getting ticket in the future. This seems to be part of the party's fire-fighting mission after it lost the election to the State Assembly and the Lok Sabha. "After a detailed post-mortem, we have realised that distancing the party leadership from ordinary cadres and loyal workers, undue prominence accorded to outsiders at the cost of partymen and indiscipline were some of the reasons for the bad show," he said.

Press Sense - 3 / 11 : India Make Heavy Weather of Fourth Test Against Australia

* India Make Heavy Weather of Fourth Test Against Australia

Mumbai, Nov 3 (PTI) India plunged into trouble straightaway as they were reduced to 12 for two before rains intervened on a truncated opening day in the fourth and final cricket Test against Australia at the Wankhede stadium here today.

The toss of the coin went in favour of India for the first time in the series, but the hosts having decided to go in with only one frontline paceman in Zaheer Khan had no option but to bat first in conditions ideal for seam bowling.

India lost both openers Virender Sehwag and debutant Gautam Gambhir off successive balls, the innings barely into the fourth over following a more than four hour delay owing to unseasonal rains.

Sehwag, who has been the lone top order batsman to be among the runs in the rubber which Australia have already pocketed with a 2-0 advantage, was dropped when on zero by debutant Nathan Huaritz off a slash to gully off Glenn McGrath.

However, the gangling Aussie pace ace bowled the flamboyant opener off the last ball in his very next over through the gate as the batsman aimed to play a very ambitious drive away from his body. PTI

Press Sense - 4 / 11 : Helmet Rule: Police Drive Home the Point

HYDERABAD, NOV. 3. Some fretted, some fumed, some sought to explain while a few sped away as the traffic policemen asked two-wheeler riders without helmets to pull over at various intersections on Wednesday. For some it was "pure harassment". But, at the end of the day the city police sent the message loud and clear -- Wear a helmet and no excuses please.

Despite a mixed reaction from people on the first day of implementing the helmet rule on Wednesday, the traffic police acted tough albeit letting off women riders with a warning. From a Greyhound constable to the Jukkal MLA, everyone riding a two-wheeler without helmet were issued summons to appear for a two-hour counselling session on the importance of wearing helmets on Thursday.

* Argument by Riders

However, many questioned the propriety behind making the rule compulsory. "I feel giddy even if a small object is kept on my head. How can I wear it?" argued Siddamsetty Rajnikanth of Bharani Complex. "It will be better if you travelled in a four-wheeler," the policeman advised him. "Madam, I have an interview tomorrow and I am asked to attend the counselling during the same time," a harried youngster told the Additional Commissioner (Traffic), Tejdeep Kaur Menon. "Attend the session any time during the next two months," pat came the reply.

* MLA's Son Stopped

The Jukkal MLA, S. Gangaram, who was riding pillion on his son's motorcycle, faced some embarrassing moments when the policemen flagged down the vehicle. The MLA questioned the logic behind the sudden implementation of the rule. But he left the place `convinced', after Ms. Tejdeep intervened. Limited manpower forced the drive to be confined only to a few places.

Press Sense - 6 / 11 : Arafat's Last Will Bestows Leadership on Tunis-based Leader

Jerusalem, Nov 6 (PTI)

* Amid growing confusion over the future of Palestinian leadership in post-Arafat era, the veteran leader is said to have issued a last political will in which he suggests that the head of the PLO politburo, Farouk Kadoumi, based in Tunis, succeed him.

# Arafat reportedly handed over the copies of his last will to his wife Suha and his cousin, Nasser al-Kidwa, who serves as Palestinian Ambassador to the UN. A senior official close to the PA Chairman is said to have strengthened claims by saying that the leader in his last moments of clarity asked to summon Kadoumi to his bed in order to tell him "something important." The officials are said to have added that if Kadoumi does accept the position, he would head the PA together with Abu Ala, while former security chiefs Mohammad Dahlan and Jibril Rajoub would be their subordinates.

# The relationship between Kadoumi and Arafat has had its share of ups and downs. The signing of the 1993 Oslo Accords separated them, as Kadoumi joined the opposition and refused to enter the territories.

However, about a year ago, their relationship appeared to be back on track.

Press Sense - 7 / 11 : Call to Go Green This Deepavali

HYDERABAD, NOV. 6. With the festival of lights, Deepavali round the corner the Directorate of National Green Corps in association with the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board is taking up a campaign against noisy crackers for more environment friendly celebrations.

The campaign is to be taken up by schoolchildren all over the State under the aegis of the National Green Corps with the slogan: "Indiscriminate use of crackers is hazardous to public health." The NGC Director, W. Prasanna Kumar, told presspersons here on Saturday that crackers producing sound levels of above 85 decibels cause noise pollution.

Health Hazards

"The sound effect of chain crackers with 100, 500 or 1,000 sticks can lead to temporary or even permanent shift in hearing capacities and is not good for those with blood pressure.

It can also lead to deafness straightaway in some cases,"
he warned. The Director points out that traditionally, Deepavali has been a festival of lighting up traditional lights, which unfortunately, in the course of time has been taken over by loud firecrackers and electric lights.

"The fire crackers cause both noise and air pollution," he said. At an average most crackers cause 125 decibels, which is said to be the permissible limit, but the chain crackers have a battering effect and cause much damage.

Science Fair

As part of the campaign, the sound levels of different crackers would be demonstrated and ill effects explained during the District Science Fair to be held at Kapra from November 9 to 11 to be attended by NGC students. They are drawn from about 12,500 schools. Students would be informed about the permissible sound levels at different areas.

Along with the Science Fair, seminars are also being arranged on noise pollution in collaboration with ENT specialists from the city for alerting school teachers on the health effects of exposure to noise pollution. These seminars would be held at Khairatabad on Nov.9, Himayatnagar on November 10 and Ameerpet on November 11.

Mr. Prasanna Kumar said the results of the campaign would be placed at the workshop-cum-exhibition to be held on December 1 and 2 where schools would make presentations on their efforts towards reducing noise pollution during Deepavali, controlling vehicular pollution and energy conservation. The best entries would be sponsored for a trekking expedition in Rishi Valley, he added.

Press Sense - 8 / 11 : Ramadan a Joyful Season of Spiritual Fulfillment

Fasting only a part of Muslims' observance, which includes helping the poor and needy, doing good works and avoiding moral missteps.

- Hesham A. Hassaballa, a Chicago Doctor and Freelance Writer, 7 Nov 2004

The darkness was as thick as it was black. As he sat deep in reflection and contemplation--of the injustice of the world around him and how hundreds of idols came to desecrate the house that Abraham built for the worship of the one God--the darkness suddenly was replaced with an intensely bright light, and he became aware of a foreign presence.

The presence told him, "Read!" He replied, in the honest manner for which he was well known, "I am not learned," for he did not know how to read. The presence then squeezed him so tightly that he could not breathe. After releasing him, the presence repeated the command: "Read!" Once again, he said to the presence, "I am not learned."

The presence squeezed him as tightly as before and then released him saying for the third time, "Read!" He said for the third time, "I am not learned." The presence squeezed him nearly to death and then said, "Read, in the name of your Lord, who created; [He] created man of clotted blood. Read, for your Lord is most generous, the one who taught the use of the pen, taught man what he did not know."

The presence then disappeared, leaving him once again in the thick of darkness.

Terrified, he ran out from the cave where this encounter took place and was called from above: "O Muhammad! You are the messenger of God, and I am Gabriel." The prophet (peace be upon him) looked up and saw a man straddling the horizon. The prophet stood frozen in terror as the angel repeated this statement, and then Gabriel disappeared again.

Once the prophet realized the angel had left, he ran home in complete panic, begging his beloved wife to cover him up. These words, relayed by the Angel Gabriel, were the first verses of the Koran to be revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, heralding not only his ministry but also the beginnings of Islam.

This sacred encounter is one of the main reasons Muslims revere the month of Ramadan, which began at sunset Oct. 15.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and during this month Muslims are obliged to fast during daylight hours in accordance with this command in the Koran: "O believers, fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may be conscious of God" (2:183). Fasting is the forgoing of food, drink, marital relations, and other sensual pleasures from sunrise until sunset.

All men and women past the age of puberty are obligated to fast.

Those who are sick or traveling and those who are pregnant or nursing are exempt, but they must make up the days they missed later.

In addition to fasting, Muslims are encouraged to perform special congregational prayers at the mosque, and they frequently gather at sunset to break their fast together. Because the Koran was revealed in the month of Ramadan, Muslims also are encouraged to recite the Koran in its original Arabic text.

The month of Ramadan always is a very happy occasion for me.

Even though the first few days are difficult, having to adjust to not having my daily cup of coffee in the morning, the month is one of enormous blessing and reward from God. The nightly congregational prayers are a wonderful spiritual experience, in which I get to hear the entire Koran recited ever so beautifully.

It warms the heart and soul to worship with hundreds of fellow Muslims every night, and it often reminds me of my recent pilgrimage to Mecca, where I worshiped God with millions of fellow Muslims. Furthermore, I take the opportunity of Ramadan to try to correct my character flaws, increase my acts of spiritual devotion, and improve myself through other spiritual "projects."

At the end of the fast, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr, or Feast of the Breaking of the Fast, where they gather to celebrate the completion of one of the most important acts of devotion in Muslim spiritual life.

It is a holiday I always had looked forward to as a child, and I love to see that same joy in the faces of my children today. Although it is nice to once again drink my coffee during daylight hours, I always feel a bit of sadness at Ramadan's end as the enormous blessing and mercy of that sacred month comes to a close.

It is hoped that, by the end of Ramadan, I will be a better person than I was at the beginning of the month, and that I can carry the spirit of Ramadan throughout the coming year. Indeed, that is the whole purpose of Ramadan.

If I can accomplish this, then the benefit of Ramadan will go way beyond the shedding of a few pounds and being free, if only temporarily, of my daily caffeine fix.

And all I can do is thank God.

Press Sense - 10 / 11 : Focus on Solutions!

* Case 1: Pen Vs Pencil ...

NASA developed a Pen that worked at zero gravity, upside down, under water, in practically any surface including crystal and in a temperature range from below freezing to over 300 deg C. It took NASA One Decade and $ 12 Million to develop this Pen.

... The Russians ... Simply Used A Pencil!

* Case 2: Empty Soap Box ...

The Management of a Japanese Company set about tackling the problem of an "Empty Soap Box" on its Assembly Line. Its Engineers worked hard, post-haste, to devise an X-Ray Machine with High-Resolution Monitors manned by Two People to watch all the Soap Boxes that passed through the line to mak sure they were not empty. ... The Engineers spent a lot of Money, besides Hard and Fast Work! ...

A worker used a strong Industrial Electric Fan to blow on the Assembly Line ... Any Empty Soap Box would be simply blown out of the Line!

I Simply told: I would Congratulate the Russians and would henceforth use a Pencil.

sometimes the end result is not what really matters. its the steps that we take towards solving a problem also that really count.yes we need to always look at a solution and focus on the problem but all is not lost when there is a more obvious solution.there is a lot to be learnt in the way we do things rather than just the end result.

The interviewer is stupid! He doesn't know what "defeatist attitude" means, in the first place. You should have asked him to explain "defeatist attutide" in his own words.

There is no point in reinventing the wheel or spending a decade and $12 million to develop something at this level. It would be sportive of you (if you were the American involved) to congratulate the Russians and acknowledge that their product is better.
