how many of the FHDB members are insomniacs? has anyone here ever experienced chronic insomnia? if yes how did you get out of it?

Hot Milk, Walks, Books, Exercise.

Me not sleep-less, but constant late nights put me out of whack during exam times, and these things help me to get into the sleeping groove again.

As a physician we have plenty opportunity to get medicines

I use Alprazolam 12.5 mg very occasionally/rarely.

But please dont get habituated.

Some times I go to nearby Pub

Have some Old monk or King fisher SOMETIMES BOTH TOGETHER    and sleep with peace.

That s my procedure.

Definitely my husband accompany me always.

any other natural means of overcoming the problem? alcohol sounds very interesting but i don't think it's recommended for people with very little/nil will power/self-control. so are drugs. can you shed some light?

Ive been an off and on insomniac. So has Aq81.

Its hard to get back on track, but I did somehow. I just get to bed earlier than I usually do, toss and turn, and finally fall asleep.

It's a major pain Alexis. That's like the worst thing to go through. Imagine not being able to sleep at nights and get drowsy at the first hint of daylight. One feels tired and worn out but has a hard time getting onself to sleep. Is professional help the only way out?

My uncle who has been an insomniac for quite a while finally consulted a doctor. But nothing was gained. Hes still an insomniac. Now, I dont mean to scare you.......but you should first exhaust all the home-made cures for insomnia.

Did you try sleeping pills? Ive heard thats dangerous and habit forming, so maybe its a good thing you havent.

There was a time 2 yrs ago, where I had insomnia for a straight 2 and a half months. Worst days of my life.

taking the day out after staying up the whole time the previous night is a good tactic. but it seems that that is also temporayr relief even after 24 st. hours some people tend to not get sleep the following night. it's tiring, highly unproductive and very irritating. maybe a pscychiatrist will help?

I don't think I can comment much on this, but then I can never let the opportunity to give some gyan go abegging. :)

There have been times in my life when I have not slept for 96 straight hours and there have been times when I have slept for 18 straight hours (and that on the upper berth of the sleeper class compartment in the month of May during the day) too.

I can sleep anytime, anywhere (thank God for that!) but when there has been work or there have been deadlines to meet I have done without it without feeling the ill-effects of it.

Perhaps insomniacs could try what one of my aunts does. She reads. She simply reads the night out. Great habit, and it keeps her fresh the whole of the next day. The trick lies in not catching those forty-winks in the day time. Just live through the day and sleep only at night. You either get used to it or you start falling asleep. Either way, you don't lose.
Nothing travels faster than light with the possible exception of bad news, which obeys its own special laws.

lucifer : interesting inputs from you. maybe it's just a matter of getting the body accustomed to the natural day cycle, kind of setting the biological clock right. like some wise guy said - it's all in the mind!!!

Ive made a habit of reading in bed too, now that youve brought it up. It does make me sleepy.....sooner or later.

does reading something on the computer screen qualify as reading? because it seems to have no effect whatsoever.

I hope clean conscience doesn't translate into clean bedsheets.

On topic....count sheep.

On a more serious note....never ever try drugs or alcohol. I don't understand how a "doctor" could give this advice on a public forum. In my case, although I love to sleep, it becomes a bit hard as I work the graveyard shift. To force myself to sleep, I generally lie down very comfortably (naked if possible and if I'm not expecting anyone to come over) and read some drab book. That does put me to sleep soon.
