QUERY TO NRI COMPATRIOTS WORKING IN USA AND EUROPE.

by Indian » Sun Oct 17, 2004 4:30 pm

I always have the doubt whether the foreigners accept you totally as part of their society.

See, even in India if you go to different part of the country you feel like second-class citizen. For example, you do not get respect from lowest of other societies even though you work hard for them.

Being this is the fact, what is the real situation over there in US and other European countries?

Do they insult our religion; insult our job-seeking women in daily affairs?

I want to share the main point with you.

HOW DO YOU FEEL OVER THERE?

I am interested about your day-to-day state of affairs.

Do you have adequate respect in the Society? Or else learnt to live with frustrations in white society?

I strongly realize if you are with another society, you have to accept the interests of their society. However, to what extent?

Please narrate the practical facts.

My two cents,

I think you will find differences in everything from food to people's attitude about "the others" in almost every culture on this planet.

The key is balance. Know your true self and rise to defeat those challenges.

With my case, I was teased when I first came here. Although it was in a classroom setting, I do believe that the current society reflects a normal classroom. Of course, I was depressed and out of sorts during that time but it was a positive experience in the long run because that is when one's (and mine) emotions and perceptions etc mature.

As for the people whom you think insult religion and job seeking women, those are the ignorants in the any given country. The ratio of those people to the people who make an impact in someone's life who believe and support and respect others is small and insignificant.

And, there is no place like home, no matter where you are. Nothing can give you that security blanket feeling that home does, but don't let that deter you from pursuing to make your new surroundings happy.

Before I came here, I had the same apprehension.. whether they would be nice or uptight. Only after coming here I realised that Americans in general are among the friendliest people I've ever met. It may not be the same as working in a corporate environment where everybody tries to cut the other one down (it happens in any country anyway).

As far as making comments about religion is concerned, nobody has ever joked or said anything nasty. Many have asked me out of curiosity different things they read about India, some pertaining to religion and others pertaining to culture. If I have heard any racist comments from anybody, its from the afros who always keep saying "white man did this, white man did that", and from desis (and pakis) who make the most crass comments usually based on colour or race, and yeah religion too.

Till now I have never faced a problem but this thing is for sure:Americans are the friendliest people(more friendly than people from our own locality). But this may be due to the fact that I am staying in a University Town and still didnt enter the coporate chain. :D

Some do and some dont. There are some racist redneck type people who hate all races except their own. But a majority of people here in the U.S are very nice and friendly.

Personally, I feel at home here. Ive been here for so long. But when I visit India and come back, I feel like an outsider. But that feeling tapers off when I get busy in the day-to-day routine of life. No one insults my religion, not to my face anyway. They actually show sincere interest in it when I mention Im Muslim. Women arent insulted here, why would they be?

"In Rome do as the Romans do". Sure, there are some things you have to do because its the norm here. But you definitely dont have to lose your individuality. America is a country that is very accepting and tolerant. You can practice your own religion without fear of ridicule or danger.

Yes, we get adequate respect.

I have been in the UK for 7 years and have never faced any problems. People here are very friendly, open and helpful. They are not nosey like the folk backhome for sure :D

To be honest, my experience here has been much more pleasant that in Hyd in all walks of life. sad but true :( Doesn't mean I have shifted loyalties. Would love to go back to homeland. Only this time I know how to deal with people!!! Khabar daar :D

All I can say is I have lived with the Brits for long enough (7years OMG!)to contradict your views. I have moved around UK as well and hence have met people from different regions too.

Perhaps Brits are misunderstood. Give them goras a chance. They are not bad at all but Indians are the best ofcourse

Maybe she didn't like the amount of hair on you!
Things are supposed to happen the way they happen. And the reason they happen the way the happen is because you try to make them happen in a certain way and may or may not be succesful.

ya, latinos are very nice people, kiwis.... ya, they are happy people. and i d say aussies will be the closest to hyderabadis, no where in the world (the known world) would u find people as laaait as hyderabadi s and aussies.

With Brits, i have always had a tough time, but i dont think Brit chicks are big heads (except for my workmate). they are pretty easy pickups. but hey, the only ones i have met were backpackers.

about the Yanks, i am not really sure as it be just as diverse as the subcontinent. but the people i have met and known, they have a really fast pace of life, which is a strict taboo for me.

Indian: Teasing is terrible, I will agree but the teasing was in elementary and middle school level. All kids are knowingly/unknowingly. You don't have to feel sorry for me, I was and still am quite capable of taking care of myself. :!:
