that reminds me:

Why is the quality of the so-called comedies in indian films so pathetic? in most indian films (any language) comedy usually means: 1) screaming 2) making faces 3) hamming 4) slapping and kicking 5) making fun of diabilities 6) childish slapstick like throwing cakes on each other.

the classy indian comedies are few n far in between. the best ones i have seen are:

Hindi:Hera Pheri (new), Andaz Apna Apna, Golmaal, Naram Garam, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Chupke Chupke, Choti Si Baat, Dulhe Raja

Tamil:

Michael Madan Kamarajan, Tenali, Singaravelan, Avvai Shanmugi, Panchatantram (no coincidence that all above are Kamalhassan films...he's a class act in comedy). When dubbed in Telugu these films lost abt 50% of their comedy coz of bad translation of jokes and lack of equivalent idioms.

Telugu:

a few Rajendraprasad movies from late 80s to early 90s. dont remember any of the titles except for "Aha! Na Pellanta" and "April 1 Vidudala"

Kannada:

Anant Nag films in the "Ganesha" series and "Golmaal" series (few of them are remakes of Rajendraprasad's Telugu films)

if i've forgotten any comedy classics, plz add them here...

Bollywood is not running out of jokes. It is the commercialisation of commercial cinema :? :D. The comedy is gettingrepetitive because the directors or story writers just want to make the film and reel in the money bcuz they know people will flock the theatres to watch a comedy. But, some directors take their comedy 'seriously', and their work shows.

GOD!!! That was a superb list. i can only add a few. These are fun all the same:

Pushpak (The silent movie feat. Kamal Hasan), Love Ke Liye Kuchh bhi Karega (it was nice actually), Daud (Had one of the funniest comic sequences in recent times), Chameli Ki Shaadi, Sajan Chale Sasuraal,...

shit man! how did i forget to include Pushpak and Chameli Ki Shaadi....???????

personally i found Daud very irritating, silly n boring....

"Love KLKB Karega" was good but its original was much better: a film i forgot to include in the Telugu list: "Money" (its sequel "Money Money" was not as funny)

Will then just have to watch Money, bcuz LKLKBK was quite fun.

Daud was a light movie, quite funny. Problem with Daud was that it was advertised as an action film, and it really fails at action.

Coolio! Now I know which movies to look for. I would add Hungama to the list. Been a while but remember enjoying it. Liked Munnabhai MBBS too.

Hungama's not bad at all, but i dont think its belongs to any 'All time Great' list

a very good light hearted entertainer, but it definitely is not a comedy in sense that the viewer is not left laffing till tears flow or sides ache...u get wat i mean?

My additions...

Chupke Chupke, Chalti ka naam gaadi, Half ticket, Namak-Halaal & Amar Akbar Anthony (though these two had more than just comedy, the comedy track still rocked), Chitchor, Satte-Pe-Satta & dunno how everyone missed this - Angoor.

Yeah Madhoshi was a pretty good movie.......but this thread is about comedies. Why'd you drag this one in the middle?

Bollywood doesnt know what comedy is.

Old Hindi (Johny walker et al) and telugu movies (Ramana reddy, Relangi) had good comedy.

In my opinion nothing can beat telugu comedy movies. One has to watch

Manasantha nuvve, Manmadhudu, Nuvvu Naaku Nacchav, Kabaddi kabaddi (rib-tickling adiult comedy) to know what comedy is.

Anyone seen Kabaddi kabaddi?

oh my! how did i miss these two.......plus Padosan!

most other Kishore Kumar comedies are very entertaining, but IMO, very childish too, thats why i left them out in my list.

those days there were good dialog oriented 'intelligent' comedies. sadly these days most comedies rely upon the 6 points i mentioned before. u can also add the veteran Nagesh to the list...his was a special brand of spontaneous humour! in tamil these days Vivek is excellent in the Nagesh school of spontaneous comedy. they dont follow the script and instead improvise their own dialogs n jokes to great effect!
Mayavi Morpheus wrote:Kabaddi kabaddi (rib-tickling adiult comedy)
havent heard of that, but i've seen Bachelors......sick adult jokes but very entertaining.

Seriously, the funniest scene IMO, in hindi movies would be the climax of Andaz Apna Apna. hilarious dialogues...especially from Paresh Rawal.

Money is a remake of a hollywood movie, forgot its name. Danny devito (?) plays paresh rawals role.

Among Hindi comedies, Do aur Do paanch has some good comedy.

And telugu movies, Chiranjeevis 'Chantiabbai' (All jokes copied from Pink Panther) and Venu's(?) second move... forgot its name... has good comedy, copied from Life is beautiful. 'Allari' Naresh's  Totti gang is reasonably good but the original Saving Silverman is hilarious.
