My best friend is a Taiwanese, and she learnt most of her English after coming to the US. I also have many Chinese friends who starting learning every word of English after landing in the US. They speak English the way they are taught in the English 101 language class in their American university, and they wouldn't have any need to fake it.

My employer was amused by the way other Indians used to speak to him with an exaggerated fake accent. He asked me a few times why they had to struggle and speak differently when they talk to a white person. And oh, he'd introduce me to others by saying "Meet A*, he's the only one who speaks British English".

Anyway, this reminds me of this guy i met last year. he came from vishkapatnam to Sydney to work on his master s degree. i met him accidently, and i was really to see him have a very very strong yankee accent. At that point of time i did nt know where he was from, by his accent, i assumed that he was from the states, in the due course of the converation we had, i asked him as to which part of the states he was from and he gave me the biggest surprise of my life. He said to me that he s never been to the states before.

that was a shocker. well, out of curiousity, i asked him as to how he got the sccent to whcch he replied, hollywood.

thats when i realised the influence of hollywood. The new religion.

Hey, my professor used to refer to me as the Indian guy who speaks British English, not as the guy who speaks with a British accent :)

I guess he observed that the other Indian guys were putting on an unreal American accent and were trying to impress him by using their newly learnt American teenage slangs. Obviously he was pissed when he expected a simple reply to some of his questions.

And, I've been speaking only English all my life; so, many people don't believe I am from Hyderabad.

There's another Hyderabadi guy I know in my former university. While others used to fake American accents while speaking with Americans, this guy went one step further. He would put on a fake Chinese accent while speaking with our Chinese classmates. 8)

Seriously! I would actually wait for their project meetings in the lab so that I could sit nearby and watch this guy talk to his Chinese project partners. :D

Actually makes a lot of sense.

Or maybe it is the other way round; if you know someone nice enough, you unwittingly change to their style.

Accent

by San » Thu Oct 21, 2004 1:00 pm

Wonder if faking accents is about feeling inferior? Being identified as a creature from developing world as opposed to the developed & powerful & etc etc etc

Thinking about it Indian accent is made fun of (British TV)but other Asian countries seem to get away...why o why is that :?

well, if you stay in a place long enough it's natural that you'll pick up the accent, even if just to make yourself understood. if i went around over here talking like i do back home nobody would understand me.

as for the Brits making fun of Indian accents, they do that to everyone, Chinese, Pakistani, Australian, Japanese, Irish, etc.

Exaktly! I used to sometimes move around with the northie peeple (Delhi, J&k) in college, and i picked up some of their mannerisms, so that when I spoke to a northie, my accent and some words changed like saying 'boliyo' instead of 'bol do', and using a lot more Urdu, etc, etc.
