BANGALORE: A mysterious figure peeping on women in a hospital ward has given them sleepless nights for the past few days. The menace has created such a fear among patients at the Haji Sir Ismail Sait Ghosha Hospital in Shivajinagar that the management now demands a police outpost after the women raised a hue and cry.
According to the patients and their attenders in the post operative ward (No. 23) where half a dozen newborn babies are being nursed, a black figure began peeping in through the ventilators inside the ward on Tuesday night.
The ‘Peeping Tom’ reappeared on Thursday and Friday nights even as the women screamed out of shock. Three of them who claimed to have seen the figure told this that they fear it was someone who came to steal their babies.
When it made a reappearance late on Sunday night, the patients called their relatives at home for help as there were only two ‘unskilled’ watchmen to guard the hospital.
According to the men, they chased the intruder who jumped onto the adjacent building where a Congress office is located. But the culprit, a teenager with oil smeared on his face, gave them the slip.
A complaint has been lodged with the Commercial Street police, who has assured to post a constable in the hospital for the time being.
On Monday, the hospital authorities meshed the open ventilators and wrote letters to the health department asking for security. Hospital Superintendent Dr. Kalyani has also written to the City Police Commissioner to grant an outpost in the hospital. The request had been made by her predecessors.
Though authorities denied any case of babies being stolen from the hospital, a senior police officer said nearly 10 years ago, a purda-clad woman had walked out with a baby boy, only to be caught by the police within hours
