internet blues

by abraham lincoln » Sat Oct 02, 2004 10:46 pm

My story of buying a system(computer) thus continues.

Few days back I purchased a excellent computer system with 256 dd ram, 80 gb hdd, etc etc

But alas I could not select a good internet service provider.

Initially I was trying for bsnl connection.

Suddenly somehow I ended in buying a reliance data cable. Somebody told me that USB port cables are good for internet. But alas I searched the whole city to buy reliance USB data cable with total failure. Finally I connected a seriel port to my computer.

Believe me the speed is worse than the traditional snail mail.

Why this happens?

Some areas in the city has the facility of internet through cables. Kindly share your experiences regarding the speed .

I have another doubt. What is quick time. What are the easiest steps to download that in to my system. I am totally depressed now because I am unable to see the multimedia elements in my encyclopedia britannica .

Somebody please advise me which approach for internet is best as of now.

A poor soul.

If you have a Airtel GPRS phone you can connect it to your computer and use it for only Rs.500/-.I think the speed is good.If you want a proper cable,I use Beam Cable, its exellent, umlimited download(of course you can always by pass this using spy software in any other cable operator too),good speed, etc.Of course there is also Hataway, but I heard its really irritating.Well Beam and Hataway have some kind of deal,Beam operates in some parts of Hyd and Hataway in the other.

If you want to use Dial Up,I sugest you use Satyam or BSNL.When I last used dial up from Satyam I used to get a good speed of 45Kbps,which I didnt get from any other ISP. :D

Sorry I forgot to add this. You can always get quicktime from Digit CD's.An issue is Rs.100.They give a LOT of freeware which are usefull. If you want just quicktime, borrow the CD from one of your friends,I am sure many people read the magazine.Caution:They give quicktime sometimes and sometimes they dont,so check the back of the magazine for details,AFAIK they it give every month, but just in case check and buy. :D

My parents used to connect to the Internet with their Reliance India Mobile mobile phone. I saw it in action earlier this year when I was in India.. its very fast compared to regular landline dialup. You connect the mobile phone to the computer via cable. The rates are 40 paise per minute, but its really worth it.

Here in the US, I sometimes use my T-Mobile service provider to connect to GPRS free of cost using Bluetooth on my Sony Ericsson T610, and I get connected at 115kbps. I don't really need it because I have cable Internet, I do it for fun.. Anyway, T-Mobile has so many flaws in its system.. I don't have to sign up for the $29.99 a month wireless internet.. Maybe you can do something like that with your mobile phone. I'm sure Indian phone providers should have loopholes somewhere ;)

T-Zones in technical terms refers to the T-Zones WAP homepage using T-Mobile. You pay only for downloading stuff from T-Zones homepage.. while you can browse other WAP pages for *FREE* without paying the $4.99 or the grandfathered $2.99 account which you currently have.

To use your T610 as a wireless modem, you have to either use Bluetooth or Infrared to establish a connection. I use Bluetooth. After you install your Bluetooth adapter, you find that the adapter is listed as one of the modems on your computer.. on one of the COM ports. Then dial *99***1 to connect to the Internet. If *99***1 does not work, substitute the 1 for your CID number.

The T-Mobile buggers have discovered it and plugged the loophole last month, so you probably cannot connect to the free GPRS from *all* places in the US, but I can still connect occasionally. I am also not able to access WAP pages now, but can use my mail client (POP and SMTP) free of charge - just make sure you don't use T-Mobile's default settings or else you'll get a really huge bill :)

To remove T-Mobile's hardwired settings, I unbranded my T610 and removed all of T-Zones settings (GPRS and MMS). Then I put my own settings which were more or less a combination of T-Zones and the original Sony Ericsson settings..

Which part of the US are you from?

KS? I was in KSU earlier.. Don't try any manipulations through AT&T.. They charged a subscriber $3,500 for WAP charges when he tried to do the same thing :?

The settings on my T610 are as follows:

APN : wap.voicestream.com

use id : <none>

password : <none>

IP address : <none>

DNS : <none>

Set all compression options to "true", or else you'll get a horrible speed.

In your WAP profiles, set the IP address to 216.155.165.50 and in Advanced, change your homepage to anything else you want. If it refuses to change the homepage, you would need to unbrand your cell phone first.
