calling all perl freaks!!

by Karthik » Mon Sep 27, 2004 4:53 pm

Hi guys!

I have been working in Perl for more than one year now and am completely facinated by the brilliance of the same.

Wld like to know how many in Hyd are actually Perl buffs like me? If the number is quite decent, then I am seriously thinking of starting a perl discussion forum.

Any takers?

Perl is a scripting language used extensively on the web. That's all I know about it.

Thats right...Perl is a scripting language...but it is ideally suited for many activities other than web pages....it is excellent for parsing data from any files....the one feature "regular expressions" of Perl makes it suitable for practically doing anything with the textual inputs.

Haan.

There was a lot of Hullaballu over PERL (just like with Delphi!). But i dont think it has quite lived up to the Hype. Or has it?

Well Karthik....used to bea heavy into programming till around 8 years ago...the last I touched was C++. And you know what an 8 year hiatus from the field means.

Have just kept in touch with the developments ever since through reports on the web, magazines etc. Anyways....wait a while and you should see some more people responding to this. We do have a few geeks around.

By the way, what do you do? are you studying or working? Better still, why don't you introduce yourself for the benefit of other DBites?

No...I think Perl has quite lived upto its expectations...in fact it might have surpassed....I know of some firms that initially planned to migrate its web system to JSP but then had to revert back to Perl due to varied reasons.

True....AFAIK, PERL hasn't really lived upto its promise in terms of user base. Delphi was a good product...but it was effed bigtime by Powerbuilder, which was superior and which was in turn, effed by Larry Ellison.

Besides the point....Larry Ellison rocks. He's the man.

Have tried my hands at making some girlfriends but failed miserably (BTW I don't talk much abt programming to girls lest they may assume that I am *only* a nerd)

Anything else that u wanna know abt me?

Would like to make friends with u guys...don't have much friends here.

BTW here is a PJ:

Why was uncle always late than aunty to office?

A: Because there is no uncle-clockwise as compared to a(u)nti-clockwise.

Yeah I've been working on and off with Perl for 7 years.. and its my favourite programming language :) Nothing comes close to it.. I just love the regex part, not to mention its other rich features like CGI... You are still a kid to Perl I guess 8)
