Teach me Telugu.

by Kenny » Sat Sep 18, 2004 12:52 pm

Just read HP's naaku telugu raadhu on another thread; that's how I thought of this.

Anyway... teach me telugu.

Ironical, isn't it that most people in the capital of gult land do not know the language? Me is one of them, too. Guess, that is the trait of a true-blue Hyderabadi - knows Hindi, Hinglish, Urdu, Hyderabadi Hindi but not Telugu! :?

Would totally agree with the 'A typical Hyderabadi knows Hindi, and English but not Telugu' line......sab chalta hai yahan, thats probably why.

For instance if u r in Chennai, u'll be lost if u didn't know Tamil.....Blore's slightly better off in that respect.

From an outsider's point of view Hyd's more inviting as far as the language issue is concerned but for lots of people like me (who've lived here for a little over 20 years) its embarassing not to be able to carry off a decent conversation in telugu! Am trying to learn the language and was told that it sounds 'cute' when I spoke and I went "Oh oh, Thats not how it should be!"

U have one more willing student in this virtual class....ha!
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you are right.

The rule to start learning a language is by learning the BAD words. CAD has already given you a good start.. although cryptic!

I will give you a few.... and when to use them!

If you are pissed off with some one you say.. Dengayee :x == F*** off! :x

If you want to say to someone not to act smart.. you say.. "Box baddaal aipotadi... Jagarata! :x " == "....... :? " I cant translate this.. anyone?

More later!

rather add "ulu" than "u", like computerulu, roadulu, sounds better that way :D

Honestly... it takes a lot to learn good telegu. But if you know Sanskrit or advanced Hindi. You can pick up telegu preety easily. Telegu is sanskrit in many ways. Of all the south languages, I think telegu has more of sanskrit in it than any other language.

Also, there are many flavours of telegu.. eash have a distinct slang and a way of speaking it. From that you can identify a person to belong to a certain region. Me being from Hyderabad I speak more of street telugu... For example. If somebody is bugging me. I would say, "Yaad keli wastar ainto bhai.. :x pareshan pareshan chestunnaru..."

I leanrt my telegu from watching movies (I am a big fan of KOTA.. he is so cool) and just interacting with common folk in Hyderabad. I had no formal training or education. But I guess being with telugu folk in Engg college at Osmania Univ. Campus does leave its mark on you.

My advice try watching movies with English subtitles. That helps! Thats how I started, only I had my friends as interpretors.

I can say it is one of the sweetest languages. :D

all South Indian languages except Tamil, are derived from sanskrit, so the influence of sanksrit words on Telugu as well as Kannada n Malayalam is quite heavy. thats makes these languages easy to understand n speak for non-natives. this also makes Tamil quite difficult for non-tamils.
asli_badmash wrote:I leanrt my telegu from watching movies
i too learnt spoken telugu that way, much before i learnt reading n writing it. i also learnt spoken kannada very fast via movies n kannada Doordarshan when i stayed in karnataka for 3 years. i think this is the best way to pick up any language.
asli_badmash wrote:I guess being with telugu folk in Engg college at Osmania Univ. Campus does leave its mark on you.
sadly, the crowd i grew up with were largely non-telugu, so even my telugu friends prefer to speak hindi or english. thats why i cannot speak telugu as confidently or rapidly as i can speak hindi or english, tho i can read n write it quite well.

thats good but better be careful initially...many friends wud teach vulgar words pretending its proper n 'decent' words! :D

Me too.. I cant speak telugu fluently.. While talking with some one in telegu; I search for words to express my emotions and them quickly change over either to English or Hindi.

That already happened! But I was cautious enough to try it till I found out what it actually means.

Let me tell you an incident.. My ex-girlfriend was Hyderabadi-Telegu. One day.. while I was still learning to speak telegu.. I thought I would say something nice to her.. I thought I would say.. "I would keep you in my heart and take care of you". The obvious converison would have been... "ninu gunda lo petokonu chusukuntano :D"...

and I missed the "N" when I said GUNDA.  major screw up! she laughed like hell though.
