You are confusing warm-up and exercise, SS.

Even kite flyers need to stand in the sun of long times. It is not about standing in the sun or running here and there. If I devote a mojor part of my day to learning something, then it is natural to expect that it should make me progress in proportion to the time I spend.

Akhil, I agree that MA people do exercises, but they are only doing it to make them EVEN more strong. I have been doing serious MA (3 hours everyday) for thepast 2 years. Believe me, if I did not do a single push-up, it would not matter. I would just have to do a more punches to make up. I used to practice at a ground where Vidarbha's team for handball, boxing, fencing and ladies cricket used to practice. So I also know what people in different sports do as part of warm-up and fitness.

Akhil and SS, exercise, warmup, etc, is not part of cricket per se. And, how many cricketers do you think will exercise for an hour before they play? Just the ones who are under professional coaching, no more.

And why am I whining about it? It is because I look around at my fellow Indians and they are all pathetic in terms of their fitness. Most have some fitness problem or the other. Ask them what they do for exercise, they will say, "Oh I play Cricket regularly.". Which is why I am continiously saying that people should not confuse cricket with fitness.

playing cricket everyday will make u fit.

i think u contradicted ur own point in the above post by saying that ppl. playing other sports wld. not exercise if they had the choice as it wld. be covered by someother part of the sport.

and the guys who play cricket 'regularly' and yet dont stay fit, i am, sure play it once in a while. i stopped playing regular cricket abt. 2 yrs back. and today i have a nice spare tyre arnd. my waist.

cricket gives ur full body exercise for as long as u r on the field (at least 3 hrs) + it demands a lot of concentration becoz of the noise in the stadium...which other sport requires u to do all this at the same time?

Isn't it the same for all the other sports???

I have played football matches (60 min matches) and 20-over cricket matches and believe me the cricket match was much-much more draining than the football matches. Nobody can say that a footballer or rugby player has more stamina than a cricket player. Cricket requires as much as energy, if not more, as any of these sports

Sad about your tummy. Start playing then, no?

You keep repeating that Cricket makes people fit, and I have no problem with that. But Cricket is not the game for staying fit. It is just a hobby, and the increase in stamina and fitness is very less compared to ther games.

I just want to point out to my fellow Indians that Cricket is not the big deal they make it to be. If they pursued(played) Hockey fr'instance, they would get much better advantage out of the time they spend.

Cricket may require the same amount of energy, but it is spread over 6 hours, while a hockey player does the same thing in 1 hour. Sort of like the difference between a marathon and a 400m race.

Well, suppose a murderer were to chase you, who would you prefer to be? The National Walkathon champion? The Chess Champion? The most devastating batsman?

Will you explain to me what advantage does cricket specifically give in the above scenario?

For sure, a Hockey player would outrun him. For a cricketer to outrun him, it would depend on the amount of exercise THAT PARTICULAR cricketer did.

A Wrestler, Boxer or MArtist could beat up the murderer. AND they are as fit as a cricketer IN ADDITION to being able to defend themselves.

ne game wld. keep u fit as long as u keep playing it. r u saying that if a karate player stopped practicing for a year he wld. still remain equally fit.?

blaming cricket for not equipping ppl. to do self defence is not rite dont u think? and i wonder what a hockey player or a foot ball player wld. do in that case.

and what if the murderer and the person being chased are both boxers and MAs? who`ll win in that case?....

No it would not. Any Hockey player or Football player or Runner could outrun him because Swimming, Running, Basketball, Football, etc are sports in which the prime activity is hard running and not standing around. So if a person is a Hockey player then it would guarantee that he could outrun the murderer or whatever. Not so for a Cricket player.

and what if the murderer and the person being chased are both boxers and MAs? who`ll win in that case?....

;-) That would be hard to call! This is a favourite topic on any MA board: Which MA would win, or who would win in the above scenario.

As far as self defence situations go, its a hit-or-miss thing. Monica Seles, and a famed Russion swimmer (cant recall his name. His nick was The Human Submarine) both got stabbed, which effectively ended their respective careers.

The self-defence thing is just an example of MA, a sport which atleast helps you in defending yourself, or Hockey and Football which tremendrously increase stamina, much more than Cricket, or dancing which gives you bragging rights and gives you a creative outlet.

For your question of what a football player or Hockey player would do, they could atleast be counted on to be able to run faster and farther than the murderer or whatever. It was anyway just an example and needs to be treated as such.

Btw, have you seen the tummies and thighs of, for ex, football players? They are rock solid, and any sane person would think long and har about quarelling with them. They could neway beat just about any person without any need for Martial Arts. Can you say the same about Cricketers?

The only peeps I respect for being fit are Kapil Dev and Azhar; the current lot is nothing compared to Robin, Jaddu, Azzu and Kapil. Now those were FIT people!

well if the crickter in concern here is some one just to fill gaps in the field then i wld. have agreed with u.

ya they wld. but arent we talikng abt. sports that keep u fit?? i dont know why cricket wldnt. qualify as one.
in a worst case scenario ne thing cld. happen. if u tell me that a footballer has a better chance of surviving than a cricketer then i dont think it true. ne way if foot ball kept u so fit then i dont understand why the footballers keep getting injured every now and then.
Sharjeel wrote: They could neway beat just about any person without any need for Martial Arts. Can you say the same about Cricketers?

this indian team is more fitter than ne other indian team of the past. the injuries are a result of over playing.

The footballers get injured because they are playing at the absolute limit of their capacity and not just standing around.

I conede that cricket does keep people fit (albiet to a very less extent than Almost any game), but my argument has never been that. The point is that alongwith keeping a person very fit, a sport should also teach him some good thing, or atleast be short so that it does not waste a lot of time.

Rugby, Football, etc do not teach anything but makes him FIGHTING FIT and toughens up the body.

MA will make a person fit and teach him self defence

Tennis, squash, Badminton will exponentially increase the stamina and concentration.

Swimming is an invaluable survoival skill and an exercise.

Gymnastics, Dancing are fun things to do and are major exercises.

Could you include Cricket in the above list? NO. Case Closed.

Jogging and Aerobics are closer to what Cricket does in theory, but they finish in an hour with the same results.

of course. sports like cricket...golf etc. do not come in the above category. they have been more of leasure sports than nething else. but off late cricket has become more and more demanding as far as fitness is concerned. with more cricket being played the fitness level will only go up.
