as far as giving her equal status in concerened I dont think its needed as long as u dont over work them or abuse them.
u pay them for what they do and thats it.

why get so senti?

Everybody is equal.

You remind me of the student of Vedanta who misinterpreted "Aham Brahmasmi" as "I'm the creator and the sole master". The constitution gives us the right to equality...but that doesn't mean that a matriculate is equaivalent to a PhD. when it comes to a college lecturer's position. I consider my domestic help my equal as she is also a human being. I don't overwork her or underpay her.

DQ wrote:Is that why you hire them to wash your dishes ? Hygiene !!

Yes...that's why I hire them. I make it a point to ensure that they've washed my utensils properly. Washing them properly removes all chances of contamination. But I cannot guarantee the same thing when the domestic help sits down to eat with me.

DQ wrote:So ?
If you purport that allowing her to use your fridge was equality, then it was upto her to use the water the way she wanted.

If not, you were allowing some one to infringe on your right, you have the right to refuse the muncipal cleaner a right of entry into your house.

I'm not boasting of anything here...and its not a question of someone infringing on my right. My point is that...inko kandhe be bithao...to kaan mein mootte hain.

Why not ?

Looks like the blog and post is hurting your ego.

Why not??? Because I've earned whatever I can afford today due to hard work and determination. My father was no better than the people you are sympathising with. He studied through school and college on borrowed books. His first two years salary went into repaying family debts. He paid through his nose to educate me. What has my domestic help done in that direction?

Before you talk about them being deprived and stuff....here's some news. I teach 2 underprevileged kids. I spend 2-3 hours of my time every week with the kids. I fight with their parents to make them send the kids to school regularly, which they don't. Now, the father of the kids works as a security guard. The mother works as domestic help in 10 households, earning a total of more than 4000 bucks a month. Together, the two earn more than what I earned when I came to Hyderabad. And they still want the kids to work and help the mother out. What do you have to say to this?

And yeah, I've never read your blog and have no wish to waste my time on something as superflous as that. I know my responsibilities and I'm true to my heart that I carry them well.

DQ wrote:My equal ???
Fellow human being, (not drinking in the same container they drink water in, not allowing them to sit at the same level you sit at, either stand or sit on the floor, !!!! Fellow Human being)

The reason for this, as mentioned above, is not equality...but hygiene.

DQ wrote:What respect.
Hopelessely underpaying them ?

I pay the maid enough. I've already posted the figures above. She makes close to a thousand bucks just from my place and my landlords'. And she has 8 more households. She starts at 7 am and is done with her work by noon. And 4000+ for a 5 hour job is not considered underpaid even in industries like IT, which is among the highest payers today.

And pray tell me, does paying money amount to giving respect?

DQ wrote:Showing them that they cannot eat and drink in the same utensil.
Benefitting from their current status, overworking them. Abusing them as you will.
Not giving them a chance to develop.

I've answered all that above. I request you not to repeat the same points again and again. This would serve no purpose other than making your post look looooonnnnnggggg. And that's nothing to be proud of.

DQ wrote:100s of houses where the household help has been a house hold help from 2 to 3 generations. Is thsi not careful exploitation by the employers.

Now what do you want? Abolition of the domestic help class itself?

You are a great man DQ, I appreciate you kind heartedness, but do ask your wife (that is if your married) before you share your bed and bedroom with a kaamwaali..... no, ask the kaamwaali first. Just a friendly advice.

well... generally ppl have only one bed in their bedroom and that is for them to sleep. So, if a Kaamwaali wants to sleep on that bed, she should share the bed cos the owner/master/employer cannot and should not sleep on floor, as it amounts to inequality and discrimination - owner on floor and kaamwaali on bed.

By the way, I got a question. Should a kaamwaali be treated like a wife? I mean, for equality sake.
May the Fries be with you!

Equality theory says that kaamwaali shld be treated like house wife and not the other way.

Anyway, most men treat their wives as Kaamwaalis?

TOI News article.

Campaign on child rights from tomorrow [/size]

Hyderabad: A campaign to create awareness about child labour called, 'Fly Kites for Child Rights' will be organised on January 8 and 9 at People's Plaza, Necklace Road.

The campaign which aims to spread awareness about domestic child labour among the citizens will be organised by the district administration in collaboration with the NGO, Hyderabad Council for Human Welfare.

In a statement on Thursday, district collector, Arvind Kumar said that the district administration has allotted funds for starting residential and non-residential bridge schools for children who have been working as labourers in houses and industries. This will be done in collaboration with the school education department, he said. "Already, we have identified the 4,000 child labourers to be enrolled," Arvind Kumar added.

Well HP, your kaamwali makes as much as what a friend of mine makes in a month, and he works 6 hrs a day for 6 days a week. Guess what he works as ?

He is a doctor (m.b.,b.s) from a top ranked medical college in india. There was also a government offer in A.P about a few years ago which offered to pay Rs.50 a day as daily wages to doctors on contract basis.

That shows we got equality, doesnt it 'DQ'?

He must be the greatest DUD,

A guy who cannot put his education to use.

Cannot capitlise on the oppurtunities he has. m.b.b.s something that he got to study by choice, something that he could afford. And what a waste!!! He could have accepted that 50 bucks and served the community atleast.

On the other hand, if this poor household help does not work from as early as 5 years putting in a minimum of 18hrs a day. Mind you no holidays day in and day out. Then they can very well starve to death.

What was it words --- actions etc etc. !!! Huh.

My household help works from 7am till maybe a maximum of 1pm. That's 6 hours a day. Less than what a lot of people I know put up. She is free to take a day off provided she informs us atleast the previous day. Compare this with some offices where you need to apply for leave atleast a week in advance. And the worst part is....they have no intention of getting their kids out of the profession. In my maid's husband's words..."Sahab...padh likhke kaunsa ye bahut kama lene waali hai. Is dhandhe mein jitna paise aayega..utna usko kahin pe bhi nahi milega. Aur waise bhi ye saara paisa iski hi shaadi mein kaam aayega na." I had absolutely no answer to this.

Not only can this (m.b.bs) not help himself,

but also refuses to assist the community by accepting the Rs 50 a day. Huh.

Whats your question. You are portraying exactly what I want to say.

Appears you have not read the blog kaamwali.

Where a mother tries to get her daughters employed ASAP so that they can help themselves and save for their marriages.

She does not even comprehend sending them to school as she knows that it will not help them and that is reality my friend.

I guess working in a hospital means serving the community.

DQ, i have a sincere suggestion for you. Read what is written on the post and do not assume the inner meanings of the posts coz most of them are in plain and simple english.

And you conviently forgot about the issue of sustainance @ rs.50 per day. Anyway i guess its easy for you to talk about that when its not you who is in the situation. Try this , live one month on 1500 bucks among the same company you are in and then talk about it. and dont use any family inheritance.:).

Look buddy its your friends choice.

He chose to study. He chose to become a doctor, now if he cannot cash in on his qualification no one can do anything about it.

A sweeper is a sweeper because, that is what he had to do when he was maybe 4 or 5 yrs old to feed himself, going to school, getting an education was not an option at all!!

Your friend is being exploited of his own free will and choice. A house hold maid is being exploited for one meal a day since early childhood did you get it now??????
