* Medicos' Moving Gesture


The dead cannot be brought back to life, but concrete help could be extended to their dear ones left behind. More so, when the deceased were their only ray of hope. Medicos of Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad, shocked by the tragic end of three of their juniors in a ghastly road accident on the Tank Bund, have come to the aid of the latter's family members by mobilising support from all quarters.

Their efforts to help the families of G. Ashok, son of a beedi worker in Mandamarri of Adilabad district, G. Sampath, whose father is a petty businessman in Choppadandi of Karimnagar district, and D. Chaitanya, son of a Karimnagar-based doctor, have had the Labour Minister, N. Narasimha Reddy, and the Commercial Taxes Minister, Vijayarama Rao, moved.



Ministers' Promise

At a condolence meeting here on Tuesday, the Ministers promised financial assistance to members of the bereaved families from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. They also promised to get aid from their legislative colleagues in Karimnagar and Adilabad districts from where the deceased hailed. They also went on to make modest personal contributions to them.

Moved by the untimely and unnatural deaths, the Junior Doctors' Association promised to contribute a sum of Rs. 1 lakh while the Government Doctors' Association also appealed to its members to donate liberally for the cause.



Appeal to Government



Speakers at the meeting also appealed to the Government to come to the rescue of poor students to enable them to complete medical education.

* “Non-Stink” Gift to Lalu!

Here is a “Non-Stink” Gift to Lalu from Sajjan Rao, an Inventor from Shimoga in Karnataka. Rao has designed and patented an Automatic Device which collects Night Soil while a Train stands still on the Platform and then throws away the Waste outside Station Limits. The Device is a steel plate that can be attached to the pipe that drains out Night Soil from Toilets in Railway Bogies. The Bowl has a capacity to carry 30 Litres of Night Soil. High quality is used which is light but strong. Once fitted to the Toilet, the Device is Maintenance-Free. * Srisailam Inflows





HYDERABAD, AUG. 11 The Srisailam project has made an impressive improvement in its storage with heavy inflows still continuing from Alamatti.



The reservoir swelled up to 860 ft by Wednesday and it is expected to go up further. At this level, a quantity of 146 tmcft is available in the dam. Out of this, nearly 100 tmcft is the live storage which can be drawn out and utilised.



Heavy inflows are still reaching the project and on Wednesday, it was of the order of 1.93 lakh cusecs. The Alamatti system is letting out 1.97 cusecs. The improved storage has rekindled the hopes of farmers and electricity authorities in the State and releases from the project are eagerly awaited.



Meanwhile, hydel stations based on Srisailam project are likely to resume generation activity from Thursday, according to an official of the APGenco.

Roses are Red, and now come in blue



Scientists' efforts to create the world's first blue rose have, well, come up roses.



A model shows off the world's first blue roses -- long thought impossible to create -- during a media preview in Tokyo.



Distiller and beverage manufacturer Suntory Ltd. said Wednesday it has developed the world's first blue roses with Australian firm Florigene Ltd.



Suntory officials said researchers extracted the gene that produces blue pigment in pansies and activated it inside the roses.



There are already "bluish" roses on the market, but these flowers were created through crossbreeding and cannot be called true blue, according to Suntory. The gene of the enzyme that produces the blue pigment, delphinidin, is not found in rose petals to begin with.



Thanks to biotechnology, the petals of Suntory's blue roses contain nearly 100 percent of the blue pigment, it said.



Suntory and Florigene, which is 98.5 percent Suntory-owned, bred a blue carnation using the same basic technology in 1995.



The carnations were marketed in Japan, North America and Australia under the brand Moondust, according to the firm.

* "Stagnant" Hyderabad ...




HYDERABAD, AUG. 19. A peculiar problem this. First, the civic authorities suggest a pipeline from the Housing Board Colony at Old Malakpet, cutting across New Shanker Nagar to divert rainwater and sewerage into the Musi. Next, the residents of HB Colony suggested that the new road laid at Shanker Nagar, which was at a higher level than the road through their colony, be remodelled as rainwater and sewerage was getting stagnated in front of their houses. Months later, both the pipeline and the suggestion remain on paper.



`MCH indifferent'

With no help from the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad, the vexed residents of HB Colony, who remain indoors by sunset to escape mosquitoes, now literally pray that there should be no rain.



Water gets stagnated between block No.5 and block No.8 of HB Colony, as the existing road is lower. Interestingly, it is a mere row of granite stones that act as a boundary between HB Colony and Shanker Nagar. But both places have a different set of rules, residents allege.



"The problem has only aggravated due to the road, which was laid three months ago. Every time it rains, water accumulates up to knee-level," says Ravi Kumar, an advocate who resides at the point from where Shanker Nagar begins and is among the worst affected.



Mosquito menace



Showing copies of representations and reminders sent to the MCH, Mr. Kumar says the last two months saw four representations and two subsequent reminders at all levels, but the stagnant pool remains. Adding to their woes, the stagnant water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.



"Closing all the doors and windows at sunset is the only remedy. No evening walks for the elders, and children have to remain inside. They (the officials) do not seem to understand all these," laments a resident.

Leander Paes and Martina Navratilova moved into the Semifinals of the Mixed Doubles at the 2004 US Open, beating Max Mirnyi and Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-4.

Paes and Navratilova, separated from each other by a tennis generation, had little trouble with their win, breaking Sharapova early on the first set, and breaking Mirnyi's much-vaunted serve in his first game in the second set.

Paes also proved that his razor sharp reflexes at the net are intact, repeatedly pulling off winners and seemingly impossible angles. Navratilova, on the other hand, played the part of senior partner to perfection, steadying the course with a sure hand. HYDERABAD: The story is usually the other way round. But now several "victimised husbands" have come together to protect themselves from their wives!



Bhaarya Baadhitula Sangham, which claims to have 350 members, will hold a convention here on Sunday to launch a struggle aimed at preventing misuse of laws by women with the connivance of police.



The association will provide a platform for those husbands who were implicated in false cases by their wives by misusing anti-dowry and other laws meant to protect women.



Association office-bearer Susheel Kumar said that there were hundreds of cases of women harassing their husbands and holding their in-laws' to ransom.



He said some women in connivance with police officials had implicated their husbands in false dowry cases and had even sent them behind bars.



Another office-bearer of the association, Mohammed Ali, said the proposed convention would discuss ways to curb the misuse of law.



He said the association planned to provide legal assistance to harassed husbands. He said efforts would be made to bring estranged couples together.



The association claimed that the number of men who were being subjected to mental and physical torture was increasing.
