India in olympics! was it worth it?

For India, Olympic silver = Rs 100 crore Indraneel Das

It may have cost the Indian Government close to Rs 100 crore in the last two years just to get one silver medal at the Olympics. This excludes what the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and other federations like Indian Hockey Federation and Sports Authority of India have raised through private sponsors in training and holding different championships.

Since 2002-03 to August 2004, the Sports Ministry has spent Rs 92.54 crore just for the preparation of various teams for Athens. This includes training, participation in international meets and exposure trips abroad. The Government has also distributed Rs 1.92 crore from the National Sports Development Fund to 11 elite sportspersons who qualified for Athens.

According to ministry sources, silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was sanctioned Rs 1 crore for his training programme out of which he was given Rs 78 lakh in advance. The rest of the amount would be paid once he submits his bills. Another Rs 1.94 crore was released under the scheme for talent search and training to promising athletes in different disciplines. Under this scheme, athletes received Rs 5 lakh each.

Apart from these, the government also distributed Rs 1 crore given by Nalco among some leading sportspersons and support staff.

Major beneficiaries were shooters Anjali Bhagwat (Rs 11,89,875), Rathore (Rs 6,68,852), Bindra (Rs 21,47,000), Deepali Deshpande (Rs 4,17,900), Suma Shirur (Rs 5,50,000); the archery team (Rs 10,50,000), throwers Neelam J. Singh (Rs 4,23,000) and Anil Kumar (Rs 15,76,000).

Coaches were also disbursed funds. Recipients included shooting coach Tibor Gonezold (Rs 7,78,950), weightlifting coaches Leonid Taranenko (Rs 1,80,000) and G.S. Sandhu (Rs 4,80,137) and sports psychologist Alison Radhius. Incidentally, the Australian team, with a total of 47 medals so far (including seven gold), spent more than Aus $300 million (nearly 976 crore) for preparing their team for the 2000 Sydney Games.

Is olympics it really worth 100 crores?

My opinion: money may have been used for better reasons

Right, and if you are saying that the money should be put to better use, then maybe we should ALL give up wasting money for ANY entertainment purpose and donate it to the poor people.

Senondly, today it may look like too much money for a single medal, but the peeps who participated are getting MAJOR experience. I, as someone who has participated in tourneys know that exp counts as much as talent. In fact I feel that the Govt. has been too kanjoos. If it ha been 200 crores then also it would not have mattered. After some time this same 100 Crore will fetch a lopt more medals as our athletes get exposure to International level competition (look what international exposure did to AB George).

Australia is such a small country (population-wise), and yet it spent 976 crores.. ten times of what we spent.. at the Sydney Olympics. And the efforts have paid off, cuz now Australia is third in the medals tally behind USA and China. Such great planning!

China -- the amount of money they spend on infrastructure would be too mind boggling to quote, but i'm sure its more than Rs. 5000 crore. Again, look at their performance -- almost on par with USA, which is supposed to be far ahead of china in terms of development.

100 Crore is not enough, we need to spend more if we want to perform at the Olympics. Countries like Iran, Egypt, UAE, etc are all ranked above us in the medals tally.. surely we can direct some money from Corruption towards Sports!!

I am of the same opinion rainie. Like Akhil said, we need to get some young blood into the administration and then we can hope for some improvement.

Hey, anybody have any news abt the goings-on on the IMG facility??
Things are supposed to happen the way they happen. And the reason they happen the way the happen is because you try to make them happen in a certain way and may or may not be succesful.

I kind of agree with rabbithole, i mean... in the case of Aus, is it really worth spending 500 million dollars for the 47 medals they got?

just for the sake of these games which happen once in 4 years and which do not really have a great significance compared to healthcare, is it really worth spending so much.

In India s case, i dont really think the money they spend is aimed only for olympics, not like they send the atheletes/sportsmen to train in some other country or with special infrastructure. iots more generalised, starting with the building of infrastructure, their travel. And when u look at the overa ll picture, it is less than 1 re from each of the tax payers pocket for the medal they got. but in the case of Aus, it is more than 5$ from the tax payers pocket for each medal they got.

mmmm... malliswari lifted 235 kgs on the previous day. She was nursing an injury alright, but she was medal hopeful. 235 would have given her another bronze, but unfortunately she agravated the injury. Thats how it is with weight lifters.
