It may have cost the Indian Government close to Rs 100 crore in the last two years just to get one silver medal at the Olympics. This excludes what the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and other federations like Indian Hockey Federation and Sports Authority of India have raised through private sponsors in training and holding different championships.
Since 2002-03 to August 2004, the Sports Ministry has spent Rs 92.54 crore just for the preparation of various teams for Athens. This includes training, participation in international meets and exposure trips abroad. The Government has also distributed Rs 1.92 crore from the National Sports Development Fund to 11 elite sportspersons who qualified for Athens.
According to ministry sources, silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was sanctioned Rs 1 crore for his training programme out of which he was given Rs 78 lakh in advance. The rest of the amount would be paid once he submits his bills. Another Rs 1.94 crore was released under the scheme for talent search and training to promising athletes in different disciplines. Under this scheme, athletes received Rs 5 lakh each.
Apart from these, the government also distributed Rs 1 crore given by Nalco among some leading sportspersons and support staff.
Major beneficiaries were shooters Anjali Bhagwat (Rs 11,89,875), Rathore (Rs 6,68,852), Bindra (Rs 21,47,000), Deepali Deshpande (Rs 4,17,900), Suma Shirur (Rs 5,50,000); the archery team (Rs 10,50,000), throwers Neelam J. Singh (Rs 4,23,000) and Anil Kumar (Rs 15,76,000).
Coaches were also disbursed funds. Recipients included shooting coach Tibor Gonezold (Rs 7,78,950), weightlifting coaches Leonid Taranenko (Rs 1,80,000) and G.S. Sandhu (Rs 4,80,137) and sports psychologist Alison Radhius. Incidentally, the Australian team, with a total of 47 medals so far (including seven gold), spent more than Aus $300 million (nearly 976 crore) for preparing their team for the 2000 Sydney Games.
