Indonesia executes Indian drug smuggler

AGENCIES[ FRIDAY, AUGUST 06, 2004 02:20:25 AM ]

JAKARTA: An Indonesian police firing squad on Thursday executed an Indian national who had been found guilty of smuggling heroin.

The execution of Ayodhya Prasad Chaubey, 67, in Medan city on Sumatra island, was the first death sentence carried out in Indonesia since 2001.

It came despite pleas for clemency by the Indian embassy and Amnesty International, which had complained that Chaubey's trial fell short of international standards of fairness.

"Chaubey was shot in the heart from a distance of ten metres," state news agency Antara quoted north Sumatra chief prosecutor Sudibyo Saleh as saying.

"He was executed by the firing squad at 2.30 am (local time) and was buried about three hours later in a Muslim cemetery at his own behest," said Kemas Yahya Rachman, a spokesman for the attorney general's office.

Chaubey was arrested along with two Thai nationals in Medan in 1994 after airport officials confiscated 12 kg of heroin.

They were sentenced to death in 1996. The two Thai nationals remain on death row.

mmm... I oppose it.

1. He was not given a fair trial.

2. I dont think the crime he comitted deserves capital punishment.

ok, i see the bait..

y do u think so many countries have such strict laws against drug smuggling? because it destroys more lives than one can imagine. For me, capital punishment in this sense is fully justified but only after a fair trial and guilt proven beyond any doubt coz a lotta times, an individual can be as much a victim as he's thought to be the perpetrator.
