drivin licence

hiya Guys,

does anyone know if its possible for a foreigner to get an Indian driving licence? I haven't got one from my home country (been driving for about 7 years in Ireland without a full licence, as they've only made it compulsary in the past 2 years). Before i could take my test i had to move to the UK, and i have not got the time/money to do it here.

So I was thinking of trying to get a 2-wheeler licence when i get to India. Is this possible, if i'm staying in the country for about 2 years?

its possible...but u might have to have some "address proof" to apply for a licence. u get an apartment here and after u pay yr first electricity or telephone bill, u can use that as your address proof. contact a friendly neighborhood "agent" who will get things done in a jiffy if the red tape confuses you....

yess and agent is needed....had u come an year ago may be u cld have got it done without an agent

i was reading the "problems" section of the main website, and i saw this. How hard is the test, and if i do it without an agent will i fail? and if i go through an agent is there a test?

i am not aware of the exact procedure now, but there is a practical test where u have to ride a vehicle on a test track. when i applied for a licence 9 yrs ago, a bored looking clerk asked me a few questions abt road signs and that was that! an agent knows the right ppl to approach and the correct procedure, but if u have time n patience, u can get it done by yrself in a day or two.

all i had to do was drive around in an '8' in the RTA place..

taking care tht i switched the indicators on at the appropriate time.. also answered the road signs to a cop who said "Excellent" at the end of it

mere ko bhi aisa ich hua....

but now they have a new testing track at nagole....

they make u do all sorts of things....the place is far off so it takes at least half day.

but now that congress is there i guess u can get it easily by shelling out a few bucks.....

Went to RTA office to apply for licence, it was chaotic... 100's of people pushing and shoving each other and only two agents in counter. went back home, gave 500 rs to a person who lives near our place and works in RTA office, got my licence (two wheeler and 4 wheeler) delivered to home :lol:

i had the same experience of gettin lost in the rush!

but i did not go to an agent

instead i drove without a license for 2 yrs :roll:

I got my licence in a jiffy. Went to the RTA office and applied for a Learner's licence. Got that the same day. A month later (that is the minimum time you need to hold a Learner's for) went back to the RTA office and applied for the permanent one. Got that in a day too!

No red tape. No agent. No tout. All things done honestly, through the proper channels. I might be the devil, but I do know the importance of the law. If more people took a little more initiative, we would probably have much fewer cases of road rage.

Anyway, coming to Marko's case. Marko, I suggest you get yourself an international licence before you come to India. Helps if you have one. Then you would not have to go through the Learner's licence process. You would be cutting down a month of the process. And, you would realise that things are not as bad as we Hyderabadis make them out to be - we have a propensity to exaggerate. You might actually be surprised by the efficiency with which the new-look RTA functions!

yes....i had to use an agent in the "old" days...abt 9 ys ago. now its all smooth n computerized. its not necessary to go for an agent, but i suggested one for u since a new comer like u mite be bewildered by the process and/or possible questions in the form/by the clerks.

like luci said, better arrange an international licence for yrself, else u might have to apply for a Learners' Licence in the beginning and then apply for a permanent one after a month. i think if u have an Int. Licence, u need not apply for an Indian one.

CAD, he might still need to apply for an Indian licence even if he has an International one depending on the treaty we have with his country.

hey, thanks for all the advice guys! i would get a licence over here, but the cost involved is crazy, i just don't have the cash. (i would need a few lessons as my habits are bad)

I don't mind not being able to drive for the first month or so, but if i was over there for a few years i'd hate to think there would be no way for me to get a licence. Glad to see that it looks like there is a way.

getting a license is one thing.....driving on the hyd roads is another

that wld require a whole tutorial to learn.....or may b a seperate thread

the only tutorial tht exists for tht is to take a car n get out urself..
