Deadline nears, hostage's village begin agitation

REUTERS[ FRIDAY, JULY 30, 2004 02:13:20 PM ]

UNA (Himachal Preadesh): Hundreds of people blocked traffic in northern India on Friday in protest against the government's failure to win the release of three men held hostage in Iraq, as a deadline set by the kidnappers drew near.

Villagers squatted on a state highway leading to the home of Antaryami, one of seven foreign truck drivers being held by militants, who have threatened to kill one of them by 7:00 pm (1500 GMT) on Friday.

His captors released a videotape showing a masked man pointing an automatic rifle at Antaryami, who looked frightened and was sweating.

"If something happens to him, we will burn government offices and the government will be responsible," said his sister Harjinder Kaur in Una in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh.

Groups of protestors sat on railway tracks, disrupting train services.

What is wrong with these people? Does burning govt buildings and squatting on railway tracks help release the hostages? It made sense when IC 814 was hijacked, but what can the govt. do in this case?

Surely the govt didnt send those three men to work in Iraq, they went there on their own and know that there is a clear risk. Besides the kidnappers are not asking for a ransom, they want all Indians to stop working in Iraq, and its not in the hands of government. Does damaging public property do any good? India is the only nation in the world where I see this kind of attitude. Emotion takes over commonsense.

they did right in protesting.

the indian govt is lax abt this so ppl have to vent their anger. unfortunately they do it by destroying public property. but then they don't get noticed.

the 3 indian lives are more precious than the property destroyed. i hope the indian govt wakes up and does something positive soon. JAI HIND.

no my friend it is not the govt's fault. definitely it is the workers fault for going there.

but the govt has to do something..

if one of our countrymen makes mistakes its logical that the govt helps him out... here it is a matter of life and death for those 3 poor people..

:? like what? the kidnappers havent demanded anything from the Indian Govt. they only want the hostages' Kuwaiti employers to quit Iraq...
Desi tech Baba wrote:ohhh u mean the workers went to work there before the so called war?
they might have gone before or after the war started...thats not the issue here. The Indian govt is not in a position to do much here, unless they are having some secret negotiation to pay off the kidnappers, which would be unfortunate but necessary for the 3 Indians' safety
wtf? i no longer care if my posts hurt yr feelings

Apathy

by DQ » Mon Aug 02, 2004 7:16 am

Apathy....Apathy!

Yes, the Govt is not to be blamed.

The Blame lies squarely on.

1. The Tax Evader

2. The Corrupt Politician

3. The Corrupt Govt official.

4. The So called religious organisations.

Above are the people who are responsible for the growing poverty and despration in the common man.

Its heartning the kith of the victims turned to the religious parties for mediation.

It shows their sheer ignorance.

It has been ingrained into them that these parties can remove them of their current plight (Poverty).

The fact is exactly the inverse, these are the people who are responsible for it.

The poor people did not even realise that, it could instigate matters worse, if the likes of such parties intervene.

Jai Hind (Yes hail India). Its is India's Image in the minds of people around the globe that the Indian abducted are still safe. Given the fact that a few pakis have already been beheaded.

Do not start a row of India / Pak here. Please.

It is the poor who are left to suffer.

Wheter it be an Indian or Paki, reports show that these people have spent between 1,00,000 to 2,00,000 to secure these jobs and work for just over 10,000 a month.

Reality:

No jobs in India

Available jobs, unnecessary abuse.

Paltry sum paid.

They beg/borrow and go abroad for a better life.

Every Indian, while going out is leaving is near and dear, leaving his soil, going out to cover up the mess created by the above.

When it comes to survival, you tend to ignore the dangers involved.

Well there is a long discussion to this too. Will need a new blog or post for the ex pats.
