i'm curious about this, as my experience is a much smaller proportion of Indians drink alcohol than people in most western countries. This is based on 6 months in the south, and meeting lots of guys through my company who don't drink. I think i've only met 1 Indian woman who drinks in all that time.

So what do you guys think, do a large percentage of Indians drink, and is it more popular in some regions than others? (obviously not popular in Gujerat, they're dry, right?)

Fact : The production of Scoth Whiskey in India is more than the amount produced in Scotland itself!!!

dude, when u consider the population of India, the small percentage of drinkers will turn out to be massive when compared to the western countries.. Drunk drivers are a hazard everywhere man, doesnt matter how many are on the roads.. here, the biggest problem is with the transportation ppl, truck drivers are usually loaded at nights causing quite a high number of fatal accidents on the highways.. :x

indians drink in every corner of india...including 'dry' Gujarat....except that some do openly and some in the closet.

drinking was always there in India since times immemorial (starting from 'Som Ras' in the Vedic Civilization), but advent of Victorian morality via the Brits made a taboo of the practice.

women drinking is also generally frowned upon, but these days its gaining acceptance, esp in big cities.

Not just somras, CAD. It is also called Madira - in fact I wonder why people frown on mortals when they drink while the Gods seem to do it everyday in their court with the courtesans dancing!

yeah, i know drunk drivers are a hazard everywhere. What are the laws in India, and why aren't they inforced like most other places? It's not difficult to keep comercial drivers from drinking, make sure they will never drive again if they're caught. the prospect of losing their livelyhood will stop most after a while.

Four good reasons why we(people) frown upon drinking as compared to GODs...

1. Gods dont drink and drive...

2. Gods dont drink and act like rowdy's...

3. Gods dont drink and ill treat women...

4. Gods dont drink and hit children...

Also; on earth you can go to a Bar which has dancing girls! Chandani Bar dekha nahin kya ??
