i dont know why people are so particular.

>> don't know why my malayalee christian friend (who belongs to a syrian orthodox church) isnt allowed to marry the love of his life (a malayalee christian gal who belongs to the catholic church).

>> don't know why my gujarati bori muslim friend isnt permitted to marry someone outside his community... in fact, his sister didnt find a suitable bori muslim match in india so they married her off to some dude in karachi, pakistan (who was a "100%" bori).

>> don't know why my kashmiri hindu friends parents have issued orders that he has to marry only a fellow kashmiri.

its not about racism, its about people wanting to preserve their own culture. i dont subscribe to this view, but then most asian communities are "like this only".

I didnt want to post anything since it seems that everyone has been bragging about being indian and how americans (or any firangs) are. I cant say that i'm confused but rather shocked. I had Indains parents who went to the States after having me and I went shortly after...so I never learnt a lot of the indian culture except through Sunday 1-hours specials on a spanish channel.

I did learn some through interest provided by one of my uncle's (who lives an hour and half away). So Maybe Sunday afternoons would be to have a community get-together (an hour to go and an hour to come!!!)

One thing I have noticed about my upbringing is that I was never subjucated to the Indian and Muslim controversies (rivalries?) that happens in India. I had lots of friends (not just "indians") For me indians were everyone from India.

My father being indian obviously wanted me to date only indian girls....I don't think he appreciated the fact that she was American "Indian"! (joke ok) but seriously he didnt appreciate americans...now what to do when the closest indian girl is about 2 hours away and she's got tons of other indian guys that live there??

Anyway..thats me cribbing about how my indian parents carried the indian values over to me. 98% in Biology Honors was not good...why not 100%...or that I have to become a doctor or an Engineer or an MBA grad...

Please dont take it the wrong way and get upset...but i wanted to put in my two cents(and maybe a bit more). (I know it kinda random...)
Does anyone even read these?

ZC....Face the Perfect ire as you've angered the perfectionist.

Every place in the world will have strife. And India is no exception. You're being judgemental by looking at only the negatives in India and escaping from the positives by calling them a show off.

Try and defy my logic.

No....Indian values are welcoming even unknown faces and treating them as guests. Sharing whatever is available with the guest and making him feel comfortable. im just saying>>

I don't care about other countries, and I haven't labelled any as "bad" yet. However, there are countries with a predominantly bad element in them - Pak, North Korea.

About India, it is a great country with good people. A small percentage of them maybe bad, but don't blame the whole basket because of few bad apples.

Nobody was looking at things in Black and white till you entered the scene. We were all talking about positives and negatives at both the places. In the past, I've written against several Indian practices as well as individuals. Whatever you said here doesn't really hold true for me.

ZC wrote:again, explained above +ve and -ve look at both everywhere........before u start pointing fingers at others

If you read my post carefully, which I don't think you have, you'll notice that I didn't point my finger at anyone. All I did there was to explain you some truths about actual Indian culture, which I also agreed has diluted quite a lot.

ZC wrote:Indians: The Most Racist of All Humans

Who was pointing fingers here?

ZC wrote:thats escapism by using an idiom, make ur point.........i can say the same when u guys call others countries as bad !!

Idioms never imply escapism. They are just another way to put across a point in a telling manner. I'm not surprised you took it otherwise. As I said, everything seems yellow to the jaundiced eye.

ZC wrote:dont get personal, i dont want to stoop to ur level

Correction.....to come to my level, you'll have to rise...not stoop. You're enlightened now.

ZC wrote:no point comparing with stupid countries, u have to look ahead for progress, not behind.......

What do you mean by looking ahead? US & UK? Do I even need to point out how many things are swept under the carpet there? Atleast the Indian media has a much higher sense of decorum. They do sensationalise things....but the things they sensationalise have some bearing on the common man. Not stuff like the private lives of celebrities etc.

ZC wrote:religious harmony blah, blah, blah.....and u see differentiation by caste, religion in all aspects of life, go to a village and look

You'll see the same ghettoisation everywhere ZC...stop being so pessimistic about your own country.

ZC wrote:again, make ur point....dont use idioms, i can use the same, remember that all idioms u use are equally applicable to both parties in an argument

Nobody stopped you from using them. And I will accept your argument about the same idiom holding true for both sides if you can back it up with adequate facts. As stated earlier, I know that every nation is made up of both good and bad elements and I won't have a problem accepting the same again.

ZC wrote:HPs Case rested !! he doesnt know how to make a point !! either gets personal or uses idioms !!

Teach me how to make a point sir. Mai zindagi bhar aapka aabhaari rahoonga.

I somehow see you as a faux-patriot when and where its convenient. sheepishly servile in front of others and painfully pessimistic amongst ourselves.
