The Buddha's teachings resembled Hindu lines of thought - and basic principles like Karma and Rebirth remained the same. However, he disagreed with the prevalent practise of castes.. it had become a social evil. By winning the hearts of the common man, his word spread far and wide... all over the far east.. and somewhere along the line acquired the name Buddhism.

World's Biggest Statue: Dont see the point in it, but I guess it'll give our country a little more publicity and tourists.

ZC, I meant we should be happy as Indians. Im not Hindu or Buddhist, but the worlds biggest Buddha statue will be in India. And that fact will get a lot of fan-fare and publicity.

Why are you bringing up my faith on this topic? :?

ZC wrote:did u read a thoery which says "buddha is Vishnu incarnation"
i read abt it...Buddha's considered one of the 10 Avatars of Vishnu....that was added to the Legend of the 10 Avatars by the later day Hindus in order to show that Buddhism was a branch of Hinduism....
ZC wrote:like any other Saint, people branded it as Buddhism..........i am not sure if he ever said, "I am starting Buddhism"
no he didnt. those days there was no concept of religion coz what we call Hinduism is just a way of life. There was no "other" religion to compare it with, so no one even thought on those lines.

Buddha started a new way of life which became popular among the oppressed classes bcoz of its caste/class less idea. Buddhism is atheistic. No Gods or Rituals allowed. A buddhist has to live a proper life as Buddha ordained in his 8-Fold Path.

Lexi...i think ZC was refering to yr comment "Dont See The Point In It". it looks like he was trying to say that you wud have seen the point in the statue if u were a Hindu...

...a good point!
ZC wrote:...if u start doing that for Siddhartha !!
but Siddhartha refused to follow the rules of what is called "Hinduism" and set up his own rules for his followers. thats why there was lots of opposition to Budhdhism from early Hindus.
anyway in those days there was no concept of religion. "Hinduism" as we know it had no name and was only a way of life. maybe thats why no one thought of calling Buddhism a seperate religion. i think it was considered only an atheistic branch.

did u read a thoery which says "buddha is Vishnu incarnation" ...btw, he didnt refuse to follow the rules of Hinduism, he was just upset with reality/life.......... he started preaching like any other Saint, people branded it as Buddhism..........i am not sure if he ever said, "I am starting Buddhism"

Yes, of the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, buddha is the ninth.

He was born a Hindu prince, like ZC said, he got vexed with death and killings and went away for enlightenment.
If I am the future, we are history.

i think that myth got added late by the hindus who did not want to recognize Buddhism as a seperate philosophy.

early puranas do not speak of 9 incarnations. according to the puranas, Kalki is the 9th and yet to come
