* ‘Special’ Teacher Rewarded by ‘Super Special’ Student’!

On 10 June, at New Delhi, Smt Kamal Baduni, Widow of Major Sanjay (Killed By Militants in 1995), a Computer Professional and a Mathematics Teacher at a School in Punjab, held the Olympic Flame in her hand and ran for about 400 Metres. She ran along with the Who’s Who of the Country including Kapil Dev and Others.

Amit Singh, one of her Students, from Classes VIII to X, had written in an Essay about her as his ‘Role Model’. Smt Kamal was Rewarded by the Organisers of the Essay Competition with the Honour of Carrying the Olympic Torch, the Lone Teacher in the Country to be thus Honoured. She calls it the Most Precious Gurudakshina she has ever received. Amit is studying for a Degree in Engineering in Bangalore.

Nineteen-Year Old Amit described his ‘Role Model’ as a ‘Mother Figure’. “I lost my Mother and I look up to her (Smt Kamal),” he says, “Whatever I am today is largely due to what I have picked up from her. She has given me the strength to carry on in life.”

Smt Kamal calls Amit her ‘Beta’ and says, “This (the Replica of the Olympic Torch she was gifted at Delhi) is My Most Prized Possession. I have decided to preserve the Uniform as well …”

A Neuroscientist and a Comedian, in UK, have developed a mathematical formula for the Perfect Joke:

X = (FL + NO) / P

The Equation considers the Length of the Joke’s Build-Up, the Comedic Value of the Punch-Line and the Groan-Inducing Qualities of Puns. The Best and Worst Jokes are awarded Values on a scale of Zero to 200, with 200 being the “Funniest”!

A Comedic Value is dfetermined by multiplying the Funniness of the Punchline (F) by the Length of the Build-Up (L). This is added to the amount someones falls over (N) to the Power of O – the “Ouch” Factor of Physical Pain Or Social Embarrassment. The Total is then Divided by the Number of Puns (P), which Reduces Laughter.

The “Perfect” Joke would therefore score 10 for punch line and length and contain a high number of pratfalls or social embarrassment but no pains. So, many traditional gags, such as the “knock, knock” jokes that have short build-ups, no falling over and end in puns, score lowly.

Jain Guru Muni Sunermal Swami and his Followers came to Hyderabad as part of their All-India Yatra to Promote Non-Violence. A Band of Women of Junbedia Village, about 280 KM away from Kolkata, in West Bengal’s Bankura District, helped to wipe out Alcoholism in the Region. Led by their Leader Manju Bauri, they patrol the Streets from 7 PM and Stop Drunken Men from entering the Village. They destroyed Liquor and Ganja Shops. The 25-Odd Women used to target man noted for drunken brawls and thrash him. The Men soon came to their Senses. “We haven’t touched a drop for the last 45 Days. * “Diluted” Ghee at Tirumala!

TTD Officials frowned upon the “Moisture Content Beyond Permissible Limits” in the Ghee supplied by AP Markfed, which procures it from TNDDC. On 2 June, while pouring the ghee from a tin, due to high moisture content, it caught fire and a worker suffered minor injuries. The TTD Kitchen uses Every Day Three Hundred Tins of Ghee, each weighing 24 Kg. “We purchased 30,000 Tins and there were no complaints. Markfed promised to ensure better quality of ghee in future too,” an Official said. – TNIE, 1 July 2004, p 5.

* Theory of Multiple Intelligences by Howard Gardner (1983)

This goes beyond the well-known Intelligence Quotient (IQ) Test as a Tool to Quantify Verbal and Computational Intelligence. Gardner defined Intelligence as “the capacity to solve problems or to fashion products that are valued in one or more cultural settings”. He formulated a list of Eight Intelligences: Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical, Visual-Spatial, Musical, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal and Naturalist. The Strength and Weakness of the Muliple Intelligence Test is that the Intelligences are used Concurrently and Typically Complement each other.
