well, i follow this name format and seen endless delays n confusion among everybody right from my school days. coz of this format, my dad's initials are different from mine and this was not accepted in my primary school in hydbad...for a few days the teachers scolded me and forcibly changed my dad's initials in the record , untill my dad came and cleared the confusion

even at the passport office i had to talk a lot, to explain this 'strange' naming format.

another thing in this format is that traditionally (as in mine) the dad's name comes before my name, as an initial. so many northies and videshis think my name is my surname and call me by my dad's name. sometimes i feel i need to carry a placard, or hand out cards, displaying my name format



at least my son wont face this confusion: in his birth cert. i've appended my name after his name - northie/videshi style - so that people will know whats his actual name and whats his 'surname' (ie my name)



Abolishing surnames altogether will be a great idea...follow Parsi style and call everybody by their vocation:

im not sure abt how names convey the caste coz we dun have that sys. but its useless, dunya think?? casteism is just as bad as racism or another form of it for that matter..

sometimes there will be overlap....they they will clarify based on the circle the people they move in...or askin directly

Good thread.But its just impossible.If possible,it will take some time.As someone earlier said people have to realize. Some people argue that this will only happen if people are educated,but WTH educated people support this system as you can see the votes in the poll

...the 50 yr start is enuf. even Ambedkar wanted reservations for a short duration. now even the well to do and rich SCs/STs are enjoying reservation at the expense of economically backward FCs.

and the bad-treatment of the fellow caste people in villages

that will never disappear thru reservations. only education can eradicate it. in fact reservations can fuel resentment in disadvantaged FCs.

in our classroom there were around 5 sachins....when ever our lecturer called out that name all of them stood up....so he had to use the surname...thats why it is useful
