Yoo Speekah In Engaleesh??

by The Crackednut » Thu May 20, 2004 1:13 pm

uhm... we are a bunch of 9-10 friends who meet occasionally at a friend's place and start JAMming. We'd be probably meeting over this weekend. So does hyd have any serious JAMmers(what a pun!!!! )? Do you smell any trigger-happy folks nearby? Any previous winners or sore losers? Lemme know the numbers so we could organise a good JAM session.

PS:: For once, this JAM ain't about bread, nor is it about music. :P

Also PS doubling up as dirty disclaimer::
I'm no proffesional JAMmer nor do i claim my friends to be so but if u think u've got a mouth for it... then hop on!

Here's a small article about what JAM actually is and how it all started on the BBC. To play the game amongst ourselves, one of my friends has made the software for the timers/scoring and has also created the buzzers himself. To those who know not what JAMming is... read on. And those enlightened know exactly kind of FUN what i am talking about !

Just a Minute was devised by the late Ian Messiter, who came up with the idea on the top of a number 13 bus, where he suddenly remembered the horrible task of speaking for one minute without hesitation or deviation being meted out by one of his school masters to his class. Producer David Hatch put the pilot show before a BBC development board, who were sceptical that the series would run for more than six programmes. Thirty-five years later, Chairman Nicholas Parsons continues to attempt - and mostly succeed - in keeping control over a roll-call of celebrity contenders attempting to talk on a subject for sixty seconds without hesitation, repetition or deviation.
The concept of the game is ridiculously simple, until you try it when you find that it is simply ridiculous, as Nicholas Parsons has said on more than one occasion. It doesn't sound too hard to speak on a subject for 60 seconds without hesitation, repetition or deviation... until you try it! As originally produced Just A Minute had two regulars Clement Freud and Derek Nimmo who would be joined by female guests. Nimmo was the better known of the two, a comic actor and wit. He was to remain part of the show until his death in 1999. On the other side, Clement Freud was a well known chef and raconteur. He became a popular speaker and guest on chat shows in part because of his insulting remarks which were witty and delivered in a marvelously flat voice.
Nimmo and Freud had in common a competitive instinct. Many of the other panellists did not take the competitive element as seriously. But Freud and Nimmo would usually win for many years with Freud in particular developing various methods of getting points: leaving challenges until the last second, lists, and slowing down to a slow mumble.
After the first series, it was decided to trial a different format with three people in the panel. It seems the shows were intended as trials, although they were broadcast. Parsons and Freud returned (Nimmo was unavailable) and they were joined as regulars by Kenneth Williams and Geraldine Jones. In the six shows all four took a turn as chairman, although it quickly became clear Parsons was best at that job. At the time Williams was one of the best known names in British comedy, star of the successful Carry On movie series, and many radio and TV shows.Geraldine Jones was an actress with a ready wit. The brief series of trials saw Williams stand out.
When the show returned later in the year it was in the format that we now know, with four contestants. For a time, Nimmo, Freud and Williams appeared in every show with a woman guest. But when Nimmo was overseas on tour during the recording of one season he was replaced by Peter Jones, a comic actor, witty writer, now loved for his lugubrious humour and his ability to pull the leg of everyone including himself. Jones was a pioneer in radio improvisation being the first comedian to be allowed to take to the air waves without a BBC approved script, back in the 1950s.For all of the 70s and 80s, Williams, Freud, Nimmo and Jones alternated with one or two guests. But Williams became the star, loved for his tantrums, his putdowns of the others, and especially his voice.

Spreading the word!

by The Crackednut » Tue Jun 01, 2004 1:21 am

OK Ladies and Gentlemen... The JAM-man is here again bumping this thread to the top!

First off, let me thank HP and MLS for making it for the JAM last time. I hope you had a great session of laughter and fruedian slips :P. Believe me, there is more in store!

The JAM fever has started to show some rather terminal symptoms on your truly. For starters, The Crackednut thinks he can rule the world! Well, if not the world, he'd scale down to settle for Hyderabad.

So junta, lend me that monitor-space for this message. We (loosely defined as a bunch of engineers and graduate students) are planning in holding a series of JAM sessions almost every weekend for the next month or two. We are eager to know of other jammers in this city, and if they do exist, we'd love to JAM and learn from them. We meet up every saturday or sunday and have an evening of unbridled humour. So to all the students, corporates, celebrities, radio-jockeys, teachers, servicemen, singers, dabba-waalas, dopeheads, girls and any other non-entities that i might have forgotten, consider this as an open invitation!

Hyderabad doesn't hve a thriving JAM scene. Not any that i can think of. The other metro cities on the other hand do have a handful of colleges that never fail to entertain. Further on, JAM has always been restricted to a predominant college audience. So we'd like to break these moulds. Since there were never any JAM competitions, we thought we'd make our own. So in a way, we're kick-starting this whole mini-awareness campaign amongst all those who can form simple English sentences. It is our attempt in bringing together all such like-minded ppl under the same roof. If you think you could blow the words right out of the opponents' sorry arse, then feel free to drop in a PM at this ID. i cd get in touch via mail/SMS.

Anyways, this saturday - 5th may - from 1600 hr, there shall be a bunch of guys and gals playing Just A Minute. Those interested ... you know what to do ! **pants and flops right on the sofa**
