wow!...my fave topic n i am seeing it this late....damn!

most of my choices have already been mentioned by most, but here are my choices again, starting from snax:

1) Chaat items - Gokul, Agra (Parklane), Radheshyam (MG Road)

2) Paani Puri - Gangotree (hygenic but good! :D ) else i prefer buying puris from shops n making the rest at home. My record is an entire packet of puris, didnt count, but must be abt 40-50. i wanted more at the end, but sadly none left :(

3) Mirchi Bajji - Gokul, a bandi at A.S.Rao Nagar, a big sweet shop at Minister's road (name forgotten but some 'Narayan'), Patel Sweets at Karkhana (inside Vasavi Nagar), a bandi at Gandhinagar, a shop at Ameerpet nr Divya Shakti.

4) Dosa/Wada/Idly - Swati Tiffins (secbad stn), Kamat (anywhere), Anand Vihar (Begumpet nr Rahul Bajaj), Chutneys, a bandi in R.P.Road, a Bandi nr Secbad Pizza Hut, a road side joint near Vacs (karkhana - mornings only). u get divine Sambar-Idly/wada at Windows in Cyber Towers (thats the only thing i like there ) and its their fastest moving item in the morning.

5) Puffs n other snax - Vacs, Baker's Q (Karkhana), Universal, a place in A.SRao Nagar...name forgotten, but current fave - Corn CLub (ameerpet)

6) Punjabi food - Sher e Punjab (diamond point), Needs (nr St.Fransis), Silicon Dhaba (madhapur)...in that order. IMO, nothing else comes close in taste or price, with apologies to Medchal highway.

7) Chinese - Haiking (Himayatnagar), Main Land China, Chinese Pavilion, Chin Ling (nr Sangeet), Alex's Kitchen. IMO Nanking is overrated -oily n spicy chinese(?) food...ugh...

8) South Thalis - Taj Mahal (abids n secbad), Southern Spice, Gayatri Bhavan (Himayatnagar), Minerva

9) Andhra - 7th Heaven, Coastal Spice, Southern Spice, restaurant at Viceroy.

10) Ice Cream/Desserts - Softy Den, NYers (brownie!), Ohri's, Vacs.

i am going for a snack, more later :P

Many a time we hear a restaurant is good, we read reviews and all but once we go there its not quite like what we expect. And sometimes we try something new that tastes so atrocious that we stop eating the dish altogether.

Starting this thread so that people can tell what their fav food item in their fav restaurant in Hyd, something that they would personally recommend.

As for my list :
Steamed Dosa/Mysore Bajji @ Chutneys
Brownie@New Yorker
Sambar Rice @ Orchids (better believe it!)

Will add more as and when I remember

Over to you Full Hyd'is ...................

PS: Could you please leave out all the newt eye soup , cockroach antennae sizzlers, roasted feotuses and phelgm ice-cream sprinkled with a good dose of boogers. :?

Three steps to alleviate your tummy ache:

Step 1 : Please stop browsing this thread

Step 2 : Start a New thread (preferably) in the NRI section with a name "Good Indian food in USA/<State you stay in>"

Step 3 : Pray that some FH user in the US (Mayavi Morpheus, Arch or someone browse your thread)

firstly i hate idlis so the traditional south indian vegetarian dishes are a no-no.

Persis' biryani rules...the aroma...the tender mutton...it is totally a different trip.

grilled chiken at the restaurant opposite Diamond hotel at masab tank rules...

a whole chicken marinated(?) and roasted, just the thought of it makes me drool.

hmmmm....food....damn the sasser that got into my comp yesterday. Missed this. Anyways....better late than never.

I came to hyderabad last year with a lot of gastric expectations...and save those couple of heavenly treats, I've been disappointed more or less.

Biryani for starters : Have tried Paradise, Garden, Aadab, Niagara, Hyderabad House and many others. Still nothing to beat the biryani I learnt to cook from that wonderful cook Nanumiyan from Ahmedabad. Cooked that last sunday for a friend from B'lore and everyone who tasted it said that twas the best they'd had yet. Bow to the master.

Continental : Never knew that heaps of veggies with dollops of assorted cheese qualified as excellent continental food in this city of rocks. The continental fare I tasted in Dombivli was better.

Chinese : The less said the better. Haven't eaten at Chinese Pavilion but Mainland China & Ohri's were disappointing to say the least. And how can I forget the chinese food I once ate from the roadside bundi. It was nothing less than Maoesque enlightenment eating noodles tempered with Urad daal and curry leaves. Enough Said!!!!!!

Snacks : The south indian fare is very good. It has been one of the plusses of my culinary exploits in hyderabad. Someone mentioned Haridwar and believe me, the ginger gobi dosa is manna from heaven. As for sandwiches etc., they are passable at best, save Subway (Not something that can be attributed to hyderabad by any chance).

Desserts : Khubani ka meetha from any decent place scores 500/100. The stuff is nothing less than superlative. Cakes & pastries in hyderabad? naahhhh.....yuck.....too syrupy except for the ones at Kakatiya.

Food is one aspect where I miss Ahmedabad (that's where I shifted to hyd. from and not one of the places i like otherwise) a lot. I crave for the tawa food (chaap fry, gurda kaleji and rotis followed by a masala khichdi that singes everything from your lips to your butthole - divine). I long for the ande ki variety. Ever heard of things like Purdah Tukdi (A half fried egg topped with a gravy made of fried onions, tomatoes and mashed boiled egg); Ande ka dosa (plain omelette with a bhurji filling) and what not? I dream of the wonderful moghlai parathas at Babu Moshai (Tried Roll Call at Nagarjuna Circle - sucked to say the least).

Sorry to have bothered you all with the ahmedabad stuff. But then 44 posts on food made me nostalgic.
