Food for thought

by Mona Lisa Smile » Wed May 12, 2004 11:55 am

This is just as an after thought of what me and Jasz discussed last evening.

Many a time we hear a restaurant is good, we read reviews and all but once we go there its not quite like what we expect. And sometimes we try something new that tastes so atrocious that we stop eating the dish altogether.

Starting this thread so that people can tell what their fav food item in their fav restaurant in Hyd, something that they would personally recommend.

As for my list :

Steamed Dosa/Mysore Bajji @ Chutneys

Brownie@New Yorker

Sambar Rice @ Orchids (better believe it!)

Will add more as and when I remember

Over to you Full Hyd'is ...................

PS: Could you please leave out all the newt eye soup , cockroach antennae sizzlers, roasted feotuses and phelgm ice-cream sprinkled with a good dose of boogers. :?

What do you mean by 'normal food', gg2m Mom? If by it you mean food of the lesser mortals, I concur. Otherwise, thou art simply degrading thy flair for such exotic dishes.

Anyway, not digressing any further, there is just one thing that comes to my mind - the lunch Thali at Malgudi. Sasti and Tikaau.

Most of all, I love our friendly neighbourhood chat bandi. In times of emergency (read extreme desire for chatpata food), it comes to your rescue! :P

As an absolute self-appointed connoisseur of Pani Puris, I can safely say that the best bandi you can ever find is the one opposite St. Francis (and it is even better if you are a hetrosexual male or a lesbian). KPHB has some very fine bandis. So, does Ameerpet crossroads. Some of them you find in Abids and Koti (esp those which the people carry on their heads) are fabulous. Of course, MG Road and SD Road rule.

No offence, MLS, but try pani puris outside hygienic environs. There is added taste due to all those tiny one-celled organisms.

Unfortunately, chat in hyd isn't such a hot deal. There is this chat bhandi about half a furlong from Diamond Point, where it tastes fairly good.

Chole Batura @ Kamat/Saifabad is yummy. So is the rawa masala dosa.

Temme about it! I grew eating all of the stuff mentioned above.

Plus the feeling of Pau Bhaji making it's way through the adrenal gland, into your oesophagus and melting down into a lava-like stuff in your tummy is truly blissful. Especially if you have Kala Khatta to wash off the oily remnants.

The last word in chaat-hangouts is Juhu Chowpatty.

So much talk on chat and no one mentioned Gokul at Koti opp womens college ...

Sorry bout it pope .. I know Mumbai is heaven for those who dig chat. Been there a few times in my childhood when my tastebuds werent exactly that developed.

Whats this about Diamond point? I had been practically staying so close and how could I have missed the bandis there !

Yes Lucifer, chat is pretty good only in bandis esp. if you see something brown in the finger nails of the guy who's serving you! No kidding. One of my fav was the guy on MG Road. Just opp his chat bandi would be a juice shop. Used to freak out for a good number of years!

Oh yes! Juhu Chowpatty rocks when it comes to chat. I have also had chat at Hazratganj, in the city of Nawabs, Lucknow. But, nothing compares to Chowpatty. Speaking of Lucknow, the place serves you some of the most delicious Tunde Kababs, Kulfi Falooda (trust me, Hyderabadi Falooda does not even come close), and the choicest of mutton dishes. Ssslurp!

Personally don't like Gokul all that much. Could never appreciate the idea behind buying coupons for pani puri before hand and then standing in line. Pani Puris are just hogged - there is no limit really to what one can have. My record stands at 75 pani puris in one shot. Any challengers???
