india has always been a secular country and will be that way. it has always accepted various religions even bfore the english men came along. but the term secularism came into use after they left. its there habit of adding an ism to anything they dont like.

we never see the leaders of those nations (uk us etc) using that term do v?

it very true. most of the communal divide we see till today have their origins in the Brit policy of divide n rule. That also encouraged growth of mass-fundamentalism, an unheard of phenomenon in those days.
thats why that word has become very important and relevant in the Indian context, given our heterogenous population.
now the electoral votebank-ism (-ism again!) has distorted the meaning of secularism and apart from the politicians, we have to blame our common public too for that. the people allowed the politicians to sow prejudice against other religions.
religion is an abstract concept. allowing that to dominate one's actions, esp compared with national duties, is truely crazy...

It's funny that you have too many religions whereas we have too less: Communism loses its market, Buddhism is old fashioned, what's people's belief? May be Money :?:

"Money-ism" would be the only 'ism that has the power to enforce world peace...no one likes to battle it out when they have a regular paying job and a comfortable living!

Can somebody shed light on Hindi language? Are these words such as "kaafi" giving pronunciation or meaning? Any links for initiatory Hindi learning? Thx.

me too...i'll forget what all i know. :(

without knowing how to pronounce the sounds u're all at sea...

dont go for learning the script, try to learn the spoken language first. its easier later to learn the script.

but first as Akhil says, learn some abuses  . they are the first words one shud know in any new language :D

 They was supposed to be "National abuse of China", and was used so often that their original meaning were ignored. In fact, you can use it as interjections such as "Oops". :D

You are welcome yaar :) Three dialects are mostly known to foreigners: Mandarine, Cantonese, and Hakka. They have different pronunciation but share the same Chinese character. Mandarine is official language and most widely used; Cantonese is used in Guangdong province and Hongkong; Hakka is used in Fujian province and Taiwan. (offical language of Taiwan is also Mandarine)
