Thanks azazel n black_wizard, for the info on the gig. I've already checked them out only recently at Qwicky's. Not sure if they wud've changed the set list significantly.

Reg. my kind of music, i like the classical rock bands like Deep Purple / Rainbow, Scorpions, Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Santana and the slightly mellow ones like Eagles, U2, REM etc. From the 90s scene i like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, RHCP, Extreme, Saigon Kick etc. Are there folks with similar musical interests? Will covering the above bands find an eager audience in Hyd? I can do a decent job on the vocals (covering bands like the above), and possibly chip in with rhythm / bass guitar. If there are other interested souls who can fill in the missing pieces (leads, drums and possibly keyboards), we can probably team up and explore where it goes :) (e.g. opening for the least known band visiting town ;) )

I am in touch with the local death metal clan, and I might just end up growling for them *wishful thinking* But i'm more of a rocker than a metaller, and wish to be involved in a rock act, irrespective of my luck with metal. I dunno if i made sense :)

hey! not fair! i posed a genuine doubt n then was responding to ZC's banter!

i admit i am not a metal-head...i lean towards so-called 'Black' music: Jazz, Rap, Blues, R&B and the like. in Rock i prefer old classics like JustaLittleUnwell mentioned (Eagles, Scorpions, BeeGees, Floyd, U2, also many songs of Guns n Roses, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith etc etc).

In hard rock n metal i just like certain songs that appeal to my ears, but those are few in number (like 'Nothing Matters'...or is it 'Something Matters'...by Metallica)

in my kind of music too, i go by my ear and also whether the songs perk me up. i dont go by band names, except for selected names like Eminem, 2Pac, Will Smith, Mary Blige and a few others.

now, wud anyone mind answering my original question...?

Hey JAL, since you didn't turn up for the last meet, maybe you'll make it for this one? Things could be discussed. If you're looking for a keyboard, count me in. The only problem is that I haven't got a decent one of my own :) Could manage the drums, alternatively, if they're provided...

Okay I could be wrong (PSD, Wizard correct me) but, as I see it, the main difference between hard rock and metal is the level of distortion on the guitar, with metal having a much higher level of distortion. Also, metal uses power chords more than hard rock. And, lastly, metal seems to use minor chords a lot more than hard rock does.

I know this is totally technical, but I don't think there's any other way to explain it. Sorry, ctrl bhai. Maybe I could explain it better during the meet ;)

well dude...PSD is always the right person to ask about metal and rock.

but then i shall give it a shot too

The basic difference is in the style of playing.

hard rock has its distinct style and so does metal.

yes u do have lots of power chords in metal...INVERSIONS, DIMINISHED.

The distortion too is different, but Zakk Wylde uses only OVERDRIVE to power his playing. That too on a Les Paul. Tricks of a metal guitar god dare i say???

then in metal u have a group of processors called STACKS.

hard rock doesnt make use of powerchords a lot ...but then if i try explaining the theory its gonna take a very long time...plus ur eyes are gonna b sore.

the sound also depends on the equipment.

for example:

Guitars like Fender, PRS, Gibson are ideally suited for hard rock...the pickups make the difference.

Guitars like ESP, B.C. Rich(the higher end models RULE!!!), Jackson are pure "METAL" guitars.

like i mentioned earlier, the pickups contribute to the "sound" a lot...

u have double coil pickups, humbuckers and the likes...

EMG pickups are the favourites.

not a very clear explanation i'm sure but i did try...

ROCK basically is derived from hajaar different forms of music(Blues, Jazz, Country, Folk etc etc). This is more of a "rhythm" based genre, and it doesn't conform to any particular style of playing, whihc makes it all the more difficult to describe it. Distortion, peppy drum beats in sync with the tempo, often clean and layered rhythms are some of the idiosyncrasies of this genre. For other nitty-gritties of ROck .

METAL is the bastard child of Rock. This is a "Riff" based genre, and is meticulously structured. Metal is an umbrella term for more or less the all the genres and sub-genres and what-not listed below-

Heavy Metal(HM): This is your basic metal prototype genre. The bass is dark, loud, full and slightly drunken, the leads are sharp and multi layered often accompanied by the heavy 'chugging' of the rhythms, the drumming is crisp and is slightly low on the mix. Anybody toying with the idea to experiment with metal, then this is your best shot.

Sub-Genres: NWOBHM, Power Metal, Speed Metal, Viking etc etc

Fav Bands: Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Falconer and Adagio.

Death Metal(DM): This genre has the disposition of repeating the same riffs again and again, while slowly building it up by playing it at higher notes till it reaches the acme and is usually followed by a huge roar, and discharges into either a hard-hitting frenzy or mesmerizing heart-rendering solos. The solos are simply awesome, and some of the best you'll ever get to hear. The drumming is extremely versatile and non-stop. Generally, the double bass is put to good use to suit the tempo of the music(though most of the newer bands seem to adopt a superfast, uninspiring mechanical style drumming)

Sub-Genres: Brutal DM, Melodic DM(eeeewwwww), Floridan DM, Technical DM, Gutenberg DM, NY DM etc etc

Fav Bands: PUNGENT STENCH, the unholy trinity of Incantation, Vader and Morbd Angel!, Immolation, Sinister, Deeds of Flesh, SUFFOCATION(yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhh!!) and early AMORPHIS.

Black Metal(BM): Simple, straight-forward rhythm structure, mostly mid-paced though occasionally blasting and always corrosive. Punk-like, in-your-face guitar playing and harsh, gruff though often incoherent vocal delivery is used to accentuate this genre. This was how it used to be 15 yrs back. Most of the 'newer' BM bands sound like -- "...blast-blast-blast-trill-trill-trill-satan-satan-trill-blast-satan-blast-blast...".

Sub-Genres: Atmospheric BM, Norsecore, National Socialistic BM, Goth, Holocaust etc etc

Fav Bands: Bathory! Bathory!! Bathory!!! Venom, Havohej, Belphegor and Graveland.

Doom Metal: Doom is one of the main offshoots of Death Metal. Imagine a slower, darker, less grinding, melodic version of DM - thats what Doom metal sounds like! Repititive mid-paced riffs and anti continuous drumming led by melancholic growls are the main features of this genre.

Sub-Genres: Slow Doom, Death-Doom, Funeral Doom, Atmospheric Doom etc etc

Fav Bands: Winter, early Anathema, Evoken, Unholy and Esoteric.

Thrash Metal(TM): There is nothing much to say about TM. You just have to listen to it, to get the feel of the music. This is about being yourself, letting yourself free... but, mostly it is about hyper-fast guitar grinding/crashing with spit-fire vocal delivery and awesome drumming. This lies somewhere between the Heavy Metal and Death Metal in the metal spectrum.

Sub-Genres: Bay Area Thrash, Garage, Deathrash, Speed Thrash etc etc

Fav Bands: Kreator, Sodom, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, POSSESSED(oh yeah!!) and WATCHTOWER!!!!!!!!!

If folks wouldn't mind and ponder over its domain name, this site provides tonnes of info on metal and its sub-genres: http://www.anus.com/metal/

Check the 'faq' section. Provides quite an insight about the ideologies at play - including sympathising with KKK, Nazism, nihilism etc. Just referring to some online info without prejudice :)

I play the guitar, but I don't consider myself good enough to be called 'a guitarist'. Can handle drums too, but am best at the keyboards. It's been a long time since I played on a good one, though. The last I played was a Yamaha PSR 610, and that was almost 6 years ago...
