Okay I could be wrong (PSD, Wizard correct me) but, as I see it, the main difference between hard rock and metal is the level of distortion on the guitar, with metal having a much higher level of distortion. Also, metal uses power chords more than hard rock. And, lastly, metal seems to use minor chords a lot more than hard rock does.
I know this is totally technical, but I don't think there's any other way to explain it. Sorry, ctrl bhai. Maybe I could explain it better during the meet
