16. Golkonda - the fort, from Golla Konda - the Shepherd's Hill

 Doesnt golkonda mean 'Gol' 'konda' - round hill? A mud fort was built by Rani Rudramadevi in late 11th century and was named gol konda kota, later QQ shah built a stone fort over the mud one. Seen this on TV.

I don't think that 'Konda' means Hill in Hindi since the first part of ure translation is in Hindi. I don't think that they would derive the name from 2 languages. In Telugu however, 'Golla Konda' means Shepherd's Hill.

BTW, found some info abt it on the net

Shepherd's Hill" or "Golla Konda", as it was popularly known in Telugu, has an interesting story behind it. One fine day, on the rocky hill called 'Mangalavaram', a shepherd boy came across an idol. This was conveyed to the Kakatiya king, who was ruling at that time. The king got a mud fort constructed around the holy spot. Over a period of time this lowly construction was expanded by the Qutub Shahi kings into a massive fort of granite.

Dont know how far its true(or false)

Ok, so a part of what I wrote is right except for the name. 'Konda' is a telugu word, and not hindi. Anyway shouldnt trust DD 8 to get their facts right, may be they mixed 'gol' (round, hindi) and 'konda' (hill, telugu) and attributed it to Rudramadevi.

BTW, ever heard of 'anjaan kodutunnav'? I always thought it was a telugu word, its only when someone told me that anjaan is hindi that I realised it.

Questionable & Answerable!

by Happy Hyderabadi » Thu Apr 08, 2004 12:23 pm

So, Our Hyderabad has 'Questionable' Features and happily 'Answerable', too!

Thank You, Ms M for the Qs and Mr Rock for the As.

Hyderabad is well known for 'Hybrids': eg 'Hussain'sagar, 'Himayat'nagar, 'Begum'peta, 'Shali'banda ('Shah Ali' Banda) ... Telangana Telugu uses and mixes Urdu words and phrases freely like 'anjan kodtunnav' , 'dimag ledu' and 'yad marchina'!

That's the Variety of Hyderabad and its Spice!
