I wouldn't know how I could describe my reading habits. I am not particularly choosy and would normally read anything that I can lay my hands on (except of course science fiction ;and the M&B variety - borrowed one from my sis and that was the only book that I willing left half read).

One problem for me is that I can't remember the names of the authors and the titles - not even the ones that I am currently on. This thus rules out intelligent conversation - or otherwise as well.

But I eagerly read much of the litereary reviews in the sunday newspapers and magazines - would that make me an armchair booklover? I used to subscribe to a - ohgod, what's the name - pretty decent magazine on books. Oh, yeah, Indian Review of Books. I don't know whether it is still around. I guess so.

This book club thingie interests me. I would definitely like to see other's review of book. Good bid

Book Club

by Five7Jaan » Mon Mar 29, 2004 12:50 am

Wow! I must say I am impressed by all your responses to this board.

And more impressed by the idea of a book club! Thank you fried_green for your excellent idea!

For a book club, I think each week would be a better deal. We don't have to gorge huge books, just small quirky ones that can be finished faster. That way the board won't die out. I mean this is an experiment in making and I don't want it to seem too professional from the start. We do need to have fun.

Each week, we can vote on a book or one member of the book club picks a book for everyone.

In the end, we dissect that book thoroughly!

-Five7Jaan

P.S. Above points are all I could think of. Please make any suggestions or changes and how about we start this on April Fools?

Er....wouldnt it be better if you people met each other personally....that way it'll be a REAL club and people can learn more than only about the book.

A book club is a great idea! the question is whether it shud be direct or online. I am sure the fullhydis in hyderabad can meet without any probs n update this site for the benefit of the REST.

btw, here its important to know where to get the necessary books. for most of us the books cud be expensive to buy on a regular basis. I generally buy my novels from Sunday Footpath market at Abids or from a used/pirated Book shop at lakdikapul thats open 6 days a week. they've got great collections. u might come across a dog-eared classic u've always wanted, at a throwaway price! they even buy back old books u r tired of reading.

(I know i cud be contributing to piracy, but wat2do? i cant afford to buy them regularly from 'proper' bookshops)

No, what I meant to say was that ever since I began working everything else has just taken a back-seat. Reading and a couple of other hobbies have been put in cold storage.

Dont count me in :D

BTW, did anyone see my request for 'Budugu'? I didnt find any site selling it online and AFAIK visalandhra book house is the only store which sells this book, but they dont have online sales. Can anyone help me in this matter?

If I dont get a response for this, I will have to request Five7jaan to ask the same question. Her posts always draw a response . May be she can start a thread about budugu and other cartoons characters

Budugu

by Five7Jaan » Wed Mar 31, 2004 3:19 am

Since I cannot deny a request [as indirect it may be] Mavayi, and because I am so nice, here is a site you could buy the book from.

http://www.indiavarta.com/Shopping/Book ... Cat=Humour

The last book is Budugu by Mullapudi Venkataramana for 80 Rupees.

Let me know if this helped.

cho chweeeeet!

Thanks jaanu, that helped. I should brush up my googl-ing skills. Somehow Indiavarta.com escaped me.....and change of plans, I am not going to buy it online, I will have someone buy it in store and post it to me  I just got this idea after visiting ur link 'cos book costs 80 bucks and postal charges are Rs 800  Ur effort is not wasted though, I found some other interesting books on that site.

Can I save the other two wishes for later, I hope I have ur word on it. Reminds me of Kakai and Dasharath with a role reversal.

thats usually the problem if we read the book first. while reading, we can imagine a scene as we prefer to see it and that gives the extra thrill.

in movies we are restricted to what the screenplay writer and the director imagined.

also a major portion, esp descriptive parts are left out in movies
