I am a voracious reader all right - i read any printed page near at hand. outside of work i dont touch techie books. i prefer pure fiction - either thrillers or comedy. i am not very particular about authors...i just need a good read!

I have a decent collection of Ludlum (luv his style), Sheldon (but new ones getting monotonous), Archer (nice story-teller), Puzo (outstanding) etc. I also enjoy the racy Hadley Chase type thrillers.

In comedies i love Wodehouse...who doesnt? i have also read n re-read Heller's "Catch 22" tho i am not impressed by the sequel and his other books.

I also love comics - the good ol' Amar Chitra Kathas, TinTin, Asterix, Archie, Phantom, Mandrake...

Five7Jaan wrote:The Mahabharata - I will agree its a much better read than Ramayana...I love flawed characters.

'Jaan...(may i call u dat?)...tho i am not much into religious books, i agree with you. I rate the Mahabharata very high coz its still contemporary n relevant.

btw, have anyone of you seen Shyam Benegal's wonderful early-80s film "KALYUG"...? its an imaginative n interesting adaptation of the Mahabharatha in the mileau of a corporate family misunderstanding...right down to the characters' names.

Was never the 'see-a-book, will devour it' kind, but I'm richer for all the names thrown up by this Board.

Loved 'The Alchemist'. 'Godfather' was good too. Tried reading 'Zen and the art....', couldn't get pass the 5th pg... guess wasn't in one of my 'reading moods' then.

Hey how come no one mentioned 'Doctors'/'Love Story' by Eric Segul ? Loved the equation between Barney Livingston and Laura Freeman.

'Gone with the Wind'? My friends and I were quite taken in by Rhett Butler's character at one point of time! :-)

We had Wuthering Heights, as part of our syllabi and Heathcliff was an interesting character.

Fiveof7-(Does it remind you of something, spaceship, warp drives, borgs)

You are right, its Dan Brown. Ray Brown is a Jazz Musician. He played with Ella Fitzgerald. I guess I got mixed up. Didnt read Illuminati? Heard its nice.

Also, What I like about Mahabharat is, the events are nicely interwoven and they could have easily happened here and now.

Did you guys read "To Kill a Mocking Bird" by Harper Lee. Its a nice book. I have trhe DVD Movie with Gregory Peck in the lead. Its awesome.

Sigh. I already explained my name, twice! No, I don't think in terms of spaceships etc when I think of Fiveof7.

Bimbette, unfortunately I haven't read Eric Segul! He is still on my to-read-list! Never touched Gone With the Wind/WHeights! Thought the movie was quite Ugh.

My most recent read is Five People You Meet in Heaven [very deep and moving].

Speaking of Mahabharat, [Thanks for your comments CtrlAltDel, and yes you may call me 'Jaan, since you asked so graciously] Who is your favorite character?

Mine would be Duryodhana [spelling?], I think he was cheated by everyone. Don't ask me why, I just sympathize more with villians in my warped mind.

57J - Why do you think Duryodhana was cheated. Because he was the son of the king and he never got the kingdom. But that would mean you favour nepotism! knowing the fact that Yudishtar was the most able person to be made the king. So should the son of a minister be given the keys to the state automatically or do you think the most able person should get it ?

The character I sympathise with the most is Karna. Though Krishna was the coolest and the person who gave direction to the whole drama. For some reason I didnt like pandus so much, sharing a wife just because their mother said so (without knowing what she was talking about). Kinda weird !

'The Rise n Fall of the Third Reich', just started reading it n already im amazed by the sheer detail which the author William L.Shirer has gone into in portraying the Nazis + saw Conspiracy on HBO last nite n it has further increased my interest in the subject.. :D me too, 'Jaan! for some reason i always root for the baddies in any story or film! without them evrything wud be so boring! in Mahabharata i admire Duryodhana (esp. coz of the TV serial), Shakuni (used his intelligence to get wat he wanted), Karna (the original Anti-hero). I also admire Krishna for his machiavellian shrewdness n success with girls (the original Casanova!)...!!!

My two cents :)

by Mona Lisa Smile » Mon Mar 22, 2004 1:05 pm

Wow so many books being discussed here......... I was never a voracious reader. As a kid it was all those Enid Blytons ...sigh they were fun (back then)really. :) And Amar Chitra Kathas. Could never keep away from those. I somehow missed out on Asterix and Tin-Tin. Wonder if its not too late to start of now :P

In college it was all those Sheldon , Ludlum (Bourne Identity being his best), Fredrick Forsythe (amazing story teller Fourth Protocal, Odessa File, The day of the jackal etc etc) and Jeffrey Archer(Somehow liked all his short story collections. Short attention span you see) Speaking of short stories William O henry, Somerset Maughm, Saki and Maupassant were real good.

I did try Gone with the Wind(never got past the first few pages) but was tough. Also watching the movie didnt help. I had a splitting after watching the flick. I really dont know how it got so many oscars! I dont mean to mix movies and books here but please dont try reading Forrest Gump. The movie is far far better. Prolly the only exception to my rule that the book is always better than a movie.

Off late I have just completed book called Celestine Prophecy and for those of you who have read and liked the Alchemist its an absolute must. Its not similar in style and narration but there is some kinda correlation.

Gibran is good!! I read only the "Prophet". Another one on similar lines is Stray Birds by Tagore. To kill a mocking bird is brilliant :)

I have heard so much bout LOTR and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy ... I guess I know what I am doing this weekend.(unless we have a scrabble meet ..... wishful thinking that!) :)

I really like Arjuna. I mean, everybody would want to kill someone who's kidnapped his wife, but Arjuna actually went ahead and did it. I believe the Michael Jackson song "The Girl Is Mine" was composed commemorating this feat.

There are others like me who haven't read Asterix, Tintin??? I thought most kids grew up on a diet of that! And I dunno how I missed that.....guess was not really initiated into the like......

Five7, Try and read GWTW.....Its a longgggg one but its worth it....Never did see WH, the movie...but I'll take ur word on the boring bit!!....U haven't read Eric Segul???? U must, if u r looking for some light reading.....Friendly advice from a 5 foot 6 incher :-)

Okay, I can see that a feeble attempt at humor failed - anyway, Lord Rama was born in the Ikshwaku dynasty, the line of the Sun (the other is the line of Chandra, the Moon). His father, King Dasharatha, ruled for 60,000 years (though I can't prove it) without a son, and then did a putrakameshthi yagna, which delivered whopping results - I mean, Lord Vishnu Himself was born to him, which makes him significantly more successful than I am likely to be when I try fatherhood. Lord Rama was born to destroy Ravana, who incidentally was His own doorkeeper, Jaya. I have often asked Lord Vishnu why He couldn't just send a thunderbolt down to kill Ravana and save Himself about 13,000 years of being around here (that's how long Lord Rama ruled), but He's so far preferred to keep to Himself.

To give you some comparative figures, Lord Krishna lived for 130 years on earth - the average life span decreases with yugas, apparently. Lord Rama was known for practising Dharma - He was not too much into preaching. Lord Krishna on the other hand preached, which makes Him the most popular of Lord Vishnu's avatars, nay, of all gods - He is the only god that mixed with the aam junta. Can you think of any other god (in the Hindu pantheon) that mixed with the ordinary people? Okay, maybe The Buddha, but He was too saintly compared to Krishna.

Arjuna and Krishna were, in their previous births, Nara and Narayana, both incarnations of Lord Vishnu Himself. Most ACK readers know only 10 avatars of Lord Vishnu - there are actually many more. One is Kapila Vasudeva, another is King Rishabha (there are more, I forget them). The former was a sage who preached Brahma Vidya for perhaps the first time. Rishabha was a king who was born when several sages did a mega-yagna for a king (I forget the name) with Lord Vishnu as the Yagna Purusha. And at the end of it the Lord Himself appeared, and the king asked for a son just like the Lord. The Lord replied that there can be no one like Him, and so offered to be born Himself to the king. Rishabha also preached the Brahma Vidya.

I know all this is pretty unstructured, but it was my ego :). Some more interesting figures:

1. The kruta yuga has 17,28,000 years.

2. The tretha yuga has 12,96,000 years.

3. The dwapara yuga has 8,64,000 years.

4. The kali yuga has 4,32,000 years.

(The mathematicians will note the relationships between the above figures.)

5. 4 yugas put together (43,20,000 years) form a Manvantara. 14 Manvataras form one day for Lord Brahma. This is the 7th Manvantara in Brahma's current day, and we are some 5000+ years into the Kali yuga.

6. At the end of every Manavatara, the entire universe disappears into Lord Vishnu's womb (including Lord Brahma and, I think, even Lord Shiva - the latter I just culled out from my logic, though it's a little difficult to fathom), and then He goes into a Yoga Nidra. Then it's, well, tomorrow :), and Lord Brahma is again born off the navel of Lord Vishnu. Lord Brahma then does penance for 1,000 years before He starts creation. Lord Shiva is apparently born out of Lord Brahma as part of this.

Doubts I will never get cleared:

1. Why all this

2. So the Ramayana, Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, all other tales in Hindu mythology that we have read, all happened in this Manvantara, in the earlier yugas. So what happened in the previous Manvantara? What happened when it was yesterday for Lord Brahma? Aren't the possibilities simply unimaginable? Was there mankind in the earlier Manvantara? Are we the special attraction just for this Manvantara?

Most of this info is not original (like it can be! :)). It's almost all come out of Kamala Subramaniam's Srimad Bhagavatham (Rs. 500, hardbound, most big bookstores, a Bhavan's publication). I think it's a must-read - it puts your perception of yourself in the appropriate perspective, and once you realize how insignificant you and your concept of yourself and all your great thoughts are in some other much much bigger scheme, a lot of things cease to matter, and you get what should be every man's only goal - equanimity of mind.

Srimad Bhagavatham is a must-read. It makes everything else seem so meaningless and immature. Fountainhead and all the issues it raises? Pooh! The answers are all here.

Never read the story you mentioned 57J. And its not like i've read too many either. But have a few fav in this category: Last Leaf, Confessions of a Humorist both by o'henry, Boule de Suif - maupassant ,

I am surprised that we do not have a mention of Three men in a boat. Though it was written like ages ago the humour is something you could relate to even today.

Also surprised that we also do not have any mention of Indian authors ?

interpretor of maladies

midnights children / satanic verses

suitable boy

god of small things

Some of our non details stuff :

Huckleberry fin

Pride and Prejudice

Tale of two cities

I could prolly go on and on but I guess its better to stop for now. BTW its quite a coincidence that we have good number of tall ladies here. Add one more to the 5'6"

HHH To Books!

by Happy Hyderabadi » Tue Mar 23, 2004 4:25 pm

Hip Hip Hooray to Books!

To the vast and delightful books like:

Barrister Parvatisam ( Telugu)

Ek Gadhe ki Sarguzashth / EGk Atma Katha (U / H of Kishan Chander)

You must add the countless English Books:

Les Miserables (for the Humane Father)

Roots (for Peaking Experience)

Anderson Tapes (for the Spell-Binding Suspense)

Sherlock Holmes (for the Extra-Ordinary Deductions)

Jeeves / Psmith / Empress of Blandings of PGW (for Humour / Excellent Vocabulary)

Don Quixote (Original ... for the happy Chivalry)

Gulliver's Travels (Original ... for the Variety of Wonders) ...

Most of the popular Books now are bulky: JBT and RKR, and hence forbidding to read. .... But must be absorbing reading.

Hence, I say HHH to Books!

Will check out your list.

My bad! Its "The First Seven Years" by Bernard Malamud. Of course you haven't heard about it! Oops. Check it out if you can: its about 16 pages long about a shoemaker.

I read Bronte and Jane Austen. Somehow I cannot read past the first page on any of Twain's works. I cannot understand his writing style? I don't know.

Mammujaan[aka azazel], I loved Night Shift and Different Seasons! The only de Maupassant I have read is The Necklace. A classic.
