well, fusion is not my speciality but did like Shakti, whatever little i have listened to..but it was mostly becoz of Mr. John 'guitar-god' Mclaughlin!

tho the others were also baaps of their respective instruments..

n Indian Ocean have become quite regular in my play-list these days.. they're not carnatic, but create some beautiful music..

Cheers

You make me jealous....

Heard about this story of a street in Chennai being named after MS?She refused asking those people to name after Pattamal.Great lady naa?

And Pavan yeah,I don't mind exchanging and everything(as long as you'd return them anyway  ),but the divine unison I've got are cassettes, not cds.

Pattamal...

by Pavan » Wed Mar 10, 2004 3:52 pm

Hi Ramya,

doesnt matter even if theyr cassettes...lets see how we can share them. But i think i can give u a copy of the CDs with me if u want, but from now on i suggest we start building a CD base..cos the clarity is great...doest get spoiled with time and is easily recordable at a very low price...and we can atleast play it on our computers if we dont have a CD player.

about pattamal...have u heard any of her songs...iv got a CD of hers with Dikshitar kritis. Shes very good...in fact that was my first CD of carnatic music. Its generous of Subbulakshmi to have asked them to rename the street after Pattamal but i think shes worth it and more. :) and abt Semmangudi...i knew abt him only after his passing away...n only then i started making a collection of his songs ..though very few...

n Mayavi..i was busy with my Management entrance exams... hope ur good...btw why have u orphaned the hyderabad_rocks group...im bugged up with the ads that r being posted in it...please have a look at it n weed out the offenders and change the membership to restricted.ppl who want membership can mail u.ok.

Morev later...keep in touch all of you...n desakshi..pls come back!!

Never heard Pattamal sing, but heard about her from my dad.I really wouldn't rate Semmangudi above MS or MBK(Dunno how well qualified Iam to say this anyway),I guess it's the problem with his diction.

You said management exams-CAT?

diction....

by Pavan » Tue Mar 16, 2004 11:11 am

wouldnt argue with u abt their relative merits..but i accept Semmangudis diction isnt very clear...but when hes singing the Swaram...his flow is like that of a river..i liked that...and also the aristocratic tinge in his voice. Even Desakshi has touched upon this fact that there r a number of singers who are not very clear in diction or who change the meaning by juggling the words ( RAMUNI TOKA!! see desakshi's post towards the beginning) but what i feel abt this is that most of these singers being Tamilians cannot usually get the Telugu right and it would be just as their Guru taught them, and u know its not very easy to learn a language that is not our mother tongue very easily and without minor flaws here n there...so we should not be very concerned abt that and only look for the beauty of their voice and raga...

what say guys??

...and yeah i was preparing for CAT..u too?

If aishwarya, then jolly good

Actually I know a ramya (not krishna, but I used to call her ramya krishna) who's into 'sastriya sangeetam'. She even gave a performance on DD. So was just curious.

Can anyone tell me the difference between 'Sahityam' and 'Sahiti'? What does sahityam actually mean?

Hi Guys.

Good to see the forum in swing again :)

Had a wonderful time in hyd... feel sad that my trip is short and lasted only 5 weeks :(

......

Mayavi Morpheus wrote:Can anyone tell me the difference between 'Sahityam' and 'Sahiti'? What does sahityam actually mean?

If my memory servers right! sAhiti is defined as 'sAhityAniki rUpAntaramu' - a.k.a a synonym of sAhityam....

sAhityamu itself is defined as 'mATala kaTTu' = a collection of words.

There may be more to the dictionary definition...if anyone have access to 'Sabdha ratnAkaram' [or the ever elusive Sabdha cintAmaNi - hail you!!!] please append.

In the context of this forum, sAhityamu is lyrics.... the words (maatu) that go with the tune(swaraalu or dhaatu) of a composition.

sAhitivEtta or sAkitikAruDu is the lyricist. In the early days, he is same as the swara karta or composer.

If you remember the AkASavANi announcements : "sangeetam ramesh nayudu, saahityam dEvulapalli" ... dont be confused... just like broken english, we have broken telugu, too  the verb is to be understood implicitly and should be supplied for grammatical completeness.

That's the sahityam for today

 you asked for it

recently I received a Jugalbandi album by Dr. BMK and Pt Joshi as a gift. Glad I did.. will be back with some thougts and feeling it raised

Let me leave you now with this caraNamu from annamayya padam 'manujuDai puTTi' ....

juTTeDu gaDupukai corani jOTlu cocci

paTTeDu gUTikai batimAli

puTTina cOTikE porali manasuveTTi

vaTTilaMpaTamu vadalanEraDu gAna

by Pavan » Thu Apr 08, 2004 7:41 pm

Good to have u back desakshi!! u seem to be an expert at language!!..good to have u around...

btw that song of Annamacharya(Manujudai putti) is one of my favorites n i keep listening to MS's rendition of that...nice philosophy...i think the advaita philosophy is an integral part of quite a few Annamacharya renditions..seeing the god in every one...this one and Brahmamokkate..etc...let the music fill our hearts...keep posting

Thanks Pavan. It sure is good to back amongst you good people 8)

Annamacarya's emphasis on 'tat tvam asi' is evident in many of his works. It is interesting to note that even back then in the 1300s', he was working hard to bring forth the message of universal brotherhood. It sure does not make any sense to draw lines between people when, at the end, it is all the same - dust! What matters ultimately is the Self that is the Parabrahma and we foolishly engage ourselves in battles of ego!!!

idEvishayam goMtu ciMcukoni marI pADaDu gadA 'bramamokkaTe' ani!!!

let me take the liberty to post another of annamayya kriti 'bhaktikoladi vADe paramAtmuDu' :

bhaktikoladi vADe paramAtmuDu - bhuktimukti tAne iccu bhuvi paramAtmudu

paTTinavAri cEbiDDa paramAtmuDu - baTTabayaTi dhanamu paramAtmuDu

paTTapagaTi velugu paramAtmuDu - eTTaeduTanEvunnADidE paramAtmuDu

paccipAlalOna veNNa paramAtmuDu - baccenavAsina rUpu paramAtmuDu

baccucEti voragallu paramAtmuDu - iccakoladivADupO I paramAtmuDu

palukulalOni tETa paramAtmuDu - phaliyiMcu niMdaRiki paramAtmuDu

balimi SrIvEMkaTAdri paramAtmuDu - elamijIvulaprANa mI paramAtmuDu

I think this was set to rAmakriya....

(looks like I am still recovering from post-hyd-visit-depression-syndome  :-) lol)
