Rowling rules

by Ramya » Thu Feb 26, 2004 8:24 am

Any Tolkien and Rowling fans out here?

With LOTR coming into town soon...Iam really looking forward to see the movie,I really don't think that anybody else would have presented Tolkien any better.

And Iam actually looking forward to read the 6th book of the Harry Potter series, loved the Order of the Phoenix.

I'm a fan........more Tolkien's than Rowling.

Although I'm skeptical about you "no one cud have sont it better" comment.

I wonder how it would have been if Tim Burton had made the movie.

Not to take anything away from Peter Jackson, the LOTR movies make the dissapointment of the Matrix movies worth bearing.

No seriously, he's a good director. Watch out for his next movie "King Kong".

About the books though, I have to say that I found Potter 5 to be extremely boring. I guess JK Rowling thinks that she's gonna be the next TOlkien and went into unnecessary trouble, or it was just another way of making money.

And to all the JRR fans.....who's you're fav character in the book?

Mine are the Rohirrim.

Errr... I'm actually quite zapped to see JK Rowling and JRR Tolkien talked about as if they're in the same league. Don't get me wrong, I'm quite fond of Harry Potter. I just don't think Rowling is a patch on Tolkien. Then again, that 's just my opinion. Also, I think I preferred '... Goblet of Fire' to '...Order of the Phoenix'. I think Rowling tried a little too hard in portraying Harry as going through the pangs of adolescence. And the whole thing about Dumbledore crying in the end was a little... pathetic.

Dunno if anyone could have done better with the LOTR movies, but I definitely think they aren't great. The first part was pretty decent, I have to say, but the complete parody they made out of the second was really sad. I admit the battle scenes were superbly done, but central characters like Faramir and Treebeard were made mincemeat of! I know, I know, I've said all this in another board as well, but I just can't help saying it :)

SO, if the second part is anything to go by, and the horror stories I've heard about the third are true, I'm not going to pin a load of hopes on it.

Difficult question. I'm tied between Treebeard and Saruman (Saruman's just so consistently evil, and so scathing in his repartees, that you just can't help loving him ;) )

i dont know abt the characterization, but i found the second part very well made and entertaining.

your disillussionment is coz u musta read the novel first. that always makes movies seem disappointing. i had read jurassic park novel first and the movie was somewhat disappointing for me.

thats the magic of the printed word!

really? i have read quite good reviews of it and how its doing best of all in the trilogy. i am actually looking forward to it. wanna see it at Sangeet before it closes :(

abt Potter series, i admire em only coz they r well made technically and very entertaining. havent read the novels yet.

tolkien was the greatest there ever was at painting broad landscapes.......and nobody absolutely nobody cld have brought that out better than peter jackson........tim burton is a decent pretender but he is not in the same league.....

as for the movies themselves....i think all 3 parts have been extremely well-made.......think abt it this way....when u were reading the book , have u ever imagined treebeard and figured out how the ent mite look like in ur imagination...and when u finally saw it on the screen, wasnt it better than all ur fantasies put together......if u feel the same way abt it, i am sure u will understand jackson's genius

as for the fav character, gotta be gollum........simply the star of the show

Tell me Jethro, did you ever hear of Peter Jackson before LOTR? He made some obscure horror movie and when he felt that his life wasnt going anywhere, he took the idea to all the studios which refused to entertain his "dream" clssifying him as yet another "AWD" (autuers with dreams).

Ohk, he made that movie The Frighteners, but that's it. Look at Tim Burton.......Batman, Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow etc.

Anyway, I like the way lotr has turned out, so peace.

First things first-I really like Aragorn-I actually like him much more in the books than as Viggo Mortenson.I also like Gandalf, for me Gandalf is much like Dumbledore, may be the other way around actually.

I agree with Jaszalcatraz there, never heard of Peter Jackson before, but still I stick to what I said-it's like this-when you really like something, you wouldn't really want them to be changed, would you?

As far as Rowling is concerned,I donot care to compare her with Tolkein,I mean Tolkein created his own world, the middle earth,Rowling actually has it much easier,Hogwarts after everything is just a school.

The biggest reason why I admire Rowling is the way she develops her plot.In the Goblet of Fire,I couldn't have dreamt that Moody would be the death eater, and in the OotP,I still am surprised that Sirius is dead. But then after I know what has happened,it seems that the thing was pretty obvious.

Lotr and Hp

by Shayam » Fri Mar 05, 2004 3:27 pm

Great to see that there are some LOTR fans around. Sa to note that there are only few of them.

Well.. I like every character in LOTR. But really, if you take the entire epic into consideration, The characters in the first age are far superior to the ones in the third age.

There are a lot of similarities between LOTR and HP series. I like both of them.

POA is my favorite book of all he HP series. My only complaint on Rowling is she is really harassing me with the lengthy intervals between each book.

I hope Return of the King will be good. I liked the first two movies also.

They did a decent job of a difficult book.

All ye Rowling fans there,do you think that the movies are as good as the books.I don't think so.Infact I wonder how would the GoF look on the screen.

Shyam:

I agree that LOTR and HP have a lot in common ,but I really hope that Snape wouldn't turn out to be Gollum.I kind of like Snape after the OotP.

Havn't read any of the LOTRs but thought the movies were amazing. However u get the feeling they were only trailers of what the books are actually abt. just tiny fleeting glimpses. Mebbe these movies weren't really made for those who've already read the books. Mebbe they have been made as teasers for those still uninitiated to the magic of tolkein. Lets call it The Tolkein Awareness Campaign. From that angle the trilogy definately worked coz i'm just itching to get my hands on those books.

Read all the Harry Potters. Thought the movies were torturingly boring.

Makes you wonder if there have been any books, at all, that have made a better watch than read. i mean mebbe its not possible to get the movies to the books quality. Its just one man's perception of the book. You cant expect it to match everyother's.

Besides the thrill of a movie lies in whatever little suspense thats there abt the climax. In an adapted screen play you dont have that. So you just have to settle for the cinematography, acting etc. you have to look at it as art.

anyway my favourite characters :

LOTR - Sam. If you have a friend like that there is nothing you cant achieve or better yet , if yo u are a friend like that your debt the the world has been more than fulfilled.

Harry Potter - Serious Black. Damn sexy that man is ! was really heartbroken when he fell thru that cutain in OotP.

PS : dont you think the chinese/japnese subcripts in Return of King at Prasads were really annoying. i felt really cheated coz hey, i didnt pay for that!
I dont suffer from insanity, i enjoy it !

Agreed, boss. No movie has ever impressed as much as a book, but the LOTRs are pretty good, though as you said, they've missed out on some real good parts of the books.

My fav character from HP would be Lupin,I don't why but I simply like him-he's so good and strong in his own silent way.

But watching a movie first and then reading the books deprives you a few pleasures-you cannot let your imagination soar
