Celloloid Geniuses (Bollywood and Tollywood keep out)

by Jaszalcatraz » Sat Jan 10, 2004 5:37 pm

Trying to revive an older post here. Lets talk about all the great pieces of cinema. First lets begin by naming them.

Let me first begin by paying respect to the Gods of our time. Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, Paul Thomas Anderson, David Lynch, Guy Ritchie.

Let me now pay respect to the greats of my Dad's generation. (BTW I'm 20)

Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Stanley Kubrick, Francis Ford Coppola, Oliver Stone, Terrence Malick etc

With so many gods, this is no differnt from the Hindu Panthoen is it?

Anyway, apologies to all the ppl who feel disgusted (and want to smack me) for putting writing the names of greats alongside the not-so-greats. But remember, we're movie fans first and fans of individual directors later. Let us stand together in this torrent of bullshit being thrown at us (referring to Mass movies here). I enjoy them, but I'm sure you will agree when I say, I have to switch off most of my brain when I'm watching them.

Now that I have made my intentions clear (to those who didnt get it yet, do not continue), let me continue.

Ppl still here? Good.

First of let me name a few great movies. PLease reply with additions. Also reply to the question at the end of my post.

Shawshank Redemption

Godfather

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Usual Suspects

Rear Window

A Clockwork Orange

Dr Strangelove

Goodfellas

Clerks

Casablanca

Magnolia

Godfather

Cidade De Deus

Platoon

LA Confidential

North By Northwest

Citizen Kane

and many more

BTW I havent taken this list off http://www.imdb.com

I actually own all these movies.

And now for the question.

Do you think QT sold-out to the Studio system by making us pay twice to see the same film? (Kill Bill Vol 1 and Vol 2).

(BTW if anybody wants to talk only abt movies all night long, add me to ur yahoo messenger, type ur fav movie in the message box....my id is jaszalcatraz.

Hey zaphodbeeblebrox4242 and beatzophreniac......i added you guys but none of you seem to reply. Anyway, I hope you read this and keep the this discussion board alive.

The fullhyd guys put this board on the homepage and probably due to inactivity removed it.

So the question for now is......which is the most underrated and overrated movie that you know?

To me, the most underrated movie ( I can think of) is Tigerland.

Most overrated is Run Lola Run.

Hey Jethro,

I may be mistaken, but your ID seems indicative of a healthy interest in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe and other sundry selections from Douglas Adams' Trilogy of Five. Been wondering where all the sci-fi buffs have disappeared to in this world. Perhaps they've been kidnapped by the Vogons. Hmmm. Can just about imagine Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz envisioning Torture by Boredom in his blob of a brain...

dude, this is Khader..
as regards ur Q abt QT selling out to the studio system;
i think its the best thing that could've happened to us "Movie Buffs"..
not only does this make sure we see the entire movie as we were meant to..i mean no cuts n deleting scenes just to fit it into one movie!
n im pretty sure that QT wouldn't sucker us into watchin the SAME movie more than twenty times..since ive already seen Vol.1 12 times n am pretty sure that 'til Vol.2 arrives in April, i'd have seen it over 20 times..
we can have that talk abt great movies when we meet-up

Dunno man. It's been a while at this end too :) My bro's got the omnibus, but my sister-in-law filched it from me before I could finish 'Mostly Harmless' :( And now they're in the US and I can't find the complete omnibus here, more's the pity. But Adams was a genius when it cames to names, what with Zaphod, Marvin and Slartibartfast making the rounds, not to mention Vogon Jeltz and whatsisname the 'Infinitely Prolonged' :D What was his name, he big green dude who was so bored with being immortal that he went around insulting every living being in the universe in alphabetical order?

"Arthur Dent?"

"Yes?"

"Arthur Philip Dent?"

"Yes?"

"You're a jerk, Dent! A complete a**hole!!"

Ahem ahem ...

the discussion here has somehow drifted off from movies to books , which though is quite natural coz thats where most good movies from books ... but lemme bring you back from the tangent to the circle ...

First question to Jazs ... was menioning The Godfather twice just a typo or were you trying to be emphatic about how much u like it ? uhhh basically thats it :D . Though this reminds of a reference to the book the in 'You've got male ' ...' the ' IChing' was it ... anybody liked that movie ? Now dont tell me that romantic comedies are beneath you ... c'mon!

i have a coupla movies i'd like to suggest for the list .. donno if they come in the greats category or not .. though they are personal favourites ..here goes :

Life is Beautiful , Roberto bengini ( hope spelt that right)

Fight Club [big Brad Pitt fan :D]

Ocean's 11

Forrest Gump

Lock,Stock and 2 smoking barrels

The Matrix [ Any movie that has been so perfectly thought and the creators put in so much effort deservse a position here , dont you think?!]

Lord Of the Rings [ Absolute Eye Candy ]

Some funny oddball movies with absolutely silly characters

thursday

the big hit

a pyromaniacs lovestory

out of sight

And an Animatin movie [ tho i'm really 20 , my brain develops 1/4 the normal rate :P ]

Monster's Inc

I rate my movies on the basis of the number of times i can watch them ... makes sense to me . Feel free to stone ... or even better agree with me !!!

hi dude,

i agree with u that the movies u have mentioned [or some of 'em] do have multiple-viewing qualities but im afraid wont qualify as great movies 'cept maybe Fight Club , LOTR n The Matrix ofcourse

I'd only agree with 'Fight Club' being in the list. I think as far the 'Matrix' and LOTR movies are concerned, only the first of each series was worth watching. The rest were, and I quote the desi guy in 'Office Space', "a SUCK!"

i think thats what i posted, only The Matrix was there..no Reloaded or Revolutions..though Reloaded was a very good continuation..upped the ante in just about every aspect..story, action, philosophy...too bad Revolutions fukked it up..

LOTR , i think has to b there just because its soo well made..n i cant see why u thought the Two Towers was bad..havent seen the ROTK so cant comment on that...

Man, have you read the books? If you haven't then I don't blame you for liking the movies, because they're definitely visual treats. Unfortunately, the movies don't stay true to the books as written by Tolkien. It wasn't all the bad in the first part, but the second and, from what I hear, the third part, involved much too much 'creative liberty' for my tastes. Case in point: the characters of Faramir and Fangorn (Treebeard) were reduced to total idiocy, while the book portrays them as incredibly important in the whole sceme of the story. Galadriel was pretty sad too :) But, cribs apart, I think Gollum was done REALLY well!

Point taken dude..

havent read the books yet..but im sure it'll not only b a treat but also downgrade the movie version..coz i doint think its is ever possible to replicate a good novel onto the big screen..but whatever creative liberties or otherwise Peter Jackson n the gang took..they still came thru on top..i dont think it could've been made ne better than it was..

again, i dont think novels, esp. classics can live up to the huge expectations when translated on the screen..

sorry, 10th on my list is "Saving Private Ryan"

I think I should justify MY list. GBU is my all time favourite. Godfather - I don't think I need to explain. Scarface(1980) is a masterpiece. If you think Godfather trilogy is Al Pacino's best, go watch Scarface. Specially, the final scenes where he shouts "I'm Tony Montana, You F**k with me, you f**kin' with the best" is brilliantly crafted by Brian DePalma. Die Hard - best action flick ever made. Still leaves my adrenalin pumping. Indy and Last Crusade is one of the few movies which got comedy/action/sentiment excellently poured in. Goodfellas is not the best gangster movie, but it's worth watching, given, you can bear the cursings of Joe Pesci. Raging Bull, the story of boxer Jake LaMotta, is undoubtedly Scorsese's best. I bet you won't recognize a 60 pound heavier DeNiro. Outlaw Josey Wales is one hell of a cowboy movie by the great Clint Eastwood(I'm a biiig Clint fan). Rocky - inspirational. Saving Private Ryan - best warmovie ever....

Grinning from ear to ear

by Jaszalcatraz » Thu Feb 12, 2004 10:19 pm

So there I was 10 days after I started this message board. I couldnt find any replies. All I saw were "bump to top"'s and a lone "nudge". I packed my bags and moved to HSX.com. Cut-to-present. My friend azazel mentions this board to me. I come here for a peep and maybe another "bump to top" and what do I see???

REPLIES

YAY!!

Thanx people for keeping this board alive, lets get in some more authentic movie buffs into this game. Like I said, add me to you messengers and we'll talk.

For the moment, lets talk about the above posts.

There was talk about Peter Jackson's Lotr not being faithful to JRR's LOTR.

In my friend's (word to popesmokesdope) words "I've read it, loved it and lived it" and then came them movies.

What those movies essentialy did was to bring Tolkien back into the world's memore....morelike catapulted him there. So off all the people who've seen the movie, I'm sure a small percentage will go home and read the book. So, finally, the book wins.

As pertains Messrs Andy and Larry Wachowski.........FUKK THEM.

4 damn years of my life I lay in wait for the third part and they feed me this piece of crap? Easily the 9th greatest Sci-Fi flick, Matrix had the makings of being our generation's Star Wars, and what does they go and do?

As pertains Tony Montana, easily De Palma's best. But not Pacino's that honor goes to Serpico (IMHO).

As pertains Rocky.......Part one was good, part two was bearable, part three was uneccessary, part four was.....you get the picture.

Finally I would like the citizens of HYD to applaud God's gift to movie buffs in HYD, Cinema Paradiso.

Unfortunately they're too expensive, but remember, "We shall overcome".

I had to say this before leaving, To all the Tarantino fans out there.....congrats.......the man is contemplating on making a Vega Brothers movie.
