Calvin and Hobbes - The Greatest Comic Strip EVER!

Bill Watterson's idea of creating a comic strip about a spoilt but incredibly insightful and imaginative six year-old and his stuffed tiger adds another dimension to the much-used word 'genius'.



The Calvin and Hobbes cast of characters:



Calvin - The spoilt, selfish, easy-to-identify-with six year-old

Hobbes - His stuffed tiger that his imagination brings to life whenever there's no one else around and, more often than not, is the embodiment of Calvin's conscience

Calvin's Mom - The harassed caretaker of the house who keeps her sanity even when Calvin seems to need huge amounts of Tuna fish with which to bait his Tiger traps

Calvin's Dad - The resigned-to-his-fate lawyer whose life is bad enough without having Calvin calling him up at work and telling him what a wonderful day it is

Susie - Calvin's nieghbour and classmate, whom Calvin takes sadistic pleasure in pelting with snowballs and other sundry projectiles (I'm of the opinion that one of the reasons he does this is that he has a secret crush on her)

Miss Wormwood - Calvin's class teacher, who metamorphoses into an alien whenever Calvin's mind wanders

Yep, the book on the Tenth Anniversary was a very special publication. Gave a lot on info on the characters as well as story behind many of the popular strips.

Whenever the topic turns to Calvin and Hobbes, my friends and I spend hours regaling each other with our favourite strips. Wonder if that happens to normal people too



I think Bill Watterson has made a profound difference in people's lives by giving the world Calvin and Hobbes (which seems to have a cult following wherever one looks). It's a real pity that he stopped coming up with new ones. But, what the hell, it's still great fun to read through all the old ones. I just got 'It's a Magical World' and I think I've read it thrice already!



Maybe we should start a Calvin and Hobbes fan club. Hmmmm....

Even I was of the opinion that Bill Watterson stopped way before time.



I particularly like the dialog between Calvin and Hobbes in the woods with wagon wheel. Very subtle, intelligent and meaningful yet easy to relate to. Also the art-work is of great quality. I am never bored reading this again and again. Wondered if it was just me.



I have quite a few.. maybe we could exchange em sometimes. Too bad I actually gifted the Tenth Anniv edition (in the hope of converting a person who actually thinks "cartoons and comics arent for grown-ups"). Didnt like parting with it one bit,



In case you didnt know, the last strip had Calvin saying "Its a Magical World out there Hobbes ol buddy! Lets go exploring"

Am way ahead of you, AP. Been getting my daily dose of Calvin and Hobbes from ucomics for at least a year now



I wonder if it's just me, but I keep thinking of people who don't like CnH as being a tiny bit less intelligent than those of us who do. Maybe I'm biased and elitist, or maybe I've just been influenced by Calvin's egotism but I can't help think that sometimes... Maybe they're just a different life form altogether (Spaceman Spiff uses his Deathray Blaster to vapourise the dreaded scum beings of planet Zog!!)

Well Fiddler, I don't think so...I think it's the other way round. People who don't like Calvin and co need some serious therapy . And if only we could, it wouldn't be such a bad idea to line em up and send them to Zong ..

C n H is one of my fave comix too...the insightful quotes and subtle meanings, all laced with humour, just blow my mind!



Another similar comic i enjoy is Dilbert. Its too close to corporate reality!



As far as humour goes i feel Asterix is also top class.

Bill Waterson faught to keep his product off Coffee mugs and tee-shirst , he kept his beautiful creation from endorsements ... so he's not a sell out , right ! He preserved the sanctity of his characters for his readers ... his fans ... us .

So isn't it imperitive that we return the good turn ?! By buying the masterpeics from a bookstore by shelling out money from our pockets ( no matter how hard earned it is , makes the possesion more valueble ... its worth it ! ) .

Sorry i'm being such a partypooper ... if it were me i'd definately do anything to get my hand on that CD ... but its juat a lil passing thought .

well...i have tried to keep myself away from those ppl who still use calvin to sell their t-shirts and mugs and whatever else they mite be selling....and even more so frm the ppl who think they r making a statement by wearing calvin shirts...

but the truth of the matter is that though i wld like to buy his books, they are expensive and prohibitively so......i wld rather have a free cd than help some middlemen make money off waterson's genius.......sorry dude but its economics and i try to do the best i can
