telugu pride!!

by 77thpunk » Thu Dec 25, 2003 7:43 am

i had a feeling that telugu people in general and guys in particular are sort of embarassed to let others know that they are telugus, especially in the US..
they are not exactly proud of their language, they dont exactly brag about their language or even in hyderabad..telugu is like a faint candle ready to go out..
u can thrive in hyd without knowing a bit of telugu..every where in hyd u go and talk in telugu..somebody proudly and arrogantly says\"telugu nai aata..\"..i am like..what the bloody hell are you thinking of yourselves...living in this land not knowing the lingo...
does anybody feel the same way....or is it just me??!!

the fact that many Hyderabadies do not speak telugu does not mean that they are all embarrassed abt their telugu knowledge.
historically hyderabad has been a city dominated by muslim culture. it has been a citadel of Urdu and Dakhni (the so called Hyderabadi \'Hindi\'). that is why since time immemorial most of the people here, muslims or otherwise, are used to speaking in urdu/dakhni/hindi rather than in telugu. even many hydbadis whose mother-tongue is telugu, think in urdu/dakhni/hindi.
It is also a fact that Hyderabad is cosmopolitan compared to rest of AP. u can find people from all over india here and so, Hindi becomes a link for everyone. only people from rayalaseema and andhra regions prefer to speak in Telugu since they are more comfortable with that.
many non-telugus (like me) do know how to read and write telugu but are not very fluent in speech.

about NRI telugus i have no idea, but i have heard from many friends in US that a main complaint about people from AP are they form groups in offices and converse loudly in Telugu, oblivious to the non-Telugu colleagues\' discomfiture. while its not exactly good etiquette, this definitely does not any indicate lack of pride in the mother tongue.
wtf? i no longer care if my posts hurt yr feelings
Many Telugu people I know certainly take pride in their language and culture. But not to the extent that it could be called fanatic. In fact I met a person who was happier talking in Telugu but then the Telugu spoken had a pronounced Telangana accent that both of us agreed to speak in Hindi for the remainder of the conversation.

Would it be comfortable if you had all the people speak only Telugu and people visiting from another state having difficulty shopping, commuting, etc.

If we were like Tamilians(generally speaking)who would not allow anything thats remotely connected to HIndi in their state. I mean how is a person who doesnt know Tamil get their way around in the state.

An incident that amused me. Was in Bangalore recently and was boarding an auto, asked him in Hindi if he would take me to a certain place. He didnt know Hindi but asked me if I chose to speak in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or Malyalam he would understand. Goes to show the basic purpose of language is to communicate and not to assert a pride in our languages.

\"If we were like Tamilians(generally speaking)who would not allow anything thats remotely connected to HIndi in their state. I mean how is a person who doesnt know Tamil get their way around in the state.\"

I was in Japan, and they wouldn\'t speak a word of English/Swahili/Norwegian!!!! I mean, how is a person who doesn\'t know Japanese to get his/her way around in their country? Am I right? No, I guess. From your Bangalore experience, you were lucky to know one of the languages he listed. If that was not the case, what options would you have had? Would you have faulted him for not knowing the languages that you knew (as you have done in the case of Tamilians)? When it is the norm for any traveller to any part of the world to try and speak the local language (or a common language), why is that visitors to Tamil Nadu alone expect the poor locals to know their tongue?

God bless the Japanese as well as the Tamilians!!

Just wondering if you knew Swahili or Norwegian too :)

And so much for language barriers!! When in Rome do as Romans do ... probably would have also had to add \"When in Rome speak as the Romans do\".

Also I probably got a little carried away to the neighbouring states ..and that too knowledge of the local language/dialect would help mostly when travelling.

But 77thpunk did rightly point out that some Telugu people prefer not to speak in Telugu even when an occasion would warrant it. They also are embarassed to admit they from \"Gultu\"land. I really wonder why ....
