Best One day Internation Match of the year

by Singamsetty Rajesh » Tue Dec 23, 2003 9:16 pm

Hi, floks I am back again to split my views, especially for the Cricket lovers, I have a question. Which match do you think the Best Match of the Year

For a few days now I have been thinking of Lance Klusener and his suicidal run for glory at Edgbaston. That stunning mix-up with Allan Donald cost the Proteas a berth in the World Cup 1999 final.

It will, perhaps, never be known which invisible hand nudged Klusener, who had played his heart out through the tournament to single-handedly haul the South Africans to the semi-final, to exile common sense and make that dash, or which voice commanded Donald to not see that his partner was charging down.
Just one run was needed for a win, and one would have assumed that with three balls to go and one wicket in hand, the pair would have been a little judicious.

But no. South Africa had to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory; the match had to end in a tie; and the Aussies had to win the Cup.

What to do? Such is life.

But Klusener, who orchestrated that Thursday calamity, was made of stern stuff. His most profound observation about that event -- So what? No one died -- has become part of cricket folklore.

What that reply shows about the man is what I have thought of often, and is what I have been thinking of for the past few days.

Was he a heartless man? Possibly. Was he an arrogant man? Possibly. Was he a self-centred man who didn\'t give a fig? Possibly.

A more charitable view, which many subscribe to, is that he really didn\'t realise what the fuss was about. For him, it was just a game that ended badly. There was no cause for the whole nation to go into mourning.

So, In my opinion This is the ODI of the year.
The best ODI of which year are you talking about? And looking at MM\'s post above, I assume that rediff hasn\'t published an article on the Best ODI of years 2000-2003.

Anyways...lets not spoil the spirit in which this thread was created. My vote for the best ODI of the year would go to one of these 2 matches :

1.India v/s Sri Lanka, Super Six, World Cup 2003.
If we had to describe the match in one word, the word would be DECIMATION. Thats exactly what India did to the emerald isle team. Starting with a blitzkrieg on the hapless lankan bowlers by the Sachin-Sehwag due.....and culminating in one of the fiercest displays of attacking fast bowling ever by an Indian team, Srinath, Zaheer and Nehra put paid to any desire the Lankans might have had of putting up a fight.

2. India v/s Pakistan, Pool B, World Cup 2003.
The boys did it once more....that too in style. Keeping up with the tradition of never having lost a world cup match to the pakis, the indians once again gave a nice taste of some Desi Ghee. Well done India.

The pick is yours.

Cant agree with you anymore. The India-pakistan world cup match was the best i\'ve ever seen. Unfortunately I missed the first half of that match, pakistans batting, as I was tied up with something very important (Mardigras LOL).
Its always fun to watch pakistan being thrashed.

The literal meaning of the word Decimation, is the absolute destruction of one entity by another. The origins can be traced back to the roman era, when mutinies were quelled by killing every tenth person in the army.

Talking of decimation, the World Cup final was dominated by Australia....though India had its chances. I wouldn\'t really call it decimation. What happened in our super six match against Lanka was complete superiority of the Indians over the Lankans. Hence the term decimation.

As for the TVS cup final, I would really like to know what standards you applied when you called a 35 run victory decimation. Enlighten me, Sir!

Well, the final margin is no consolation n doesn\'t mask the hiding the Aussies gave the Indians. This is just in the recently concluded TVS cup.

As for the world cup, there cudn\'t be a more apt occassion to use the word. Rigt from the first over of the game when they got 10 odd runs, to the last out of the Indian innings, it was Aus. India had it\'s chances? - u\'r kiddin me right dude?

For me, the best ODI should be the IND-PAK match in the World Cup.

1) DECIMATION doesnt mean that we are best & we dont give others a chance.

2) The definition of the best is not one-side Domination.

The above two points makes me to go against theat match between IND-SL.

The two sides playing should have equal chances & also the team which won should won it against some difficult situations. Then that match will be considered as the "BEST".

IND-PAK match has all the above qualities.

1)First Pak scored over 275 . In that pressure situation, its a very very good score. So pressure was on india.

2)India got upto a good start.Sachin is superb. Pressure was on Pakistan.

3)Again after the dismissal of Sehwag & Saurav in successive balls, pressure came back to Indian side.

4) But Sachin & Kaif palyed & Consolidated well. Pressue went back to Pakistan.

5) But SAchin & kaif out immediately, pressure came back to INdia.

In this situation, anythign can happen. Both teams have equal chances.

Then The great wall do INdia "Dravid" & Young Sensation "Yuvraj" made sure that India wins an historic ODI.

Both teams had the equal chance & the luck have really circulated equally to the both sides.

So this was the "BEST ONE DAY INTERNATIONAL " of the Year in my opinion.

:P :P :P :P :P
