Taliban officials said their fighters killed a Pakistani engineer in southern Afghanistan this week and accused two kidnapped Indian workers of being intelligence agents who were likely to be killed.Pakistani engineer Anwar Shah was killed and another Pakistani wounded when a group of armed men ambushed their car on Monday, while the two Indians were abducted from a US-funded road project on Saturday, 280 km from Kabul. Mullah Sabir Momin, the Taliban’s deputy operations commander in the south, said Shah was killed because he was an American agent.“We have repeatedly said that no work should be done in Afghanistan in the presence of Americans,” he said. The Taliban commander said: “It does not matter whether those involved in such works are engineers, drivers, doctors or others. Anyone who assists America or the Afghan government is liable to death. American agents will not be spared even if they are Muslims. Mullah Abdul Samad, a Taliban intelligence official, said the two abducted Indians, a soil sampler named Murali and a foreman named Vardharai, were Indian intelligence agents.Samad said documents and maps had been found on the Indians which showed they were involved in blasts on the Afghan-Pakistan border“They were monitoring the activities of the Taliban in Afghanistan and collecting information about the hideouts of the Taliban,” he said.
Samad said a final decision about the two Indian engineers would be taken by the Taliban leadership, but added: “I think there is a great possibility that they will be killed.”
It is frightening to see such growth of the taliban and other fanatical religious rebels all over again.
