Interview Tips

by Singamsetty Rajesh » Mon Nov 17, 2003 5:38 pm

\"We will get you back….\"
What does it mean ???

Hi, I Singamsetty Rajesh, has experience of attending a lot of interviews, so based on that experience I would like to publish this series of articles for the next couple of weeks. So, at this end of the article I hope that one acquires good knowledge for attending interviews, and to prepare a good resume, I am very thankful to the editor for giving me this opportunity.

Have you ever wondered why most of the interviewers say that \"We will get you back….\", which almost means that you are rejected. Why it is happening like this ?, I will tell you why , its probably because your resume. Always remember that the first impression is the last impression. Here the first impression means the resume, the resume says 25% of you. There is a saying that “Ghar kho dekh kar, ghar ki bahurani kho pehchan sakthe hain”, by seeing you resume the interviewer can assess you.

On an average our state produces one lakh graduates, among them 25% go for higher studies, 25% opt for some business, and the remaining 50% candidates go in search of jobs (The figures are roughly estimated). I really pity the folks who go out in the hot sun for the interviews, where most of them are told \"We will get you back….\", which almost means that you are rejected.

However, the Interviewers are not to be blamed for this, because they want to pick up the best of the best candidates for their organization, so who are to be blamed for that?
Its we, we have to blame ourselves, I will tell you why? Every morning when we look up the news paper for the jobs, and if we find any advertisement as \"Wanted Graduates aged 19-25 years with good communication skills, salary 5000/-\". There will be hundreds of youth turning up. They are least interested to know what kind of job they are applying for and they are not at all bothered to know about the company.

Now lets see some Important to build a good weightage resume……

**Some of the tips have been extracted from the net

1. USE ATTRACTIVE FORMATTING

Five minutes. That\'s all you have to grab the reader\'s attention and market yourself effectively. You can achieve this with attractive formatting.

The key is to have a good balance of white space and text. Your résumé should not look empty, nor should it overwhelm the reader with text. Keep margins of at least 1\" on all sides (some companies may still keep your résumé \"on file\" i.e. in three-ring binders). Make the résumé readable by using a minimum of a 10-point font for text and 11-point for headings. Use, at most, three levels of formatting (normal text, bold, and italics) or else it will distract the reader. Remember, although you want to get the reader\'s attention, do so with communicative titles and descriptions rather than with fancy fonts and graphics.

A badly formatted résumé will look sloppy. If you submit such a document, you might as well forget about the interview.

2. COVER THE BASICS
The key point here is to not complicate matters for the reader. They should be able to obtain all pertinent information about you without moving from their chair (yes, it sounds ludicrous, but that\'s how it needs to be). So, make sure that your résumé contains the following information.

Contact Information like name, address, phone/fax numbers, and email address.

Objective. A single statement should sum up your goals.

Education. If you\'ve graduated recently and want to highlight it, place education before the experience and skills section and list your coursework. Education should always be listed in reverse chronological order. Assuming that you have an undergraduate degree, do not list your high school education since it is irrelevant.

Work Experience. Again, this must be listed in reverse chronological order, and must include the company title, location, timeframe of work there, responsibilities and projects. More on this later.

Publications, Patents, and Awards. (if any) List these or anything else that is relevant to your job function in this section. If you have many publications and patents, consider listing them on a separate page and attach it to your résumé.

Computer Skills. This section can include hardware, software, programming language, and operating system experience. It\'s not necessary to include everything, but do make sure you list a few critical items which can be caught by résumé tracking software.

Other Skills and Activities. This section can be used to show that you are a well-rounded individual. It can include membership in industry-related societies. Keep it short, general, and avoid controversial hobbies or pastimes.
If you have many years of experience, you can also provide a summary of your skills before the \"Experience\" and \"Education\" sections.
And finally Should you fold your resume?
Don\'t fold a laser-printed resume right along a line of text. The \"ink\" could flake off along the fold.
So, folks next weeks we will learn more thing about the personal interviews, what to speak, what to wear, how to convince, what to ask and how to present your self and more importantly how to answer the killer question “Tell about your self”.

To be continued…

Interview Tips

Dear Rajesh, agreed, that you mention that some of the tips are \"extracted\" from the net. But don\'t you think that if you instead provided us the original source link(s), you would have saved a lot of your time and efforts! You could as well use this time and your creative powers for even more creative writings. After all, you aren\'t adding anything to these \"extracted\" parts but for adding a word here and there (like \"if any\"). Same is the case with your other posting \"Vision 2020\". I am sure you can do a better job than mere cut and paste especially as you claim some editor has given you this exciting opportunity of writing a series of articles. We will be awaiting some very original contributions from you since you have promised more to come in this series and not mere amalgamation or mishmash of two or more sources!

And for those of you who can\'t wait till Rajesh \"extracts\" from various sources on the net, check the URL http://www.graduatingengineer.com/interview/ It also includes the tips presented here which Rajesh has taken great pains to “extract”.

BTW guys, check this source http://www.resumemaker.com/ There are several sample resumes and sample letters covering almost all fields. You don\'t have to log-in also to access these sample materials. Its pretty good.

And Rajesh, I am not aware of any interviewer saying “We will get you back”. What they usually say is “We will get back to you”. At first, I thought it was a typo and ignored but since you have repeated it again, I am assuming it’s some sort of lingo (though it sounds quite odd) in certain professions or certain parts of the world.

What has really helped me is reading the \"Magic of thinking big\" before the interview. I landed every interview with major companies after reading this book. Worked for me. May or may not work for you.
I dont do too much technical browsing (but i\'m already good technically - not to brag).

There\'s nothing such as \"advices\". \'Advice\' is plural. Also, I\'ve noticed people use \"advise\" and \"advice\" interchangeably. Thats not grammatically right. Eg \"She advised me that it was better to choose the 2nd option\", \"Her advice to me was that I should choose the 2nd option\". Just noticed this, so I\'ve posted it. No offence meant to anyone.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you are right.

Interview Tips

Rajesh,

We\'ll get back to you doesn\'t at all mean the candidate is rejected. In fact, if the employer offers the position right after the interview, then I would be skeptical about the interviewer, because I think, no matter how good the candidate is, employer needs to do some some due diligence besides what he finds out in the interview. For example; back ground checks etc.

Also, 5 minutes is long time for someone to look at your resume for the first time. At least in USA, hiring managers take a glance of 10-20 seconds in the first round and if he/she likes it, only then he will look at it in detail in second round.

yaa faheem i totally agree with you that 10-20 second are more than enough for the Interviews to study the candidate.

But, i have mentioned the time as 5 minutes after the surveying few people.

One more thing is as i said, \"we will get you back\" which almost means rejected. IF u observe i have mention the word
\"almost\" there. Personally what i have seen is if you are selected in the first round of the interview, the employers will ask to wait us or they directly ask to proceed to the second round.
However thanx for your comments, keep sending so that i can improve my self.
