I wish all Ayyappa Swamis a happy ayyappa celebrations. Please Here I am putting some questions please give me answers. Who is Ayyappa? Who are his father and Mother? Why people will become swamis by wearing swami malas? How many days they must wear that malas? and If you can answer please answer the whole story about Ayyappa. I call upon all ayyappa swamis, all relligious persons hindu, muslim or christian etc., and Mainly the persons who know much about Ayyappa and his devotees and about shabarimala etc. Please participate in this message board and give us some detailed knowledge about this. One side muslims are celebrating ramzan by doing fast and at the same time hindus by wearing swami malas. Please give us more information

There is a good movie on Ayyappa Swami in telugu. May be u can watch the one for perfect details. I shall write what i remember. Ayya + Appa = Ayyappa. Those are the two names which he was given by his parents, who are actually from a Royal family. By wearing mala and calling others as Ayyappa or Swami u r actually seeing God in others, same with Swami Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, he used to see God in everything, ISKON/Krishna Bhakthas also call others as Prabhu similarly. y they wear a particular color? may be to represent the ascetic nature, for atleast that period u become an ascetic and leave all worldly pleasures, it will also act as a constant remainder. I have seen some people with Safron color, they also say Ayyappa. i do not know more abt these people, can anybody tell us if they know ?

I started typing the response and it got deleted. Here goes:

Ayyappa is the child of Shiva and Mohini (a female avtar of Vishnu). The mission of Ayyappa was to destroy Mahishi - a demoness who had acquired near-immortal powers through penance. She got a boon that her end should come only at the hands of a child born to Shiva & Vishnu (which she thought was impossible, since both were male gods). Having acquired this concession, she wrecked havoc, and Vishnu had to transform into a woman to achieve the near-impossible (i.e. conceive the child of Shiva).

The diet and discipline followed by the Swamis (the pilgrims who visit Sabhari Hills) is similar to what Ayyappa himself had to go thru before he fought and conquered Mahishi. I guess there\'s a subtle message that to conquer evil u need to have discipline. Since they are considered to be going through what the lord himself went through, every one of them is considered to be the lord himself. E.g. you may find elders falling at the feet of child pilgrims to pay respects (which is otherwise not permitted in Hindu culture). The diet, discipline and restrictions last for 40 days (a period known as \'mandalam\') after a swami wears the mala to denote his disciplined status.

Of course, there are feminist issues like menopausal women not being allowed to visit the temple, as they are considered to be \'impure\' and so on. The usual baggage of our culture (divide and discriminate).

(Malayalee friends, any connection between this story and \'Mohini Aattam\'?) I strongly believe that Hinduism is full of subtle messages, and by indicating that God assumed the woman form, the message that gets conveyed is that of gender equality. High time the concerned \'morons\' realized that and allowed women also to worship and visit the temple.

We had a very open culture before the \'culture police\' took over. E.g. there was an ancient practise called \'niyoga\' which is similar to the present day \'sperm donation\' - only difference, you didnt have artificial insemination in those days, so people did it the natural way :) This subject is addressed in a recent Marathi movie called \'Anahat\' produced by the famed actor of yester-years - Amol Palekar.

Hey JLU, thanx for the info. I had no clue about Ayyappa Swami\'s history. Indian mythology sure is fascinating.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you are right.

Dear Moderator, why did you have to castrate my message like this? It was in response to ABCD\'s comment and now it looks totally out of context. You may pls remove the entire message instead of snipping portions of it, like you\'ve done :)

Btw, there are some interesting pics posted in the \'Happy Ramzan\' thread, LOL :)

ABCD, nothing much - I just wanted to clarify that it was not a gay relationship as you suspected, but a straight one, since Vishnu had become a woman named Mohini before courting Shiva. Then my imagination ran wild, and I was loudly wondering if Mohini had to \'seduce\' Shiva by dancing the \'Mohini Aattam\' (that\'s when I sought the help of our Malayalee friends). I hope this straightens things out for all concerned.

Btw, Sajeeva, I\'m no expert. I just happened to know this bit of info from Hindu mythology, that\'s all.

joseph bhai...gays cannot make children...so the relationship u r asking about is quite straight...remember in the tale, vishnu turned into a beautiful girl named Mohini...
In this context i must mention that in ancient india gays were around and were not frowned upon. if anybody reads kamasutra or any ancient books related to sex, u find references to gays, with explanations on how they go about \"it\". depictions of gay and lesbian sex can also be seen among the erotic carvings of any old hindu temple.
in fact anciant india was quite open and liberal in matters like sex and alchohol and all this changed with the imposition of ancient christian morality by europeans.
the so-called hindu culture police dont realise that they are implementing a christian agenda that even many christian nations have discarded!
for the record i am straight as an arrow but i have gay friends and i feel they should not be discriminated against by our laws and society.
wtf? i no longer care if my posts hurt yr feelings
Love me or hate me, u cant ignore me :D
