Alrighti guys, lets discuss some cool movies which have novel story line and not a routine, recycled Hollywood/bollywood/tollywood story.
lets review movies like Matrix, pulp fiction etc.

To start with, some of the movies which I found different and not so routine:
1. Matrix, ofcourse
2. Pulp fiction - Its \'the\' movie!
3. Sliding Doors
4. Run Lola Run (German movie, watch out for a Hindi remake with Nandita in the lead role)
5. Train of Life [WWII movie, jews trying to escape from austria, Comedy and in Russian or hebrew language, dunno]
6. Go [english]
7. Ayithe[telugu, not to leave out Tollywood]
8. Mullholland Drive, to satiate the evil desires, engages audiences in endless thinking trying to figure out the story.
9. Last but not the Least, Palnati Brahma naidu. Starring Balayya, gret movie. No one can ever try to field more Sumos, Bikes, Trains, Planes, Steamers and Horses in one movie than this one.
[Telugu movies dont need a special mention, all movies are classic, esp. the seems flicks! no one in the world can make so many movies on the same story, with just different heroes (heroines and villans are the same) and not so different dialogues]

Please add to the list, exclude sci-fi movies.
I am sure there are many more movies which are \'cool\' and I didnt watch. so this is just an excercise to collate info on such movies. Any language movies are OK.
Post away.
1. Ameilie [french]
2. Life is Beautiful [french, WWII comedy, recycles as swayamvaram by Venu]
3. Irreversible [30 minutes rape scene, disgusting, but novel direction]
4. Momento [didnt understand a thing....]

1. Memento (probably the best in being innovative - even though my friends look at me as wierdo whenever I recommend this one - in spite of my taking pains to explain them the whole plot). Irreversible\'s concept is also same. However, those two scenes - the rape scene and the fire-extinguisher scene (the most gruesome, gutwrenching scene I have ever seen) are so totally unpalatable.
2. The Sixth Sense (No movie gave such a jolt as this one, at the end).
3. The Shawshank Redemption. Nagesh Kukunoor\'s Teen Deewarein, losely based on this, was also equally good.
4. Following (this is actually the first movie of Christopher Nolan who later on directed Memento and an insipid Insomnia)
5. Changing Lanes (a really good movie depicting how a simple 20 minutes incident or accident can bring to fore all our hidden personal traits).
6. Gattaca: One of the Best, very original sci-fi thriller. The whole movie is based on a simple truth that \"There\'s no gene for the Human Spirit\" Lost count of how many times I have seen this.
7. Fight Club - One of very few Brad Pitt movies I liked.
8. Equilibrium: the originator of fictional martial art - GunKata or gun-based martial art. It\'s a close quarters gun-based martial art emphasizing on kata, or body positioning and movement excercises.
I am sure there are some more but can\'t remember any more now.

If you want something different and novel, check out this movie called \'eXisTenZ\' (no my keyboard hasn\'t gone mad, that\'s the way it\'s actually written). It\'s never made it big commercially, especially in India, but you can get it on VCD. The storyline goes like this: it\'s the present day, but mankind has advanced in a slightly different direction. Technologically, we\'re still in the \'50s, with all mankind\'s time and effort going into developing more and more sophisticated virtual-reality video games, until anyone who plays can\'t tell whether they\'re in the real world, or in the video game. That way, it\'s a little like the Matrix, except that the characters don\'t know whether they\'re in the game or not. It came out way before the Matrix, though. To my knowledge, this is Jude Law\'s first movie...

Are we supposed to include sci-fi or not? (since Matrix is featuring as no.1 in your list). Anyway, here\'s my list (not in any particular order), both sci-fi n non-sci-fi:

1. Castaway
2. Forrest Gump
3. Jurassic Parks (1,2 & 3)
4. Total Recall
5. The Hurricane
6. Inherit the wind
7. Armageddon
8. Arizona Dream
9. Bharathi (Tamil)
10. Apocalypse now

I\'m sure there are many more which don\'t come to my mind right now.

Saagara Sangamam - is it the one where he plays the role of a dancer and opposite Jayaprada? If yes, I know that one, as it was dubbed in Tamil also. There were also other good movies by him in Telugu like Swati Muthyam, Shuba Sangalpam / Lagnam (?) and not to forget \'Maro Charithra\' :)

Reg. Al Pacino, i\'ve never seen such powerful on-screen personality in anyone else- check out the other one too(Insider) where he acted along with Russell Crowe. Maybe you would have.....

Gore Verbinski\'s \'The Ring\' is the most democratic experience I\'ve been through - its a movie about morons, made by a moron for an audience of morons.

I actually started this topic to discuss movies which introduce a radical new concept - story, direction, choreography, script which we donot find in typical movie.
Movies like Matrix, Sliding doors, Run Lola Run, Others etc etc (and yeah Palnati Brahma Naidu and \'A\' are no different from Matrix). But I myself deviated from the original topic when I added movies like Ayithe, Life is beautiful and Train of life to the list.
And I didnt expect so many relies to this topic....and everyone has a different taste, what seems ordinary (may be a good story and direction) may seem very special to others.
Anyway, why not dig deep and discuss the movies, by that I dont mean discuss entire story, just talk abt the specialities and what makes the movie different from a typical movie.
I will make the first move.

1. Matrix - I dont think I need to explain why this movie is special. Though it falls under Sci-fi category, it has much deeper philosophical content and seems so real.

2. Run Lola Run - This is excellent German movie. It shows how a woman reacts to a phone call from her boy friend. 25 minutes scene repeated 4 times. Each time she does different things.

3. Sliding Doors: What happens if Gweneth paltrow cathces the train to go home and what if she misses it. How her life changes. Makes you think what would happen if you dont visit FH.Com ;)

4. Mullholland Drive - its the Movie. Its a challenge to the audience. Try and udnerstand the movie. I watched the movie back to back three time, and discussed for another three hours with friends and came to a conclusion only to be proven wrong by the directors home page.
May the Fries be with you!

\"Donnie Darko\" by Richard Kelly - Donnie Darko is a movie that shreds sanity in the paper shredder of dark satire with malevolent glee. The visuals in the film are disturbing to say the least having a subtle yet lethal subversiveness that leaves you on the edge but never takes you over throughout. Not unlike Lynch, this movie thrives on the absence of a coherent plot and large swatches of comlpetely surreal experiences. Goth poetry of the late 70\'s/early 80\'s is used to accentuate the visual genius of this film. Richard Kelly\'s debut, IMO, is one of the greatest indie films ever made and is a sucker for repeated viewing especially if you like Lynch or Bunuel.

Hey PSD,
since you\'re into indie stuff, maybe you\'ve watched eXisTenZ. Check out my earlier post on it. That one shredded my sanity in the paper shredder man! :) Felt like a two-hour rollercoaster, complete with the faint feeling of nausea :) If you can get your hands on the VCD, check it out.
